Current situation and future prospects for beef production in South Korea - A review

  • Hanwoo cattle are an important food source in Korea and their supply can have a major impact on meat availability for Korean consumers. The Hanwoo population was 1.8 million head in 2005 and gradually increased to 2.6 million in 2015. Per capita beef consumption has also increased, to 11.6 kg per year in 2015, and is expected to continue to increase. Because intramuscular fat percentage is a critical contributor to meat quality, Hanwoo cattle are fed a high-energy corn-based diet for long fattening periods. Long fed diet causes significant alterations in fat percentage in the loin muscle and other areas of the carcass. However, these long feeding periods increase feeding costs and beef prices. Recently, there has been increased Korean consumer demand for lean beef which has less fat, but is tender and priced more reasonably. These consumer demands on the Korean beef industry are driving differing beef production systems and also changes to the beef grading methodology. Korean government has made a significant investment to select bulls with favorable production traits using progeny testing. Progeny tested bull semen has been disseminated to all Hanwoo farmers. A beef traceability system has been employed for all cattle breeds in Korea since 2009. Hanwoo cattle are ear-marked with a 12-digit identification number from birth to slaughter. This number allows traceability of the management history of individual cattle, and also provides information to consumers. Traceability including management information such as herd, farm, year of birth, and carcass data can determine estimated breeding values of Hanwoo. For a sustainable Hanwoo industry, research scientists in Korea have attempted to develop feeds for efficient fattening periods and precision feeding systems based on genetic information for Hanwoo cattle. These initiatives aim to Korean consumer demands for beef and provide more precision management in beef production in Korea.

연중 하천유량 관리를 위한 기간 구분 및 관리범위 설정 방안 (The method of period division and range setting for annual river discharge management)

  • 현재까지는 연중 하천유량의 관리기간은 홍수기와 비홍수기로 구분하고, 관리해야 할 유량의 범위는 갈수량에서 홍수량까지로 폭넓게 규정하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 4대강 8개 지점의 장기간 일평균유량 자료를 이용하여1년을 유량의 분산과 평균이 동질한 기간들로 구분하고, 기간별 유량의 평균과 표준편차를 이용하여 유량의 관리범위를 설정하는 방안을 제시한다. 연구결과, 연중 관리기간은 지점에 따라 차이는 있으나 홍수기 이전, 홍수기, 홍수기 이후로 구분할 수 있었으며, 기간을 세분화하면 최소유량에 대한 최대유량의 비도 낮아지는 것을 알 수 있었다. 또한, 연중 일평균유량이 갈수량 이상 홍수량 이하가 되도록 기간별 일평균유량의 관리범위를 기간별 일평균유량의 평균 ±표준편차로 설정하는 방안도 제시하였다.

크라상생지의 냉동보존기간이 품질에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구 (Study on the effect of refrigeration storage periods on the quality of frozen croissant dough)

  • This study is carried out to investigate the effect of any periods in the freezer and the product of value, moisture content, baking loss, specific volume loaf in manufncturing process thereof. The moisture content of the croissant slightly decreased as the periods passed in the freezer. And as passed periods frozen croissant dough dried naturally by the freezer fan. 1. As frozen periods passed croissant dough decreased moisture content and loaf volume. The volume is relation to the molsture content and croissant dough' gluten. Yeast is active but croissant dough is dried so pastry margarine's moisture vaporized little by little. 2. 1 day frozen bench time provided maximum specific loaf volume while croissant shape was unsettled, moisture content was highest. At the same dough croissant hardness had very sofi crust. 3. 1week and 2weets frozen dough had specific loaf volume and hardness with proper crust color. As the proper bench time provided best shape of croissant, color. 4. 4weeks and 8weeks frozen dough had over-al] value of croissant accelerating older product. As the same result, over Sweets frozen periods product were not available for sale and serving to customers. 5. By the sensory evaluation tests, over-all croissant as 1 week, 2weeks were significantly higher quality those than 6. 1day, 4weeks and 8weeks. Textural properties of croissant over 4weeks frozen periods so hard for every panel. According to the study, not croissant dough but also any other frozen dough(ex.Danish, brioche etc.)have to need proper bench time and 1week or 2weeks circulation making method have to given encouragement to practical pastry industry. Add to this study using only for frozen dough yeast instead of using fresh and instant

엘리뇨/라니냐와 정상 기간 동중국해 북부해역의 자치어의 군집구조 비교 (Comparison of Community Structure of Fish Larvae in the Northern East China Sea in Normal and El Niño/La Niña Periods)

  • The aim of this study was to compare community structure of larval fish species in the northern East China Sea during normal meteorological conditions in autumn 2009, during the El Ni$\tilde{n}$o period in 2009-2010, and during the La Nina period in 2010. Fifty taxa were recorded during the study period; the most dominant species were Benthosema pterotum and Gobiidae spp. In October 2008 during the normal period, warm water from the Tsushima Warm Current (TWC) intruded more into the surface and middle layers, and cold water affected by the Yellow Sea Cold Water (YSCW) intruded into the bottom layer. In October 2009 during the El Ni$\tilde{n}$o period, intrusion of the China Coastal Water (CCW), which has low salinity (<32.2 psu), was more apparent than intrusion of the TWC or YSCW. In October 2010 during the La Nina period, intrusion of the TWC and CCW was relatively weak, resulting in the lowest temperature and highest salinity observed during the study period in the eastern part of the study area. Hierarchical cluster, one-way ANOSIM (analysis of similarities), and SIMPER (similarity-percentages procedure) analyses provided two main results. First, the abundance of the most dominant larval fish species in autumn of the normal period was greater than that in autumn of the El Ni$\tilde{n}$o/La Nina periods, resulting in a significant difference in ichthyoplankton community structure between the periods. The abundance of Benthosema pterotum increased in the normal period, possibly influenced by the intrusion of cold water from the YSCW; the abundance of species residing in Korean waters (e.g., Gobiidae spp.) probably decreased during the El Ni$\tilde{n}$o/La Nina periods. The second finding was that the abundance of subtropical larval fish in autumn of the normal period was generally larger than that during autumn of the El Ni$\tilde{n}$o/La Nina periods. This could have been induced by the stronger intrusion of warm water from the TWC during the normal period. Although differences in oceanographic conditions between El Ni$\tilde{n}$o and La Nina periods were observed, the differences in ichthyoplankton community structure between the two periods were not significant.

