Recently, the use of mobile devices has increased, and mobile traffic is growing rapidly. In order to deal with such massive traffic, cognitive radio (CR) is applied to efficiently use limited-spectrum resources. However, there can be multiple communication systems trying to access the white space (unused spectrum), and inevitable interference may occur to cause mutual performance degradation. Therefore, understanding the effects of interference in CR-based systems is crucial to meaningful operations of these systems. In this paper, we consider a long-term evolution (LTE) system using additional spectra by accessing the TV white space, where low-power devices (LPDs) are licensed primary users, in addition to TV broadcasting service providers. We model such a heterogeneous system to analyze the co-existence problem and evaluate the interference effects of LPDs on LTE user equipment (UE) throughput. We then present methods to mitigate the interference effects of LPDs by 'de-selecting' some of the UEs to effectively increase the overall sector throughput of the CR-based LTE system.
Massive hemoptysis is a life-threatening condition and sometimes leads to death due to airway obstruction rather than exsanguinations. In a critical hemoptysis, endotracheal intubation may be necessary to maintain adequate gas exchange and protect the unaffected side of the lung. Bronchial blockers (BBs), commonly used technique for one-lung ventilation in thoracic or cardiac surgeries, are valuable devices for protecting the airway in massive endobronchial bleeding. We report three cases intubated with BBs, Univent$^{(R)}$, in massive hemoptysis. We suggest that BBs are one of the indispensable equipments for respiratory specialized wards and intensive care units.
Due to recent development in mobile devices, the mobile device utilization and many related applications have been increasing. Most of initial applications on mobile devices just showed simple information, but now they processes huge data. However, smart devices have certain limitations in processing massive data. Especially, if the size of data increases, the speed of data processing adversely decreases, so the performance of programs also decreases. If hardware specification of the mobile devices is not enough to handle it, response time will be drastically delayed. To overcome these drawbacks, most of application running on mobile devices communicate with their servers to manage data. XML is a proper language for data communication to send and receive data between servers and mobile devices, because it defines rules of document's format and it is a textual data format and small-sized language. However, mobile devices have limitation such as memory, CPU and wireless network to process huge data and XML also takes a lot of time to communicate with servers and devices and handle data, so it could be overhead in service time. Binary XML is an alternative of performance improvement in data processing, which has XML's benefits and minimizes the XML size by binary coding. However, most of binaryXML which are used on applications don't fit on mobile applications. In this paper, we surveyed many kinds of binaryXML, compared merits and demerits to find a binaryXML for mobile applications. We propose how to use binary XML and implemented an electronic attendance system using binary XML to overcome the limitation of XML and to reduce the load of data communications between servers and devices.
Although physical modeling synthesis is becoming more and more efficient in rich and natural high-quality sound synthesis, its high computational complexity limits its use in portable devices. This constraint motivated research of single-instruction multiple-data many-core architectures that support the tremendous amount of computations by exploiting massive parallelism inherent in physical modeling synthesis. Since no general consensus has been reached which grain sizes of many-core processors and memories provide the most efficient operation for sound synthesis, design space exploration is conducted for seven processing element (PE) configurations. To find an optimal PE configuration, each PE configuration is evaluated in terms of execution time, area and energy efficiencies. Experimental results show that all PE configurations are satisfied with the system requirements to be implemented in portable devices.
This paper reviews the potentials of a rotary chemical vapor deposition (RCVD) process for nanomaterial synthesis and coating on powder-based materials. The rotary reactor offers a significant improvement over traditional CVD methods having horizontal and fixed reaction chambers. The RCVD system yields enhanced productivity and surface coating uniformity of nanoparticles applied in various purposes, such as efficient heat dissipation, surface hardness enhancement, and enhanced energy storage performances. The effectiveness of the RCVD system would open up new possibilities in various applications because uniform coating on powder-based materials with massive productivity is inevitable to develop multi-functional materials with high reliability.
Recently, the Social Internet of Things (IoT), the follow-up of the IoT, has been studied to expand the existing IoT services, by integrating devices into the social network of people. In the Social IoT environment, humans, devices and digital contents are connected with social relationships, to guarantee the network navigability and establish levels of trustworthiness. However, this environment handles massive data, including social data of humans (e.g., profile, interest and relationship), profiles of IoT devices, and digital contents. Hence, users and service providers in the Social IoT are exposed to arbitrary data when searching for specific information. A study about the recommender system for the Social IoT environment is therefore needed, to provide the required information only. In this paper, we propose the Social correlation group based Recommender System (SRS). The SRS generates a target group, depending on the social correlation of the service requirement. To generate the target group, we have designed an architecture, and proposed a procedure of the SRS based on features of social interest similarity and principles of the Collaborative Filtering and the Content-based Recommender System. With simulation results of the target scenario, we present the possibility of the SRS to be adapted to various Social IoT services.
