Transformation of austenite to martensite during cold rolling has been widely used to strengthen metastable austenitic stainless steel grades. Aging treatment of cold worked metastable austenitic stainless steels, including ${\alpha}'$-martensite phase, results in the further increase of strength, when aging is performed in $200^{\circ}C$ to $450^{\circ}C$ temperature range. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effect of time and temperature on the stress-strain behavior of cold worked austenitic stainless steels. The amount of ${\alpha}'$-martensite during cold working and aging was examined by ferrite scope and X-ray diffraction (XRD). During aging at $450^{\circ}C$ for 1hr, tensile strength dramatically increased by 150MPa. Deformed metastable austenitic steels containing the "body-centered" ${\alpha}'$-martensite are strengthened by the diffusion of interstitial solute atoms during aging at low temperature.
Purpose: There is an ongoing search for a stent material that produces a reduced susceptibility artifact. This study evaluated the effect of manganese (Mn) content on the MRI susceptibility artifact of ferrous-manganese (Fe-Mn) alloys, and investigated the correlation between MRI findings and measurements of Fe-Mn microstructure on X-ray diffraction (XRD). Materials and Methods: Fe-Mn binary alloys were prepared with Mn contents varying from 10% to 35% by weight (i.e., 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, 30%, and 35%; designated as Fe-10Mn, Fe-15Mn, Fe-20Mn, Fe-25Mn, Fe-30Mn, and Fe-35Mn, respectively), and their microstructure was evaluated using XRD. Three-dimensional spoiled gradient echo sequences of cylindrical specimens were obtained in parallel and perpendicular to the static magnetic field (B0). In addition, T1-weighted spin echo, T2-weighted fast spin echo, and $T2^*$weighted gradient echo images were obtained. The size of the low-intensity area on MRI was measured for each of the Fe-Mn binary alloys prepared. Results: Three phases of ${\alpha}^{\prime}$-martensite, ${\gamma}$-austenite, and ${\varepsilon}$-martensite were seen on XRD, and their composition changed from ${\alpha}^{\prime}$-martensite to ${\gamma}$-austenite and/or ${\varepsilon}$-martensite, with increasing Mn content. The Fe-10Mn and Fe-15Mn specimens comprised ${\alpha}^{\prime}$-martensite, the Fe-20Mn and Fe-25Mn specimens comprised ${\gamma}+{\varepsilon}$ phases, and the Fe-30Mn and Fe-35Mn specimens exhibited a single ${\gamma}$ phase. The size of the low-intensity areas of Fe-Mn on MRI decreased relative to its microstructure on XRD with increasing Mn content. Conclusion: Based on these findings, proper conditioning of the Mn content in Fe-Mn alloys will improve its visibility on MR angiography, and a Mn content of more than 25% is recommended to reduce the magnetic susceptibility artifacts on MRI. A reduced artifact of Fe-Mn alloys on MRI is closely related to the paramagnetic constitution of ${\gamma}$-austenite and/or ${\varepsilon}$-martensite.
Martensitic stainless steel STS 431 has been nitrided by active screen ion nitriding under the various temperature and time. The thickness of diffusion layer, case depth, hardness and composition phases were investigated using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), micro-Vickers hardness tester, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and glow discharge spectroscopy (GDS). It was observed that the thickness of diffusion layer depends strongly on the treatment temperature and time. A sample, which was nitrided at $450^{\circ}C$ for 8hours, was a maximum hardness of Hv0.01 1558 and nitride layer of $70{\mu}m$. As shown in XRD patterns, $\varepsilon(Fe_{2-3}N)$ and expanded martensite (${\alpha}_N$) phases which was saturated with nitrogen solid solution were in the nitrided layer treated at $450^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. Composition phases of $\varepsilon$$(Fe_{2-3}N)$ and ${\gamma}'$ ($Fe_4N$) were observed after active screen nitriding at $450^{\circ}C$ for 8 hours.
A set of $Fe_{1-x}Ni_{x}$ (x=0.10, 0.25, 0.30, 0.35, 0.50, 0.60, 0.75, 0.85) fine particles prepared by the gas evaporation technique was studied by $M\"{o}ssbauer$, XRD and other techniques. The XRD and $M\"{o}ssbauer$ patterns of the sample with x=0.10 ($Fe_{90}Ni_{10}$) were found to be exceptionally different, showing an austenite phase stability when the particles are quenched. This phase stability is quite different from that of the corresponding bulk alloy. Using binomial distrbution fits of the $M\"{o}ssbauer$ spectra of the particles in terms of nearest and next nearest neighbour configurations around the Fe atoms, an analysis of this phase stability is given. The changes in the relative intensities of the resulting magnetic sextets are used to determine the increase in martensite following the austenite-martensite transformation process. The stable austenite can, therefore, be determined. This stability may be related to the oxide surface layer and the small number of atoms of these fine particles.
