  • Luminscence spectra and decay of crystalline hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-s-tetrazine (RDX) are observed at 90 K and the effects of photochemical reaction on the luminescence of RDX are investigated. The uv light from high power Hg lamp is used for the photochemical reaction of RDX. While no significant changes are observed in the luminescence spectra after the photochemical reaction, the intensity profile of the spectra changes with the progress of chemical reactions. The biexponential decay of luminescence is modified by chemical reactions. Features of the electronic states of crystalline RDX are discussed in relation to the luminescence.

  • The optical gain and the luminescence of a ZnO quantum well with MgZnO barriers is studied theoretically. We calculated the non-Markovian optical gain and the luminescence for the strained-layer wurtzite quantum well taking into account of the excitonic effects. It is predicted that both optical gain and luminescence are enhanced for the ZnO quantum well when compared with those of InGaN-AlGaN quantum well structure due to the significant reduction of the piezoelectric effects in the ZnO-MgZnO systems.

  • The upconversion (UC) luminescence of $Li^+/Er^{3+}/Yb^{3+}$ co-doped $CaWO_4$ phosphors and effects of $Yb^{3+}$ concentration are investigated in detail. Single crystallized $CaWO_4$ : $Li^+/Er^{3+}/Yb^{3+}$ phosphor can be obtained, co-doped up to 35.0/5.0/30.0 mol% ($Li^+/Er^{3+}/Yb^{3+}$) by solid-state reaction. Under 980 nm excitation, $CaWO_4$ : $Li^+/Er^{3+}/Yb^{3+}$ phosphor exhibited strong green UC emissions visible to the naked eye at 530 and 550 nm induced by the intra 4f transitions of $Er^{3+}$ ($^4H_{11/2}$, $^4S_{3/2}{\rightarrow}^4I_{15/2}$). The optimum doping concentrations of $Yb^{3+}$ that would result in the highest UC luminescence were determined, and a possible UC mechanism that depends on the pumping power is discussed in detail.

  • This paper reports on flexible plastic optical fiber (POF) fabric displays which are used to develop light-emitting clothing from photonic fabric. We first evaluated the luminescence value corresponding to different methods of processing flexible optical fibers, types of reflective fabric structure, and colors of the light. Moreover, we tried to identify the optimum conditions of the flexible POF fabric displays to realize high luminescence value. The processing methods that were compared were the "Pre-etching" method and the "Post-etching" method. On the basis of the reflective structure of the fabric, the fabrics were categorized as the "White fabric" and the "Reflective fabric." Analysis results showed that the effect of the processing method is more dominant than that of the types of reflective fabric structure. Further, the capability of the Post-etching method to increase luminescence value is slightly higher than that of the Pre-etching method. Further, the 'Reflective fabric' is slightly more efficacious as the base fabric to increase the luminescence value, than the White fabric is. Thus, optimum increase in luminance can be realized by employing the Post-etching method and the Reflective fabric as the base fabric.

  • We have investigated and analyzed the effects of the evaporation rate of MgO films on the MgO properties and the discharge characteristics of a plasma display panel(PDP). The MgO properties such as the crystal orientation, the surface roughness, the film structure, and cathode-luminescence (CL) spectra were inspected using XRD (X-ray diffraction), AFM(atomic force microscopy). And the discharging characteristics of the PDP such as the firing voltage, discharging current, and luminescence were measured using a vacuum chamber with oscilloscope (TDS 540C), current probe (TCP-312A), color meter (CS-100A) and etc. From the experiments results we confirmed the optimum evaporation rate at $5{\AA}/sec$, the MgO properties were shown to be strongly dependent on the evaporation rate, and the MgO properties had an effecton the optical and electrical characteristics. In other words, if the evaporation rates increase than $5{\AA}/sec$, the intensity of (200) orientation and cathode-luminescence (CL) spectra reduce, and the firing vlotage was increased. So the luminuous efficiency grows worse.

