In high density recording system, the recording head field on a medium should be focused in small bit area and should have a sufficient value to overcome the medium coercivity, which resulted in head saturation. In this paper, an efficient method to access the head field and field gradient considering head saturation is presented. The magnetic vector potential on the head surface is pre-calculated considering head saturation in several cases and accumulated into database. The head field on the recording media is easily produced solving Laplace equation using accessed magnetic vector potential boundaries. The computed head field is compared with a quantified magnetic force microscopy measurement.

Near-field recording NFR), advanced optical storage technology, relies on maintaining a small gap between the optical head and the media. This can be accomplished by utilizing the flying optical head concept as in the magnetic recording. In this research, slider/suspension system and plastic disk are tested for their head/disk interface performance. CSS tests are conducted to monitor the frictional and flying characteristics of sliders.

The shingled magnetic recording method has interference between adjacent tracks. Furthermore, when read-head reads the data along the track, the head can be skewed by some physical effects. In this paper, in order to solve this problem, we propose a two-dimensional equalizer that uses two heads. If the head is skewed, it is possible to complement the performance by positioning the two heads at the center of the current track.

Heat Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) is one of the most promising candidates for high density magnetic storages over 1 Tb/$in^2$ areal density. Since the precise light delivery to the head is a key factor to realize HAMR application, it is required to establish the light delivery using micro laser module and micro actuator. For the careful control of micro actuator, a laser module was designed including laser diode, optical fiber, collimating lens, and fabricated V-groove substrate. In addition, the basic aligning method between the laser module and HAMR head was studied by the detection of current change in photo diode due to the amount of reflected light from the head.
Numerical method for analyzing the reading process in magnetic recording system is described. Hysteresis characteristics must be included in numerical analysis not only recording process but also reading process because of hysteretic behavior of recording media. Algorithm which is consisted of finite clement method for numerical analysis and Preisach model considered to be more appropriate method than Stoner-Wohlfarth model with spin curling mode for describing hysteresis characteristics is constructed. Equations to calculate waveform of reproduced voltage is proposed. Then, this is applied to perpendicular magnetic recording systems with pole type head and double layer media. Waveform of magnetic flux density and reproduced voltage induced in head coil is obtained. If the recording current increase in recording process, magnitude of reproduced voltage in reproducing process saturates. From this saturation curve, value of current which produce maximum voltage can be obtained.

The micro laser module was designed and prepared to deliver the light to the HAMR head. It consists of laser diode, photo diode and actuator to realize stable light delivery even though the head is fluctuated during the disk rotation. The optical evaluation was carried out with the actual distance between the light source and HAMR head with a range of reflectivity and it was found that the incident angle could be controlled within ${\pm}0.125^{\circ}$ to maintain same intensity into the HAMR head. It was also confirmed that the designed micro laser module is thermally stable without any severe effect on the magnetic head.

In 1957, the first magnetic disk drive compatible with a movable head was introduced as an external file memory device for computer system. Since then, magnetic disks have been improved by increasing the recording density, which has brought about the development of a high performance thin film magnetic head. The thin film magnetic head has a magnetic circuit on a ceramic substrate using IC technology. The physical property of the substrate material is very important because it influences the tribology of head/disk interface and also manufacturing process of the head. $Al_{2}O_{3}$-TiC ceramics, so called ALTIC, is known to be one of the best substrate materials which satisfies this property requirement. Even though the head is not in direct contact with the disk, frequent instantaneous contacts are unavoidable due to its high rotating speed and the close gap between them. This may cause damage in the magnetic recording media and, thus, it is very important that the magnetic head has a good wear resistance. $Al_{2}O_{3}$-TiC ceramics has an excellent tribological property in head/disk interface. Manufacturing process of thin film head is similar to that of IC, which requires extremely smooth and flat surface of the substrate. The substrate must be readily sliced into the heads without chipping. $Al_{2}O_{3}$-TiC ceramics has excellent machineability and mechanical properties. $Al_{2}O_{3}$-TiC ceramics was first developed at Nippon Tungsten Co. as cutting tool materials in 1968, which was further developed to be used as the substrate materials for thin film head in collaboration with Sumitomo Special Metals Co., Ltd. in 1981. Today, we supply more than 60% of the substrates for thin film head market in the world. In this paper, we would like to present the sintering process of $Al_{2}O_{3}$-TiC ceramics and its property in detail.
The method for analyzing the recording and reading process of magnetic recording system by numerical simulation is introduced. which can simulate the effect of elements of the magnetic recording system. During the whole simulation, hysteresis characteristics must be included. Preisach model and finite element method are used to construct the algorithm. From the wave of recording current, recorded pattern of magnetization in recording media is simulated in recording process, and then waveform of reading signal in head coil is obtained in reading process. To show the validity of this method, this is applied to perpendicular magnetic recording system. Waveform of recording signal and reproduced signal is obtained in several density. Pattern of reprocuced voltage magnitude according to increase of recording density shows roll-off curve.
The frequency of the recording current and the rotating speed of the recording media are Increase for the high densities in perpendicular magnetic recording system with high conductive pole tip head and soft magnetic under-layer. In the paper, the frequency Induced eddy current and velocity induced eddy currents are analyzed by non-linear 3-dimensional finite element analysis. It it turned out that the frequency induced eddy current decreases the amplitude of the recording fields, whereas the velocity induced eddy current only distorts the distribution of the recording fields in the recording media.
In this paper, perpendicular magnetic recording system which consists of a single pole head and a double, layer medium is analyzed by using 2D-finite element simulation and Preisach model for describing hysteresis characteristics. For confirming this method, we compare the calculated magnetic field intensity which is above the isolated transition of magnetization and scale up experimental data which have already published. The results show a good agreement and we can conclude that this method is very useful to analyze perpendicular magnetic recording system.
