  • The influence of various surface morphologies on the mechanical strength of silicon substrates was investigated in this study. The yield for the solar cell industry is mainly related to the fracturing of silicon wafers during the manufacturing process. The flexural strengths of silicon substrates were influenced by the density of the pyramids as well as by the size and the rounded surface of the pyramids. To characterize and optimize the relevant texturing process in terms of mechanical stability and the fabrication yield, the mechanical properties of textured silicon substrates were investigated to optimize the size and morphology of random pyramids. Several types of silicon substrates were studied, including the planar type, a textured surface with large and small pyramids, and a textured surface with rounded pyramids. The surface morphology and a cross-section of the as-textured and fractured silicon substrates were investigated by scanning electron microscopy.

  • Objectives Seunggal-tang is one of the prescriptions of oriental herbal medicine, which has been applied to several allergic diseases such as atopic dermatitis. This study was planned to compare differences of anti-allergic effects based on different form of Seunggal-tang by manufacturing differently. Methods Two types herb medicine products were used; aqueous extract (SG-T, Seunggal-Tang) and powder (SG-S, Seunggal-San) which were made from the same mixed formula of Seunggal-tang. To investigate in vitro anti-allergic activities, rat basophilic leukemia (RBL-2H3) cells were treated with SG-T and SG-S for 1 hour, and then stimulated with the phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) plus calcium ionophore A23187. We examined the release of beta-hexosaminidase, as a marker of degranulation, and the releases of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha and interleukin (IL)-4, as proinflammatory cytokines. Results SG-T and SG-S didn't have effects on cell viabilities in concentrations under 2㎎/㎖. In additionto that, SG-T more inhibited releasing ${\beta}$-hexosaminidase, TNF-${\alpha}$ and IL-4 than SG-S. Conclusions These results indicate that SG-T is more effective against mast cell-mediated allergic reactions than SG-S.

  • To overcome the limitations of the conventional Ni anode-supported SOFCs, various types of ceramic anodes have been studied. However, these ceramic anodes are difficult to commercialize because of their low cell performances and difficulty in manufacturing anode-support typed SOFCs. Therefore, in this study, to use these ceramic anodes and take advantage of anode-supported SOFC, which can minimize ohmic loss from the thin electrolyte, we fabricated cathode support-typed SOFC. The cathode-support of LSCF-YSZ was prepared by the acid treatment of conventional Ni-YSZ (Yttria-stabilized Zirconia) anode-support, followed by the infiltration of LSCF to YSZ scaffold. The composite of $La(Sr)Ti(Ni)O_3$ and $Ce(Mn,Fe)O_2$ was used as the ceramic anode. The fabricated cathode-supported button cell showed a relatively low power density of $0.207Wcm^{-2}$ at $850^{\circ}C$; however, it is expected to show better performance through the optimization of the infiltration rate and thickness of LSCF-YSZ cathode-support layer.

  • Although CNTFETs have attracted great attention due to their ability to increase semiconductor device performance by about 13 times, the commercialization of CNTFETs has been challenging because of the immature deposition process of CNTs. To overcome these difficulties, circuit design method considering the known limitations of the CNTFET manufacturing process is receiving increasing attention. SRAM is a major element constituting microprocessor and is regularly and repeatedly positioned in the cache memory; so, it has the advantage that CNTs can be more easily and densely deposited in SRAM than other circuit blocks. In order to take these advantages, this paper presents a circuit design method for SRAM cells considering CNT density and then evaluates its performance improvement using HSPICE simulation. As a result of simulation, it is found that when CNTFET is applied to SRAM, the gate width can be reduced by about 1.7 times and the read speed also can be improved by about 2 times when the CNT density was increased in the same gate width.

  • We developed a processing recipe to synthesize flexible polyurethane foam with a pore size of 335 ± 107 ㎛. The gelling reaction time was varied from 0 to 30 minutes and the physical properties of the foam were evaluated. The gelling reaction where the polypropylene glycol and tolylene 2,4-diisocyanate (TDI) were reacted to form urethane prepolymer, proceeded until a chemical blowing agent, deionized water, was introduced. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra showed that the composition of the foam did not change but the foam height reached a peak value when the gelling reaction time was 10 minutes. We found that increasing the gelling time lessened the coalescence and helped the formation of cells. Lastly, the repeatability of polyurethane foam was confirmed by one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) by synthesizing ten identical polyurethane foams under the same experimental conditions, including the gelling reaction time. Overall, the new time parameter in-between the gelling and blowing reactions will give extra stability in manufacturing identical polyurethane foams and can be applied to various polyurethane foam processes.

