  • Recently experimental class model is growingly recommended for mathematics instruction. Freudenthal(1973) points out the difficulties of learning probability and Fischebien suggested to teach probability more intuitively through games. However detailed explanations for such classes are not easy to find. This paper is to give more detailed materials for those lessons and to check its effectiveness. We give 6 topics of probability and statistics being taught in our middle school, such as histogram, concept of probability, probability calculations, expectations, standard deviations, and correlations and each of which is given along with the experimental materials to be used. We perform a trial of the methods and found some encouragement in the students' mathematical attitudes and interests but not in the achievements. We belive that the drawback of the achievement result is due to the short length of time of our experiments.

  • This study aims to examine the effects of process-based integrated Mathematics Science Activities on children's science process skills and scientific attitudes and arrange efficient teaching and learning environment in the field. The subjects of research were 89 three-year and five-year old children attending kindergarten attached to W university in I city, Jeollabuk-do and process-based integrated Mathematics Science activities were conducted with themes. For data analysis, paired t-test was conducted with SPSS for Windows program and as a result of performing process-based integrated Mathematics Science activities, it was found that there were significant differences in sub-factors of science process skills and scientific attitude by age and sex. These results suggested that process-based integrated activities had positive influences on three-year and five-yeard old children.

  • This study intends to examine the characteristics of mathematical literacy on Korean Students in PISA 2003(Programme for International Student Assessment 2003). We study the mean performance, the distribution of student performance, the student performance in terms of mathematics contents and process and situation and item format, the differences in mean scores between PISA 2000 and PISA 2003, and the gender differences in student performance. In addition to, we study students' engagement with mathematics, students' beliefs about themselves, students' anxiety in mathematics, and students' teaming strategies. Finally, we discuss the reasons of the characteristics of mathematical literacy on Korean students in PISA 2003, and suggest the implications for mathematics educators and educational policy-makers.

  • Recognizing the importance of motivation, goal orientation, and attitudes toward schools is an important component for educators to consider as they establish positive learning communities for gifted learners. The purpose of this study was to describe attitudes toward school and self relationship to schoolwork for students who are enrolled in the 5th, 6th, and 7th grade, identified as gifted, accelerated in at least one subject (mathematics), and living in Korea or the United States. Comparisons were conducted for country of origin and gender for all subscales on the School Attitude Assessment Survey-Revised (McCoach & Siegle, 2004). Of the 507 participants (278 Korean and 229 American), girls scored higher on the motivation/self-regulation scale than boys and American students scored higher than Korean students on attitudes toward school, academic self perceptions, goal orientation, and motivation. There were no differences by country or gender on attitudes toward teachers.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze changes in gender differences of Korean students in PISA mathematics assessment and investigate possible factors influencing the decrease of gender gap in mathematics performances. According to the results of PISA mathematics assessment, Korea showed significant large gender differences in mathematics achievement in both 2000 and 2003. The gender gap in favor of boys, however, has decreased since 2006. An interesting point from these results is that Korean girls' significant improvement led to the decrease in gender difference in 2006 and 2009 assessment. Based on a review of literature on gender differences in mathematics, possible explanations for the girls' improvement in mathematics achievements are identified as follows: the Korean government policy to encourage and support girls' study in mathematics and science and supportive environments could influence positively girls' attitudes toward mathematics and their mathematics learning; the changes in the mathematics curriculum and textbooks which emphasize similar characteristics to PISA mathematics assessment could affect the girls' improvement by reducing their unfamiliarity with PISA mathematics assessment items.

  • This study is to figure out the activity and disposition of gifted students with face plot in exploratory data analysis at middle school mathematics class. This study has begun on the basis of the doing mathematics at multivariate analysis beyond one variable and two variables. Gifted students were developed the good learning habits theirselves. According to this result, Many gifted students have an interesting experience at data analysis with Face Plot. And they felt the useful methods of creative thinking about graphics with doing mathematics at mathematical tasks. I think that teachers need to learn the visualization methods and to make and to develop the STEAM education tasks connected real life. It should be effective enough to change their attitudes toward teaching and learning at exploratory data analysis.

  • This study developed teaching and learning materials for an integrated education program of probability and genetics in the light of connections between mathematics and biological science. It also analysed characteristics of high school students' mathematical activities which appeared while the students took part in lessons where the developed materials were contributed in order to teach them. To achieve the aim, this study firstly specified five details for the development of the materials based on the results of previous research and extracted contents of probability and genetics which had the possibility of being taught in the integrated education program by examining the text books. After embodying the teaching materials according to the five details and the extracted contents, the researchers implemented 10 lessons by using the materials. This study elaborated some implications for a succeeding integrated education of mathematics and biological science in term of anlaysis results of features from the students' mathematical understanding and attitudes emerging in the lessons.

  • This study investigated various effects of WBD(web-based discussion) on mathematical communication, interaction and problem solving in the classroom. We developed a web site including BBS and chat room in order to encourage students' mathematical curiosities and self-studies. The web site had been operated for 6 months. Five classes of 1st grade students were selected from an middle school in Daejon. Moreover, we analyzed several cases for interactional behavior and effect. WBD promote dialogue between a teacher and students. Analysis of feed-back from BBS revealed that student's negative attitudes could be changed to positive ones by step-by-step discussions. Moreover, collaborative learning is enhanced by on-line discussion. But the effects of WBD are affected by the character and ability of a student.

  • The study analyzed effects of the problem-based learning utilizing cognitive algorithms in elementary mathematics education in terms of academic achievement and math attitude changes. In order to solve the research questions, a cognitive algorithm-based PBL model was derived based on N. Landa's algorithm-based instructional design theory. And the model was applied to a part of second semester math curriculum for 4th grade of an elementary school located in Seoul. The results showed that the PBL utilizing algorithms can be said to have effects on academic achievement. The PBL model is also considered to have positive effects in enhancing mathematical attitudes of the learners.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the influences of the reciprocal writing-reflection activities on the mathematical learning of the 2nd grade students by developing a class model using reciprocal writing-reflection activities method as one of the interactive application of manipulative activities, reflective thought and communication activities which are the learning principles of constructivism. We have experimented and investigated to after dividing experimental objects into two group, experimental groups and comparative group, The conclusions of this study are followings. First, reciprocal writing-reflection activities showed significant effects on mathematical achievements of the group with lower achievements in learning. Second, reciprocal writing-reflection activities positively influenced mathematical tendency of the students. Third, the students had positive attitudes in interest, desire and usefulness regarding reciprocal writing-reflection activities. And reciprocal writing- reflection activities are helpful for their reflective thinking and communication activities.