  • Red-emitting nitride phosphors recently attracted considerable attention because of their high thermal stability and high color rendering index properties. For excellent phosphor of white light-emitting-diode, ternary nitride phosphor of $Sr/SmSi_5N_8:Eu^{2+}$ with different $Eu^{2+}$ ion concentration were synthesized by solid state reaction method. In this work, red-emitting nitride $Sr/SmSi_5N_8:Eu^{2+}$ phosphor was successfully synthesized by using multi-step high frequency induction heat treatment. The effects of molar ratio of component and experimental conditions on luminescence property of prepared phosphors have been investigated. The structure and luminescence properties of prepared $Sr/SmSi_5N_8:Eu^{2+}$ phosphors were investigated by XRD and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The excitation spectra of $Sr/SmSi_5N_8:Eu^{2+}$ phosphors indicated broad excitation wavelength range of 300 - 550 nm, namely from UV to visible area with distinct enhanced emission peaks. With an increase of $Eu^{2+}$ ion concentration, the peak position of emission in spectra was red-shifted from 613 to 671 nm. After via multi-step heat treatment, prepared phosphor showed excellent luminescence properties, such as high emission intensity and low thermal quenching, better than commercial phosphor of $Y_3Al_5O_{12}:Ce^{3+}$. Using $Eu_2O_3$ as a raw material for $Eu^{2+}$ dopant with nitrogen gas flowing instead of using commercial EuN chemical for $Sr/SmSi_5N_8:Eu^{2+}$ synthesis is one of characteristic of this work.

  • Under the condition of femtosecond impulsive nonlinear optical irradiation, the bright and narrowed blue emission of silicon nanocrystal was observed. This synthetic method produced very small (~ 4 nm) oxide-capped silicon nanocrystal having probably ultra small emitting core (~ 1 nm) inferred from luminescence. By controlling the stirring condition, very high efficiencies of luminescence ( 4 fold higher) were obtained compared with the other conventional femtosecond laser fragmentation methods, which was attributed to the differences in hydration shell structure during the femtosecond laser induced irreversible phase transition reaction. When we properly adjusted the irradiation times of the white light continuum and stirring condition, very homogeneous luminescent silicon nanocrystal bands having relatively sharp lineshape were obtained, which can be attributable to the luminescent core site isolated and free from the surface defects.

  • Er3+/Yb3+-codoped NaLa(MoO4)2 colloidal nanocrystals were synthesized by pulsed laser ablations in de-ionized water and sodium dodecyl sulfate (NaC12H25SO4, SDS) aqueous solution for up-conversion (UC) luminescence bio-labeling applications. The influences of the SDS molecules on the crystallinities, crystal morphologies, crystallite sizes, and UC luminescence properties of the prepared Er3+/Yb3+-codoped NaLa(MoO4)2 colloidal nanocrystals were investigated in detail. Under a 980-nm excitation, the Er3+/Yb3+-codoped nanocolloidal NaLa(MoO4)2 suspension exhibited a weak red emission near 670 nm and strong green UC emissions at 530 and 550 nm, corresponding to the intra 4f transitions of Er3+ (4F9/2, 2H11/2, 4S3/2) → Er3+ (4I15/2). When the SDS solution was used, a smaller average crystallite size, narrower size distribution, and enhanced UC luminescence were observed. These characteristics were attributed to the amphoteric SDS molecules attached to the positively charged Er3+/Yb3+-codoped NaLa(MoO4)2 colloidal nanocrystals, effectively occupying the oxygen defect on their surfaces. The Er3+/Yb3+-codoped nanocrystalline NaLa(MoO4)2 suspension prepared in the SDS solution exhibited a remarkably strong green emission visible to the naked eyes.

  • A new technique to grow a manganese-doped zinc-sulfide(ZnS:Mn) has been proposed using the repeated deposition of the Hot Wall method. The optical characteristics and crystallinity for the ZnS and ZnS:Mn thin films deposited on a quartz glass substrate by the method were investigated. Also, The ZnS:Mn thin film elcetroluminescent devices were fabricated by the method to study luminescence characteristics. All films showed (111)-oriented cubic structure. By the repeated deposition, the deposition rates were decreased, and the optical characteristics and crystalline properties were improved, which clarifies that the method is effective to deposit the thin films with good crystallinity Futhermore, the crystallinity was more improved by the doping of Mn. Only one peak emission at around 585nm originating from Mn luminescent center is observed In the photoluminescent and electroluminescent spectra of ZnS:Mn films and the luminance of the ZnS:Mn-based thin film electroluminescent devices was obtained below 60cd/$m^2$ . The optical and crystalline properties, luminescence characteristics are discussed in terms of the effects of the repeated deposition and Mn-doping.