  • Microencapsulation is a protective process for materials that are sensitive to harsh conditions encounted during food manufacture and storage. The objectives of this research were to manufacture a milk protein-based delivery system (MPDS) containing Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) using skim milk powder and to investigate the effects of manufacturing variables, such as reaction temerpature and holding time, on the physiccohemical properties of MPDS and viability of LGG under dairy food processing and storage conditions. MPDS was prepared using chymosin at varing reaction temperatures from 25℃ to 40℃ for 10 min and holding times from 5 to 30 min at 25℃. The morphological and physicochemical properties of MPDS were evaluated using a confocal laser scanning microscope and a particle size analyzer, respectively. The number of viable cells were determined using the standard plate method. Spherical-shaped MPDS particles were successfully manufactured. The particle size of MPDS was increased with a decrease in reaction temperature and an increase in holding time. As reaction temperature and holding time were increased, the encapsulation efficiency of LGG in MPDS was increased. During pasteurization, the use of MPDS resulted in an increase in the LGG viability. The encapsulation of LGG in MPDS led to an increase in the viability of LGG in simulated gastric fluid. In addition, the LGG viability was enhanced with an increase in reaction temperature and holding time. In conclusions, the encapsulation of LGG in MPDS could be an effective way of improving the viability of LGG during pasturization process in various foods.

  • Although printing technology has recently been widely used in IT fields including displays and fuel cells, residual and thermal stress are generated by a manufacturing process of stacking the layers of the print head and result in the substrate deformation and nozzle plate crack, which may cause ink leaks or not be ejected onto a desired region. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a new design of thermal inkjet print head with a robust and reliable structure. Diverse types of inkjet print head such as a rib, pillar, support wall and individual feed hole are designed to reduce the deformation of the substrate and nozzle plate, and their feasibility is numerically investigated through FEA analysis. The numerical results show that the maximum stress and deformation of proposed print head dramatically drops to at least 40~50%, and it is confirmed that there is no nozzle plate cracks and ink leakage through the fabrication of pillar and support wall typed print head. Therefore, it is expected that the proposed head shape can be applied not only to ink ejection in the normal direction, but also to large-area printing technology.

  • Hydrocarbon-based polymer membranes to replace perfluorinated polymer membranes are being continuously researched. However, hydrocarbon-based membranes have a problem in that they are less durable than fluorine-based membranes. In this study, we sought to compare the annealing effect to improve the durability of sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK). After membranes formation, thermogravimetric analysis and tensile strength were measured to compare changes in membranes properties due to annealing. After manufacturing the membrane and electrode assembly (MEA), the initial performance and chemical durability was compared with unit cell operation. During the 24-hour annealing process, the strength increased due to the increase in-S-O-S-crosslinking, and the sulfonic acid group decreased, leading to a decrease in I-V performance. By annealing, the hydrogen permeability was reduced to less than 1/10 of that of the nafion membrane, and as a result, open circuit voltage (OCV) and durability was improved. The SPEEK membranes annealed for 24 hours showed higher durability than the nafion 211 membranes of the same thickness.

  • The projected growth of global meat production over the next decade is attributed to rising income levels and population expansion. One potentially more pragmatic approach to mitigating the adverse externalities associated with meat production involves implementing alterations to the production process, such as transitioning to cultured meat, hybrid cultured meat, and meat alternatives. Cultured meat (CM) is derived from animal stem cells and undergoes a growth and division process that closely resembles the natural in vivo cellular development. CM is emerging as a widely embraced substitute for traditional protein sources, with the potential to alleviate the future strain on animalderived meat production. To date, the primary emphasis of cultured meat research and production has predominantly been around the ecological advantages and ethical considerations pertaining to animal welfare. However, there exists substantial study potential in exploring consumer preferences with respect to the texture, color, cuts, and sustainable methodologies associated with cultured meat. The potential augmentation of cultured meat's acceptance could be facilitated through the advancement of a wider range of cuts to mimic real muscle fibers. This review examines the prospective commercial trends of hybrid cultured meat. Subsequently, the present state of research pertaining to the advancement of scaffolding, coloration, and muscle fiber development in hybrid cultured meat, encompassing plant-based alternatives designed to emulate authentic meat, has been deliberated. However, this discussion highlights the obstacles that have arisen in current procedures and proposes future research directions for the development of sustainable cultured meat and meat alternatives, such as plant-based meat production.
