  • Kawasaki disease (KD) is a leading cause of acquired heart disease in children. Yet the etiology of KD is still unknown and diagnosis depends on the exclusion of other diseases and the clinical manifestations meeting the defined criteria. Young infants frequently show atypical clinical courses and are frequently complicated with coronary aneurysms. Some cases show thrombocytopenia, which is known as one of the risk factors for complications with coronary aneurysms. So, a high index of suspicion is the most important factor for the diagnosis of KD in very young infants or adolescents whose clinical courses are equivocal. We report herein on a case of KD in an 80-day-old female infant with fever and seizure with bloody stool; laboratory findings were those of sepsis with disseminated intravascular coagulopathy. In spite of aggressive treatments, fever and thrombocytopenia persisted for two weeks and huge coronary aneurysms developed at the third week in all three major coronary arteries; the diameter of the right one was as large as the aortic annulus. Three months later, huge pulsatile masses developed in both axillas; these were found to be huge axillary aneurysms defined very clearly on multi-detector CT scan. She has been under follow up with antiplatelets and anticoagulation therapy with poor regression of the aneurysms.

  • In developing countries, the establishment of maritime colleges and the training of excellent merchant marine officers can greatly impact on the growth of the marine industry in a given country. The project to establish the Kenya Maritime College ('KMC') has been driven by the Kenyan government, which has been challenged by the growth of the marine industry in Korea. This study aims to the development of curriculum for the navigation science department of the KMC. To do this, firstly the Kenyan environments was surveyed. Then, IMO maritime education requirements, IMO model courses and curriculums from the navigation science departments of major maritime universities around the world were reviewed. Lastly, based on these surveys and reviews, curriculum for the navigation science department of the KMC was developed. This curriculum is comprised of an educational course that requires a total of 5 years of study, including 1 year of on-board training and a total of 200 credit hours (20 credit hours per semester). Although this curriculum has been developed to fit the environments of Kenya, it is expected to offer a point of reference for similar studies in other countries with the goal of standardizing maritime education internationally.

  • Insect pests have been one of the main constraints affecting turf sod cultivation areas, playgrounds, parks, golf courses, airports and other related recreational grounds. However, turfgrass research has been very limited and confined within a limited period of time compared to other branches of crop science in Korea. This review was surveyed from all papers in KCI (Korea Citation Index), SCI (Scientific Citation Index) and SCIE (SCI Expended) journals related to turfgrass research in Korea. Fifty two papers concerning turfgrass insect pest in Korea have hitherto been published in 8 different scientific journals since 1990. Thirty three papers (63.5% of total) were published in Weed and Turfgrass Science. The main topics of focus were divided into two parts; ecological study and control of insect pests. Before the 1990 decade, there were no scientific papers published in relation to turfgrass insect pest science. However, during the 1990, 2000 and 2010 decades, 9, 10 and 14 papers were published respectively in Weed and Turfgrass Science. From 1997, about 2 papers were published per year in the scientific journals. Thirty three insect pest species belonging to 13 families in 6 orders, one Eriophyidae mite, Aceria zoysia and one Armadillidae sowbug, Armadillidium vulgare, have hitherto been listed as turfgrass arthropod pests in Korea. Fifty percent of turfgrass insect pest papers published were focused on whitegrub, Adoretus tenuimaculatus, Popillia quadrigutta and earthworm research in Korea.

  • The purpose of this research is an assessment of Information Systems(IS) curriculums in Korea based on the IS 2002 model curriculum. Out of the 201 Korean universities, 60 universities have the IS discipline as a major or a department having an independent curriculum. Out of these 60 universities, 38 universities(63.4%) have the IS discipline in the business schools while the IS discipline in the rest of universities is located under the social science school and others. Information Systems as a field of academic study exists under a variety of different names. The different labels(Information Systems, Management Information Systems, Computer Information Systems, Information Management, e-commerce, e-business, etc.) reflect historical development of the field, different ideas about how to characterize it, and different emphases when programs were began. The result of mapping the IS courses into the IS 2002 model curriculum supports the fact that management as a reference discipline that provides underlying theories for IS as a particular new discipline should be its academic home. Within the IS courses, information technology area is the most popular. and followed by information systems fundamentals area, information systems theory and practice area, information systems development area, and information systems deployment and management process area.

  • This study analyzed the correlations between variables like characteristics related to admission, academic achievement, obtainment of a radiological technology license. A majority of participants were from Daegu and academic high schools. Many participants were accepted by general admission selection, and their reason to apply to Daegu Health College was high graduate employment. Their selection for the academic program was made by their parents and themselves. Those who took the same course twice held 35.1%, and those who got an academic warning took 8.5%. The degree of participants' academic achievement showed somewhat low, and they had difficulty in taking their major courses. The average grade for admission was lower in a following selection order: college graduates, general, special, and rural areas. The admission selections and taking science courses in high school showed little significant correlations with obtainment of a radiological technology license. However, the obtainment of the license had significant correlations with retaking the same course, getting an academic warning, and the degree of academic achievement. The results also revealed that the obtainment of the license had little significant correlations with a part-time job experience, having a boy/girlfriend, and student club participation, but it had significant correlations with accommodations and study club participation. In conclusion, it is important to point out that radiological technology graduates' obtainment of a license is closely related with the degree of their academic achievement and their college life.
