  • Writing in mathematics education is widely used in foreign countries. In this respect, it needs to consider the possibility and directions and directions for using writing in mathematics education. For this purpose, three perspectives - constructivism, socio-cultural perspective, symbolic interactionism - on communication in mathematics education have been reviewed. Then the past research on writing in general and using writing in mathematics education was summarized. Finally, directions for using writing in our mathematics class were suggested.

  • Elementary mathematics education in the 7th mathematics curricula has been emphasized to foster ‘mathematical power’. For establishing this purpose, we need to provide the opportunities inducing to students' thoughts and to study leaching-learning methods to make structuring for their thinking process. Using to writing activities in students' mathematics learning, we think that we can find out their thinking process and this writing mathematics learning method is effective to promote their communication. Through analysing to six grade mathematics textbooks, we devised to mathematical writing types and teaching/learning models could being utilized in mathematics classes. And we investigated the influence of mathematical writing on the learning ability of students. We have experimented and investigated to after dividing experimental objects into two groups, experimental group and comparative group. We founded out, through these researches for mathematical writing teaming, that the experimental group of the former had obtained greatly better results than the latter in mathematical learning abilities and studying achievements. Based on these result, it is required to have an accumulation of research on teaching-teaming methods by using various types of mathematical writing study.

  • For a long time, mathematics education institutions such as NCTM(National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) have emphasized the essential role of writing, and recent surveys by the Ministry of Education report a decline in foundational academic skills in the post-COVID19 period. The purpose of this study is to redefine the significance of mathematics writing in mathematics education, focusing on competencies highlighted in the field, particularly in the areas of problem-solving, communication, and reasoning. The research findings indicate that writing in problem-solving enhances cognitive organization, fostering the ability to grasp concepts and methods. Writing in communication builds confidence through the meta-cognitive process, and writing in inference allows self-awareness of step-by-step identification of areas lacking understanding. Particularly in the future society where artificial intelligence(AI) is utilized, changes in the learning environment necessitate research for the establishment of authenticity judgment through writing and the cultivation of a proper writing culture.

  • This study examines the effects of reflective journal writing on the mathematics self-efficacy in reciprocal peer tutoring. Participants were 38 high school students in Gyeonggi province who attended at a summer intensive mathematics course for 4 weeks. This study used a mixed method. SPSS 21.0 program was used to analyze the quantitative data, and the interviews, observational journals and reflective journals of 6 students were used to analyze qualitative data. According to the results, all the subcategories of mathematics self-efficacy, - mathematics problem-efficacy, mathematics success-efficacy, mathematics learning-efficacy, and mathematics subject-efficacy - improved except mathematics occupation-efficacy. In case of mathematics success-efficacy and mathematics problem-efficacy, students revealed the greatest improvement. In conclusion, reflective journal writing in reciprocal peer tutoring could be suggested as a treatment program to improve students' mathematics self-efficacy.

  • I took a look at the note written by the students in math class. But, it was sort of a 'scratch paper' because they focused only on the problems or do not know the writing a notebook. Thus, I prepared organizational writing activity through learning-notebooks and analyzed the results from the writing activity through learning-notebooks in order to recognize the effects how the activity influences students' mathematics academic achievements and attitude. As a result, I could find that writing activity through learning-notebooks contributes to the enhancement of mathematics academic achievement and attitude.

  • In this study, pre-service teachers who would be mathematics teachers of secondary school wrote the journal about learning mathematics. Journal writing helped pre-service teachers' math learning. Pre-service teachers could think mathematics reflectively, inquire it, represent their affectivity, plan the self-directed learning, and have the records of learning. They considered the educational issues as instructional methods, organization and management of instruction, assessment, and attitude of teacher. As well, they thought that journal writing was important in learning mathematics and how they would apply their students. Journal writing was meaningful to pre-service teacher education in cognitive and situative aspects.

  • In this paper, we study the effect of writing activity as mathematical communication on the students's mathematics achievement, learning attitude, and mathematical tendency. For this purpose, we construct a experimental class and then analyze the students' change in those aspects after applying three-divided-note writing activity and colleague feedback on their works those students are in the experimental class. As a result of the experiment, we find that three-divided-note writing activity and colleague feedback made some significant changes on the students achievement in mathematics, learning attitude, but does not affect on mathematical tendency. We also offer some suggestions for further research. Firstly, the mathematical communication ability must be stressed in mathematics education. For this purpose, we need to develop the teaching and the evaluation method to use not only writing but also reading, speaking, and listening skills so that many teachers can apply this method easily to their classes. Second, we need to fix some realistic problems such as fair evaluation , the numbers of students per class, the numbers of lesson, and too much extra-work, and so on. Thirdly, we suggest to explore some methods for extending three- divided-note writing activity to evaluate mathematical essay and to study educational effects of colleague feedback on mathematics performance assessment.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of communication - oriented mathematical writing strategies on students' mathematics achievement and mathematical propensity. In order to achieve the purpose, three types of communicative math writing learning strategies such as writing their own thoughts and feelings, writing problem solving process, and explaining the mathematical concepts. In the comparative group, general lessons based on textbooks and tutorials were conducted. As the results, the students in the experimental group showed a significant improvement in mathematics achievement and a positive effect on the mathematical propensity as compared with the comparison group.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of using process-based writing poems in the elementary mathematics classrooms. For this study, we chose 128 elementary school students to examine their mathematical achievements and attitude towards mathematics when using process-centered writing poems in the elementary mathematics classrooms. Process-based mathematics and writing programs developed mainly on the geometry units were composed of four levels, idea generation, idea selection, use and idea organization grouped into similar sections in order to separate into two sections. The results of the practice of this study's problem can be summarized as follows. First, the process-based mathematics and writing activity of geometry had a positive impact on academic achievement in mathematics. Although there was not a significant difference in the fourth and fifth grades, significant differences in the fifth and sixth grade were found. Second, in regards to attitudes in mathematics, process-based mathematics and writing activities had a positive impact. In particular, the improvement of mathematical attitudes was evident in all grades. It confirmed the effective facilitation of interest and enjoyment towards learning mathematics by 4th, 5th and 6th graders who had undertaken these mathematics classes.
