In this study, a new analytical-numerical procedure is developed to give the stresses and strains around a circular tunnel in rock masses exhibiting different stress-strain behavior. The calculation starts from the tunnel wall and continues toward the unknown elastic-plastic boundary by a finite difference method in the annular discretized plastic zone. From the known stresses in the tunnel boundary, the strains are calculated using the elastic-plastic stiffness matrix in which three dimensional Hoek-Brown failure criterion (Jiang and Zhao 2015) and Mohr-Coulomb potential function with proper dilation angle (i.e., non-associated flow rule) are employed in terms of stress invariants. The illustrative examples give ground response curve and show correctness of the proposed approach. Finally, from the results of a great number of analyses, a simple relationship is presented to find out the closure of circular tunnel in terms of rock mass strength and tunnel depth. It can be valuable for the preliminary decision of tunnel support and for prediction of tunnel problems.
Two new elements with six degrees of freedom are proposed by applying the equilibrium conditions and strain-displacement equations. The first element is formulated for the infinite ratio of beam radius to thickness. In the second one, theory of the thick beam is used. Advantage of these elements is that by utilizing only one element, the exact solution will be obtained. Due to incorporating equilibrium conditions in the presented formulations, both proposed elements gave the precise internal forces. By solving some numerical tests, the high performance of the recommended formulations and also, interaction effects of the bending and axial forces will be demonstrated. While the second element has less error than the first one in thick regimes, the first element can be used for all regimes due to simplicity and good convergence. Based on static responses, it can be deduced that the first element is efficient for all the range of structural characteristics. The free vibration analysis will be performed using the first element. The results of static and dynamic tests show no deficiency, such as, shear and membrane locking and excessive stiff structural behavior.
A simple nonlinear programming(NLP) formulation for the optimal topology problem of structures is developed and examined. The NLP formulation is general, and can handle arbitrary objective functions and arbitrary stress, displacement constraints under multiple loading conditions. The formulation is based on simultaneous analysis and design approach to avoid stiffness matrix singularity resulting from zero sizing variables. By embedding the equilibrium equations as equality constraints in the nonlinear programming problem, we avoid constructing and factoring a system stiffness matrix, and hence avoid its singularity. The examples demonstrate that the formulation is effective for finding an optimal solution, and shown to be robust under a variety of constraints.

A critical speed analysis of a pump shaft has been investigated. Among various methods in the shaft critical speed calculation, a transfer matrix method has been examined in this research. After a brief review on the transfer matrix method, a modeling procedure for a continuous structure has been discussed. Then, a critical speed of a multistage pump shaft has been estimated up to several low modes. Throughout an analysis, parametric effects on the bearing stiffness, a degree of the modeling order, and attachmant of the impeller have been investigated. As an application example, a critical speed analysis of a verical pump which has been implemented in domestic electric power plants for cooling water circulation has been conducted in order to provide a safe operation as far as a pump vibration is concerned.

Support dynamics are often important in rotordynamic analyses. It may well happen in real situation of machines such as centrifugal pumps or turbines operating on flexible structure. This paper presents the applications of the impedance coupling method and the improved rotor model for including the support effects on the interaction with the rotor. The impedance coupling techniques are based on the FRFs of each substructure. Its dynamic stiffness matrix can be assembled to generate the system matrix, which satisfy the constraint conditions in the connection coordinates. And, the improved rotor uses the simplified spring-mass models as support properties. The equivalent support models are directly incorporated into the finite element rotor model. To verify the suggested analytical procedures, the results are compared to those of the pump system.

Flutter analysis procedure can be divided into two steps such as the computation of generalized mass, stiffness, and unsteady aerodynamic matrices and the calculation of major vibration modes frequency and damping values at each flight speed by solving the complex eigenvalue problem. In aircraft flutter analyses, most of the time is spent in the process of computing the unsteady aerodynamic matrices at each Mach-reduced frequency pairs defined. In this study, the method has been presented for computation and extraction of unsteady aerodynamic matrix portions dependent only on aerodynamic model using DMAP ALTER in MSC/NASTRAN SOL 145. In addition, efficient flutter analysis method has been suggested by computing and utilizing the unsteady generalized aerodynamic matrices for each analysis condition using the unsteady aerodynamic matrix portions extracted above.

The natural frequency of lateral vibration for ship's propulsion shafting tends to become lower as the relative stiffness of supproted system of the propulsion shafting decreases and the weight of shafting increases. Especially, the propulsion shafting of high-power ships such as car ferries, roll-on/roll-off, and container ships are susceptible to lateral vibration for their resonant speeds are happened to be in ordinary operating speed ranges. So far, many papers on the lateral vibration of ship's propulsion shaftings are published but they treated mainly special cases and not explained explicitly the calculation process. In this paper, the calculation processes of undamped and also forced damped lateral vibration by the transfer matrix method are presented and the calculation programs are developed. With the developed computer programs, a ship's propulsion shafting which was introduced on the published paper is analyzed for its lateral vibration and also the lateral vibration of the main drive shaft for a lathe is calculated to show the availiability of developed computer programs.

In this study, to analyse the dynamic characteristics of a machine-tool spindle system, the spindle is mathematically represented by a Timoshenko beam including the internal damping of beam material, and each bearing by four bearing coefficients; stiffness and damping coefficients in moment and radial directions. And the dynamic compliance of the system is calculated by introducing the transfer matrix method, and the complex modal analysis method has been applied for the modal parameter identification. The influence of the bearing coefficients, material damping factor and bearing span on the dynamic characteristics of the system is parametrically examined.
A new identification method for a nonproportional damping matrix using the finite element (FE) model updating technique is proposed. Mass and stiffness matrices of the undamped system are identified by FE model updating method. Sensitivity analysis is used to update the FE model, and zero frequencies are considered as design parameters to supplement the information of vibration characteristics. The nonproportional damping matrix is identified through the proposed method. A numerical example is considered to verify the performance of the proposed method. As a result, the damping matrix of the nonproportional system is estimated accurately.
Nowadays computers can perform symbolic computations in addition to mere number crunching operations for which they were originally designed. Symbolic computation opens up exciting possibilities in Structural Mechanics and engineering. Classical areas have been increasingly neglected due to the advent of computers as well as general purpose finite element software. But now, classical analysis has reemerged as an attractive computer option due to the capabilities of symbolic computation. The repetitive cycles of simultaneous - equation sets required by the finite element technique can be eliminated by solving a single set in symbolic form, thus generating a truly closed-form solution. This consequently saves in data preparation, storage and execution time. The power of Symbolic computation is demonstrated by six examples by applying symbolic computation 1) to solve coupled shear wall 2) to generate beam element matrices 3) to find the natural frequency of a shear frame using transfer matrix method 4) to find the stresses of a plate subjected to in-plane loading using Levy's approach 5) to draw the influence surface for deflection of an isotropic plate simply supported on all sides 6) to get dynamic equilibrium equations from Lagrange equation. This paper also presents yet another computationally efficient and accurate numerical method which is based on the concept of derivative of a function expressed as a weighted linear sum of the function values at all the mesh points. Again this method is applied to solve the problems of 1) coupled shear wall 2) lateral buckling of thin-walled beams due to moment gradient 3) buckling of a column and 4) static and buckling analysis of circular plates of uniform or non-uniform thickness. The numerical results obtained are compared with those available in existing literature in order to verify their accuracy.
