  • Three dimensional atom probe tomography (3D APT) is applied to characterize the dissimilar metal joint which was welded between the Ni-based alloy, Alloy 690 and the low alloy steel, A533 Gr. B, with Alloy 152 filler metal. While there is some difficulty in preparing the specimen for the analysis, the 3D APT has a truly quantitative analytical capability to characterize nanometer scale particles in metallic materials, thus its application to the microstructural analysis in multi-component metallic materials provides critical information on the mechanism of nanoscale microstructural evolution. In this study, the procedure for 3D APT specimen preparation was established, and those for dissimilar metal weld interface were prepared near the fusion boundary by a focused ion beam. The result of the analysis in this study showed the precipitation of chromium carbides near the fusion boundary between A533 Gr. B and Alloy 152.

  • The title compound of nicotinato lead(II) complex [Pb$(C_5H_4NCOO)_2$] has been optimized at B3LYP/LANL2DZ and HF/LANL2DZ levels of theory. The calculated results show that the lead(II) ion adopts 2- coordinate geometry, which is the same as its crystal structure and different from the 4-coordinate geometry of isonicotinato lead(II) complex. Atomic charge distributions indicate that during forming the title compound, each nicotinic acid ion transfers their negative charges to central lead(II) ion. The electronic spectra calculated by B3LYP/LANL2DZ level show that there exist two absorption bands, which have some red shifts compared with those of isonicotinato lead(II) complex and the electronic transitions are mainly derived from intraligand $\pi$ -$\pi$ transition and ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) transition. CIS-HF method is not suitable for the system studied here. The thermodynamic properties of the title compound at different temperatures have been calculated and corresponding relations between the properties and temperature have also been obtained. The second order optical nonlinearity was calculated, and the molecular hyperpolarizability was $1.147754{\times}10^{-30}$ esu.

  • 2-Dimensional inorganic nanoparticles with high surface area and ion-exchangeable properties have been continuously growing based on nanotechnology in the field of nanomedicine. Among one of the 2-D nanoparticles, layered double hydroxide (LDH) has been intensively explored as drug delivery due to its low toxicity, enhanced cellular permeability, and high drug loading capacity. Moreover, controllable chemical composition makes possible varying isomorphic layered materials for therapy and imaging of diseases. In this review, specific structural characteristics of LDH were introduced, and its potential for application as a biocompatible therapeutic agent and diagnostic one was addressed in nuclear medicine, one of promising fields in nanomedicine.

  • Recently, a self-organizing process that occurs during the anodization of aluminum in acidic electrolytes has attracted a vast amount of research attentions, coupled with the ever-increasing demand for the development of effective, inexpensive and technologically simple methods for the synthesis of low-dimensional nanostructures over a macroscopic area overcoming many of the drawbacks of conventional lithographic techniques. In this presentation, recent progress in the fabrication of ordered nanoporous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO), including conventional anodization techniques, newly developed pulse anodization, hard anodization processes, and generic approaches to three-dimensional pore structures with periodically modulated diameters. Discussion will also cover the applications of AAO for the development of structurally well-defined extended arrays of low-dimensional nanostructures, such as nanodots, nanotubes, and nanowires, which could be model systems in investigating a diverse range of research problems in chemistry and physics and also be starting materials in realizing advanced electronic devices.

  • Low Reynolds number, dilute, and surfactant-free bubble suspensions are prepared by mechanical mixing after introducing carbon dioxide bubbles into a Newtonian liquid, polyol. The apparent shear viscosity is measured with a wide-gap parallel plate rheometer by imposing a simple shear flow of capillary numbers(Ca) of the order of $10^{-2}$ ~ $10^{-1}$ and for various gas volume fractions ($\phi$). Effects of capillary numbers and gas volume fractions on the viscosity of polyol foam are investigated. At high capillary number, viscosity of the suspension increases as the gas volume fraction increases, while at low capillary number, the viscosity decreases as the gas volume fraction increases. An empirical constitutive equation that is similar to the Frankel and Acrivos equation is proposed by fitting experimental data. A numerical simulation for deformation of a single bubble suspended in a Newtonian fluid is conducted by using a newly developed two-dimensional numerical code using a finite volume method (FVM). Although the bubble is treated by a circular cylinder in the two dimensional analysis, numerical results are in good agreement with experimental results.

