Variation of the Switching Field of Composite Nanowires with Different Widths

  • The switching field of a 300 nm wide nanowire has been controlled by attaching a wide wire to it. The width of the wide wires varies from 700 nm to 2000 nm. While the connection of the two wires does not affect the switching field of the wide wires, it strongly affects the 300 nm-wire, resulting in a decrease of the switching field of the isolated wire from 175 Oe to 54 Oe when the 2000 nm-wire is connected to it. This result clearly shows that the switching field of the nanowire can be engineered by attaching a nucleation pad that has a different magnetic anisotropy.

  • The dc reactor type high-Tc superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL) is composed of three parts, a power converter, a magnetic core reactor(MCR) and a dc reactor. This study concerned with the power converter of the DC reactor type high-Tc SFCL. The rectifying devices which power converter of 6.6kV/200A SFCL consists of have to endure high voltage. We propose the dual mode power converter to reduce the voltage which each rectifying device endures. In the single phase the experiment and simulation of dual mode power converter and the simulation of power converter with one bridge rectifier are performed. The current of each system with different power converter has a same tendency and the voltage which rectifying device of dual mode power converter endures is reduced in half by comparison with that of power converter with one bridge rectifier. We found dual mode power converter can be applied to SFCL.

  • According to the historical documents and paintings in many civilizations, rocks that fell from the sky fascinated humans as the message from the God or supernaturals. Scientific progress allows humans to recognize these exciting extraterrestrial objects as meteorites. Meteorites contain a wealth of pivotal information regarding formation of the early Solar System. Meteorites also provide broader scientific insights on, for example, the origin of life, interplanetary transfer of life forms, massive depletion of biosphere on Earth, and evolution of lithosphere on Earth-like planetary bodies.

  • In this paper, the equation for the generated force is introduced, on the basis of Maxwell's electromagnetic equation, by dividing the air-gap magnetic field into the region of the constant amplitude and the region of the pulsating field in the both ends of iron core, in the case that the typical 3 phase winding is employed in the double sided 3 phase linear induction motor with sheet rotor in accrodance with the winding method of rotary induction machine. With the effect of the overhang region being taken into account, the result, in which the equation is established, inducates that theoretical values nearly coincides with the measured values in the interval of slip s=0-0.8.

  • The traveling wave type ultrasonic motor(USM) has no electro-magnetic circuits( coil or core). The driving principle of the USM is based on high-frequency mechanical vibrations and frictional force. The USM, thus, is fed by two-phase high - frequency sinusoidal inverter using its series resonant parasitic components. For the using of series resonant type inverter, it should be needed to a USM parasitic capacitance and a proper inductor chosen. In this paper, the values of optimal inductance are designed and the efficiency of USM drives is achieved. The effectiveness of the proposed design is demonstrated by experiments.

  • Recently, the micro on-off valves have been focused on core technology in the fields of the production line of semi-conductor chips and the micro fluid chips for bio-medical applications. A key characteristics for micro valve, operated by compressed air, are high speed response and great repeatability. Indeed, it is also important to keep the pressure on the cross-sectional area of the poppet to be constant regardless of the fluctuation of the pressure exerted on the ports. In this study, we have designed and analysed the high-speed and high flow rate micro on-off valve using the analogy of equivalent magnetic circuit and Finite Element Method(FEM) respectively. In case of poppet, flow field characteristic was analyzed by the variation of poppet and it was able to display flow field by changing the location of the poppet. Also, we verified possibility of the design through the static and dynamic pressure and the 3D distribution curve of the force by working the front poppet.

  • In this study, the $Nb_3Sn$ wire was tried to fabricate by internal tin process to investigate the relationship between the processing parameters in a cold working and the microstructure. The critical current densities of $Nb_3Sn$ wires were evaluated in magnetic fields at 4.2 K. $Nb_3Sn$ compound layer was found to be formed between Nb core and Cu-Sn. The Cu part in the wire transformed to Cu-Sn by the reaction with Sn and the Sn in the Cu-Sn part reacted with Nb.

  • In this paper, the requirements for the HID lamp igniter transformer capable of hot strike are described. A small size high voltage (HV) transformer composed of a Rod type ferrite core and aluminum foil is designed. The Electro Magnetic characteristics are simulated with Finite Element Methodology (FEM). The design guideline of the HV transformer that produces an output voltage with a peak value of 25kV and a pulse width of larger than loons for a 35W automotive HID ballast prototype is discussed as an illustrative example.

  • Since discovery, NdFeB permanent magnet has replaced application of the conventional magnets rapidly because of its superior physical and mechanical properties. With increasing consumption of power combined with energy resource depletion, energy efficiency is becoming more and more inportant. According to recent reports, almost almost half of the electric power is consumed by motor, and NdFeB magnets which are the core component of the motor play a key role on improving energy efficiency of the devices. In parallel with finding alternatives energy resources, research works improving energy efficiecy have been conducted world wide. Althogh NdFeB magnets usage have been expanded to various applications, key materials such as Nd and Dy, resouces lean heavily on specific area, China. Magnetic industry revently experienced skyrocketing price fluctuatioin of rare earth at around 2008. Chineses government's regulations worsened the situation and arose a necessity to develop methods to minimize rare earth use. In this presentation, POSCO's recent research works on rare earth reduction is presented including novel powder alloying method using nitrate precursors. Also, future R&D plans for rare earth free magnets is briefly introduced as well.

  • This paper analyzed longitudinal end effect occurred in linear induction motor by using I-d direct solution and its result is verified by 2-d Finite Element Method(FEM). Longitudinal end effect of linear induction motor caused by magnetic discontinuity in primary core and electric discontinuity in armature winding has been investigated by many researchers. In this paper, 1-d direct solution and boundary conditions proposed by Yamamura and Nasar is used to analyze end effect of linear induction motor and its solution is verified by 2-d FEM.
