  • The magnetic bio-sensor used the PHR (planar hall resistance) effect generated by the free layer in spin-valve giant magnetoresistance structure of Ta/NiFe/CoFe/Cu/NiFe/IrMn/Ta. The PHR element with micrometer size was fabricated through the photolithograph and dry etching process. The PHR signal with magnetic field was measured under the conditions of with and without single magnetic bead. A single magnetic bead of diameter $2.8\;{\mu}m$ was successfully detected using the PHR sensor. Therefore, the high resolution PHR sensor can be applied to bio-sensor application utilizing the output voltage variation of the PHR signals in the presence and absence of a single magnetic bead.

  • Polypropylene short fiber (PP)-clay particulate-epoxy ternary composites were prepared by reinforcing PP short fiber and clay particles in the range of 0.1 phr to 0.7 phr into epoxy resin. Prepared hybrid composites were characterized for their mechanical, thermal and flame retardant properties. The obtained results indicated an increase in impact resistance, tensile strength, flexural strength and Young's modulus to an extent (up to 0.5 phr clay and 0.5 phr PP short fiber) and then decreases as the reinforcing phases are further increased. The thermal stability of these materials are found to increase up to 0.2 phr clay and 0.2 phr PP addition, beyond which it is decreased. Addition of clay is found to have the negative effect on epoxy-PP short fiber composites, which is evident from the comparison of mechanical and thermal properties of epoxy-0.5 phr PP short fiber composite and epoxy-0.5 phr PP short fiber-0.5 phr clay composite hybrid. UL-94 tests conducted on the composite hybrids have showed a reduction in the burning rate. Morphological observations indicated a greater fiber pull with the addition of clay. The performed tests in the present study indicated that materials under investigation have promising applications in construction, agriculture and decorative purposes.

  • Objective : To evaluate the status of mobile personal health records (mPHR) applications of Atopic Dermatitis, assessing general characteristics, information content, features of PHR content and functions. Method : Searches were conducted from Android's Google Play and iOS's App Store. Main criteria used to include mPHRs were: providing health information of PHR function of Atopic Dermatitis; operating in Korean or English; for human. Selected mPHRs were analyzed considering general characteristics, information contents, data elements, and application features. Results : 19 applications were included in this study. 15 were providing health information. Data elements of information included general information, symptom, diagnosis, treatment, prevention, management and FAQ. No single application contained all seven data elements. Only Eight applications had PHR function. In the features analysis, one PHR applications contained all eight PHR functional features; saving profile function, profiles supported, password, import data, export data, information provided, progress chart and push-up alarm. Conclusion : mPHR is an emerging health care technology. The majority of existing mPHR applications only provide one-way information. Application designed to help users and doctors to exchange mutual information was the only one. Also, there was no application that can record the Traditional Korean Medicinal treatment information. However, as the mobile market continues to expand it is likely that more comprehensive mPHRs will be developed in the near future. New advancements in mobile technology can be utilized to enhance Tranditional Korean Medical health care.

  • Recent years have seen an increasing range of planar Hall resistive (PHR) sensor applications in the field of magnetic sensing. This study describes a new application of the PHR sensor to monitor a current. Initially, thermal drift experiments of the PHR sensor are performed, to determine the accuracy of the PHR signal output. The results of the thermal drift experiments show that there is no considerable drift in the signals attained from 0.1, 0.5, 1 and 2 mA current. Consequently, the PHR sensor provides adequate accuracy of the signal output, to perform the current monitoring experiments. The performances of the PHR sensor with bilayer and trilayer structures are then tested. The minimum detectable currents of the PHR sensor using bilayer and trilayer structures are $0.51{\mu}A$ and 54 nA, respectively. Therefore, the PHR sensor having trilayer structure is the better choice to detect ultra low current of few tens nanoampere.

  • With the advance of Information Technology (IT) and dynamic requirements, diverse application services have been provided for end users. With huge volume of these services and information, users are required to acquire customized services that provide personalized information and decision at particular extent of time. The case is more appealing in healthcare, where patients wish to have access to their medical record where they have control and provided with recommendation on the medical information. PHR (Personal Health Record) is most prevailing initiative that gives secure access on patient record at anytime and anywhere. PHR should also incorporate decision support to help patients in self-management of their diseases. Available PHR system incorporates basic recommendations based on patient routine data. We have proposed decision support service called "Smart CDSS" that provides recommendations on PHR data for diabetic patients. Smart CDSS follows HL7 vMR (Virtual Medical Record) to help in integration with diverse application including PHR. PHR shares patient data with Smart CDSS through standard interfaces that pass through Adaptability Engine (AE). AE transforms the PHR CCR/CCD (Continuity of Care Record/Document) into standard HL7 vMR format. Smart CDSS produces recommendation on PHR datasets based on diabetic knowledge base represented in shareable HL7 Arden Syntax format. The Smart CDSS service is deployed on public cloud over MS Azure environment and PHR is maintaining on private cloud. The system has been evaluated for recommendation for 100 diabetic patients from Saint's Mary Hospital. The recommendations were compared with physicians' guidelines which complement the self-management of the patient.

  • Amino terminated polyetherimide (AP-PEI) has been synthesized using 2,2'-bis [4-(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy)-phenyl]propane dianhydride (BPADA) and m-phenylenediamine. Polyetherimide containing pendant carboxy group (CP-PEI) has also been synthesized by the reaction of BPADA, m-phenylenediamine and 3,5-diaminobenzoic acid. The modified PEIs were used as toughening agent for diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A epoxy resin which was cured with nadic methyl anhydride (NMA). Thermal properties, fracture toughness ($K_{IC}$) and solvent resistance of toughened epoxy resin were measured. The $K_{IC}$ of epoxy resin containing 20 phr of AT-PEI was 2.88$MPa{\cdot}m^{0.5}$ without sacrificing thermal properties. The $K_{IC}$ of epoxy resin which contained 20 phr of CP-PEI was 2.82$MPa{\cdot}m^{0.5}$.