  • We have investigated frequency dependant conductivity (or permittivity) of low dimensional oxide structures represented by [($Sr_{0.75}$, $La_{0.25}$)$TiO_3$]$_1$/1$[SrTiO_3]_n$ superlattices. The low dimensional oxide superlattice was made by cumulative stacking of one unit cell thick La doped $SrTiO_3$ and $SrTiO_3$ with variable thickness from 1 to 6 unit cell, i,e, [($Sr_{0.75}$, $La_{0.25}$)$TiO_3$]$_1$/$[SrTiO_3]_n$ (n=1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6). We found two kinds of relaxation when n is 3 and 4, while, inductance component was observed at n=1. This behavior can be explained by electron modulation in ($Sr_{0.75}$, $La_{0.25}$)$TiO_3/SrTiO_3$ superlattices. When n is 1, electrons by La doping well extend to un-doped layer. Therefore, the transport of superlattices follows bulk-like behavior. On the other hand, as n increased, the doped electrons became two types of carrier: one localized and the other extended. These results in two kinds of transport phase. At further increase of n, most of doped electrons are localized at the doped layer. This result shows that dimensionality of the oxide structure significantly affect the transport of oxide nanostructures.

  • Direct plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition (PEALD) are widely used for $SiO_2$ and SiON thin film process in current semiconductor industry. However, this exhibits poor step coverage for three-dimensional device structure due directionality of plasma species as well as plasma damage on the substrate. In this study, to overcome this issue, low temperature (< $300^{\circ}C$) $SiO_2$ and SiON thin film processes were studied using inductively coupled plasma (ICP) type remote PEALD with various reactant gases such as $O_2$, $H_2O$, $N_2$ and $NH_3$. It was confirmed that the interfacial properties such as fixed charge density and charge trapping behavior of thin films were considerably improved by hydrogen species in $H_2O$ and $NH_3$ plasma compared to the films grown with $O_2$ and $N_2$ plasma. Furthermore, the leakage current density of the thin films was suppressed for same reason.

  • Dimensional stability of LCD polarization film consisted of triacetyl cellulose (TAC) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) film has been studied and especially, the effect of PVA adhesive on the dimensional stability has been considered as function of deacetylation and molecular weight of PVA adhesive. The maximum adhesion strength between TAC and PVA film was obtained in the laminate using PVA adhesive with 70% of OH content and the effect of molecular weight on the adhesion strength was only pronounced in the laminate using PVA adhesive with OH content above 70%. It was found that the optimum dimensional stability of TAC/PVA/TAC laminate (polarizing film) was obtained when applied PVA adhesive has low molecular weight and it was more dependent upon the OH content than the adhesion strength between TAC and PVA films.

  • Less power consumption, lower cost, smaller size and more functionality are the increasing demands for consumer electronic devices. The three dimensional(3-D) TSV packaging technology is the potential solution to meet this requirement because it can supply short vertical interconnects and high input/output(I/O) counts. Cu(Copper) has usually been chosen to fill the TSV because of its high conductivity, low cost and good compatibility with the multilayer interconnects process. However, the CTE mismatch and Cu ion drift under thermal stress can raise reliability issues. This study discribe the thermal stress reliability trend for successful implementation of 3-D packaging.

  • Clear thermoplastic retainers have been widely used in daily orthodontics; however, they have inherent limitations associated with thermoplastic polymer materials such as dimensional instability, low strength, and poor wear resistance. To solve these problems, we developed a new type of clear orthodontic retainer that incorporates multi-layer hybrid materials. It consists of three layers; an outer polyethylenterephthalate glycol modified (PETG) hard-type polymer, a middle thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) soft-type polymer, and an inner reinforced resin core. The resin core improves wear resistance and mechanical strength, which prevent unwanted distortion of the bucco-palatal wall of the retainer. The TPU layer absorbs impact and the PETG layer has good formability, optical qualities, fatigue resistance, and dimensional stability, which contributes to increased support from the mandibular dentition, and helps maintain the archform. This new type of vacuum-formed retainer showed improved mechanical strength and rate of water absorption.