The microstructure and deformation behavior in 22Cr-0.2N micro-duplex stainless steels with various Ni and Mn contents were compared using by OM, TEM, and XRD. The 22Cr-0.2N duplex stainless steel plates were fabricated and hot rolled, followed by annealing treatment at the temperature range of $1,000-1,100^{\circ}C$. All the samples showed the common strain hardening behaviour during the tensile test at a room temperature. The steels tested at the temperatures of $-30^{\circ}C$ or $-50^{\circ}C$ showed a distinct inflection point in the stress-strain curves, which should be resulted from the formation of strain-induced martensite(SIM) of austenite phase. This was confirmed by TEM observations. The onset strain of a inflection point in a stress-strain curve should be depended up the value of $M_d30$. With the decrease of the tensile test temperature, the inflection point appeared earlier, and the strength and fracture strain were higher. The tensile behaviour was discussed from the point of austenite stability of the micro-duplex stainless steels with the different Ni and Mn content.
The flame quenching process has been employed to modify the surfaces of commercial marine propeller material, aluminum bronze alloy (Cu-8.8Al-5Ni-5Fe), and the microstructure, hardness and wear properties of the flame-quenched layers have been studied. The thermal history was accurately monitored during the process with respect to both the designed maximum surface temperature and holding time. The XRD and EDX analyses have shown that at temperatures above $T_{\beta}$, the microstructure consisting of ${\alpha}+{\kappa}$ phases changed into the ${\alpha}+{\beta}^{\prime}$ martensite due to an eutectoid reaction of ${\alpha}+{\kappa}{\rightarrow}{\beta}$ and a martensitic transformation of ${\beta}{\rightarrow}{\beta}^{\prime}$. The ${\beta}^{\prime}$ martensite phase formed showed a face-centered cubic (FCC) crystal structure with the typical twinned structure. The hardness of the flame-quenched layer having the ${\alpha}+{\beta}^{\prime}$ structure was similar to that of the ${\alpha}+{\kappa}$ structure and depended sensitively on the size and distribution of hard ${\kappa}$ and ${\beta}^{\prime}$ phases with depth from the surface. As a result of the sliding wear test, the wear resistance of the flame-quenched layer was markedly enhanced with the formation of the ${\beta}^{\prime}$ martensite.
NiAl alloy powders were prepared by mechanical alloying method and bulk specimens were produced using hot isostatic pressing techniques. This study focused on the transformation behavior and properties of Ni-Al mechanically alloyed powders and bulk alloys. Transformation behavior was investigated by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), XRD and TEM. Particle size distribution and microstructures of mechanically alloyed powders were studied by particle size analyzer and scanning electron microscope (SEM). After 10 hours milling, XRB peak broadening appeared at the alloyed powders with compositions of Ni-36at%Al to 40at%Al. The NiAl and $Ni_3Al$ intermetallic compounds were formed after water quenching of solution treated powders and bulk samples at $1200^{\circ}C$, but the martensite phase was observed after liquid nitrogen quenching of solution treated powders. However, the formation of $Ni_3Al$ intermetallic compounds were not restricted by fast quenching into liquid nitrogen. It is considered to be caused by fast diffusion of atoms for the formation of stable $\beta$(NiAl) phase and $Ni_3Al$ due to nano sized grains during quenching. Amounts of martensite phase increased as the composition of aluminium component decreased in the Ni-Al alloy, which resulted in the increasing damping properties.
The spot weldability of dissimilar metal joints between stainless steels (AISI316) and interstitial free (IF) steels were investigated. This study was aimed to determine the spot welding parameters for a dissimilar metal joint and to evaluate the dissimilar metal joint's weldability, including its welding nugget shape, tensileshear strength, hardness, and microstructure. The fracture surface was investigated by using a Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The experimental results showed that the shape of nugget was asymmetric, in which the fusion zone of the STS316 sheet was larger due to the higher bulk-resistance. The microstructure of the fusion zone was fully martensite. In order to evaluate the microstructure further, dilution of stainless steels were calculated and imposed onto the Schaeffler diagram. The predicted microstructure from the Schaeffler diagram was martensite. In order to confirm the predicted microstructure, XRD measurements were carried out. The results showed that that initial weld nugget was composed of austenite and martensite.
The aim of this study was to investigate effects of hafnium content on the corrosion behavior of Ti alloys in electrolyte containing chloride ion. For this study, Ti-Hf binary alloys contained 10 wt%, 20 wt% and 30 wt% Hf were manufactured in a vacuum arc-melting furnace and subjected to heat treatment for 12h at $1000^{\circ}C$ in an argon atmosphere. The pitting corrosion behavior of the specimens was examined through potentiodynamic and potentiostatic tests in 0.9 wt% NaCl electrolyte at $36.5{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. The corrosion morphology of Ti-xHf alloys was investigated using optical microscopy (OM) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD). From the optical microstructures and XRD results, needle-like martensite ($\alpha$') phases of the Ti-xHf alloys increased with an increase of Hf addition. Corrosion current density $(I_{corr})$ and current density $(I_{300mV})$ in passive region decreased, whereas, corrosion potential increased with Hf content. At the constant potential ($300mV_{SCE}$), current density decreased as time increased.