Malmquist 생산성지수와 Luenberger 생산성지수의 이론적 관계와 실증적 분석 (The Theoretical Comparison of Malmquist and Luenberg Productivity Indices & Empirical Analysis)

  • Background: We measured productivity changes of regional public hospitals using both global Malmquist productivity index-based on global production possibility set over all the periods-and the traditional Malmquist productivity index and analyzed the factors of productivity change. Methods: The data used in this study is two annual inputs and two annual outputs of 32 regional public hospitals in Korea from 2005 to 2009 and the results such as distances and Malmquist productivity index and global Malmquist productivity index are obtained by an R program written for this study. Results: The results can be summarized as follows. Firstly, technical efficiencies of regional public hospitals are affected largely by scale efficiency than pure technical efficiency. Second, productivity progressed and technological change has more significant influence on productivity advance over the period between 2005 and 2009. Third, the circularity problem of the traditional Malmquist index is confirmed, and so the global Malmquist index without this problem are valid for the analysis. Conclusion: Though this study also has some limitations with the data of regional public hospitals with a short time span, it is the first study of hospitals using global Malmquist productivity index and later it can be expanded to private hospitals and longer time periods.

  • Based on the known results of the expected busy periods for the triadic Min (N, T, D) and Max (N, T, D) operating policies applied to a controllable M/G/1 queueing model, a relation between them is constructed. Such relation is represented in terms of the expected busy periods for the simple N, T and D, and the dyadic Min (N, T), Min (T, D) and Min (N, D) operating policies. Hence, if any system characteristics for one of the two triadic operating policies are known, unknown corresponding system characteristics for the other triadic operating policy could be obtained easily from the constructed relation.

A Study on Multi-Period Inventory Clearance Pricing in Consideration of Consumer's Reference Price Effect

  • It is difficult to determine an appropriate discount price for daily perishable products to increase profit from a long-term standpoint. Even if the discount pricing is efficient to increase profit of the day, consumers memorize the sales price and they might hesitate to purchase the product at a regular price the following day. The authors discussed the inventory clearance pricing for a single period in our previous study by constructing a mathematical model to derive an optimal sales price to maximize the expected profit by considering the reference price effect of demand. This paper extends the discussion to handle the discount pricing for multiple periods. A mathematical analysis is first conducted to reveal the properties on an objective function, which is the present value of total expected profits for multiple periods. An algorithm is then proposed to derive an optimal price for asymmetric consumers. Numerical experiments investigate the characteristics of the objective function and optimal pricings.

비만을 동반한 희발월경(稀發月經) 환자 치험 3례 (Three Cases Reports of Oligomenorrhea with Obesity)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to report the effect of Traditional Korean Medical therapy on 3 patients with Oligomenorrhea. who were obese. Methods: The overweight patients who had been suffering from Oligomenorrhea visited to OBGY department of Dongseo Oriental Medical Hospital. We diagnosed their cases as Supdam(濕痰) on the authority of the first oriental medical examination and treated them with Traditional Korean Medical therapy such as herbal medication and acupuncture therapy. The process of symptoms was evaluated by checking their Menstrual periods. Results: After Traditional Korean Medical therapy. Three cases of Oligomenorrhea were improved. Their Menstrual periods were shortened and Menstrual cycles were maintained. Conclusion: This study shows that overweight or obesity is connected with Oligomenorrhea. Traditional Korean Medical therapy can be effective for the management of Oligomenorrhea.

Teaching Social Justice through Three Time Periods of Sweatshop History

  • Due to the plethora of political, economic, and social challenges experienced on a global scale in the 21st century, students need to be concerned with more than their immediate surroundings (Johnson, 2005). When implemented in an educational setting, topics encompassing social justice may provide students with the confidence and skills to become "reflective, moral, caring, and active citizens in a troubled world" (Banks and Banks, 2009, p.5). The purpose of this article was to provide examples of undergraduate lessons focused on sweatshop conditions within three time periods of United States history that incorporate social justice into the course curriculum. By implementing social justice lessons into the curriculum, students can engage in critical reading, writing, and thinking about injustices faced by society. Girded with knowledge of past oppression within the apparel industry, students may become actively engaged in challenging social injustices in our world.

축산유역 수질특성 분석 (Analysis of Water Quality Characteristics in a Small-Scale Livestock Watershed)

  • Land application is one of the desirable management practices for animal wastes. Majority of livestock farms adopt composting and land applications for the management of animal waste in this country. Meanwhile, there are only a few studies related with the effects of land application on pollutant loading. This study investigates the water quality characteristics in a rural watershed with intensive livestock farming. The results indicate that major constituents of water quality are substantially increased at the sites near livestock farms and compost incorporated fields during the rainfall-runoff periods. There are no significant differences of water quality parameters among the sampling sites during no rain periods.
