  • High performance concrete is prone to large autogenous shrinkage due to its low water to binder ratio (W/B). The autogenous shrinkage of concrete is caused by self-desiccation as a result of water consumption by the hydration of cement. In this study, the autogenous shrinkage of high performance concrete with and without fly ash was Investigated. The properties of fresh concrete, slump loss, air content, and flowability as well as the mechanical properties, compressive strength and modulus of elasticity, were also measured. Test results was shown that the autogenous shrinkage of concrete increased as the W/B decreased. For the same W/B, the autogenous shrinkage of high strength concrete with fly ash was considerably reduced although the development of its compressive strength was delayed at early ages. Furthermore, the autogenous shrinkage and compressive strength of high strength concrete were more rapidly developed than those of normal strength concrete. It was concluded that fly ash could improve the quality of high strength concrete with respect to the workability and autogenous shrinkage.

  • It is well practised in the field of concrete engineering that the effort of improving the low slumped concrete and uplifting the quality of the soft concrete by adopting the superplasticizer. In this paper, an attempt is made to find out the optimum mix design of the superplasticized concrete with an unit weight of cement 400 kg and the range of $19{\pm}1cm$ of slump by variatlng the sand percentage, unit water content and the dosage of superplasticizer. As a result, the author obtained the basic idea on the optimum mix design and strength of superplasticized concrete. On the other hand, it is also considered during the research the method of preventing the slump loss of the superplasticized concrete due to the delayed time after concrete mixing.

  • The spalling phenomenon occurs in high-strength concrete when several factors such as sharp temperature increase, high water content, low water/cement ratio and local stress concentration in material combine in the concrete material. On the basis of the factors, the preventing methods from the spalling are known as reduction of temperature increase, preventing of concrete fragmentation and fast drying of internal moisture. In this study, the reduction of temperature increase was proposed as the most effective spalling-preventing method among the spalling-preventing methods. Engineered cementitious composite for fireproof and repair materials was developed in order to protect the new and existing RC structures form exterior deterioration factors such as fire, cloride ion, etc. This study was carried out to estimate the fire-resisting performance of high strength concrete slab or tunnel lining by repaired engineered cementitious composite (ECC) or fiber reinforcement cemetitious composite (FRCC) under fire temperature curve. and them we will descrike the result of HIDA tunnel in Japan.

  • PURPOSES: The purpose of this study is to compare the alkali-silica reactivity for mortar bar and concrete prism specimens using crushed aggregates of 5 types in Korea. And the alkali-silica reactivity for those aggregates are measured by chemical test method. METHODS: The alkali-silica reactivity for those aggregates was measured by chemical test method of KS F 2545, mortar-bar test of KS F 2546, accelerated mortar-bar test method of ASTM C 1260 and concrete prism test method of ASTM C 1293, relatively. RESULTS: The alkali-silica reactivity for those aggregates was verified by chemical test of KS F 2546 and accelerated mortar-bar test of ASTM C 1260. However, it was not by mortar-bar test of KS F 2546 and concrete prism test of ASTM C 1293. CONCLUSIONS: The above results showed that relationship among the four test methods were very low. The results from 3 types of test methods using cement-aggregate combinations appeared to be different. Because the environmental conditions of test methods for measuring the alkali-silica reactivity such as equivalent alkali content(external source), humidity, temperature, and times were different though the aggregates were same. Moreover, alkali-silica reactivity showed the biggest impact when alkalis were supplied form outside and exposed to environmental conditions. The accelerated mortar-bar test method seems to be most appropriate test method for concrete structures exposed to alkali environment.

  • In order to reduce the usage of cement slurry in grouting engineering and consume the tunnel excavation waste soil, a new geopolymeric grouting material (GGM) was prepared by combine completely weathered granite (CWG) and blast-furnace slag (BFS), which can be applied to in-situ grouting treatment of completely weathered granite strata. The results showed CWG could participate in the geopolymerization process, and GGM slurry has the characteristics of short setting time, high flowability, low viscosity, high stone rate and high mechanical strength, and a design method of grouting pressure based on viscosity evolution was proposed. By adjusted the content of completely weathered granite and alkali activator concentration, the setting time of GGM were ranged from 5 to 30 minutes, the flowability was more than 23.5 cm, the stone rate was higher than 90%, the compressive strength of 28 days were 7.8-16.9 MPa, the porosity were below 30%. This provides a novel grouting treatment and utilizing excavated soil of tunnels in the similar strata.

  • Incorporation of wastes glass aggregate in mortar may cause crack and this may result in the strength reduction due to alkali-silica reaction(ASR) and expansion. The purposes of this study were to investigate the properties of alkali-silica expansion and strength loss through a series of experiments which had a main experimental variables such as waste glass aggregate contents, glass colors, fiber types, and fiber contents. The steel fibers and polypropylene fibers were used for constraining the ASR expansion and mortar cracking. From the result, green waste glass was more suitable than brown one because of low expansion. And in this accelerated ASTM C 1260 test of waste glass, pessimum content can not be found. Also, when used the fibers with waste glass, there is an effect on reduction of expansion and strength loss due to ASR between the alkali in the cement paste and the silica in the waste glass. Specially, adding 1.5 vol.% of steel fiber to 20% of waste glass, the expansion ratio was reduced by 40% and flexural strength was developed by up to 110% comparing with only waste glass(80$\^{C}$ H$_2$O curing).

  • In recent years, the terminology "High-Performance Concrete(HPC)" has been introduced into the construction industry. Most high-performance concretes have a high cementitious content and a low water-cementitious material ratio. The proportions of the individual constituents vary depending on local preferences and local materials. Therefore, many trial batches are usually necessary before a successful mix is developed. The objective of this experiments is to investigate the fundamental properties of high performance concrete based binary cimentitious materials such as ordinary portland cement and ground granulated blast furnace slag. The results from the study will be utilized as the basic data and guideline in making standard mixproportions and the manufacture, construction work and quality control of HPC

  • The various promotion countermeasures such as solidification, carbonization, and the creation of cement materials have been considered to existing treatment methods such as incineration and the creation of composts, since direct landfill was prohibited for encouraging the recycling based on the sludge treatment on land. The Main objective of this study is to investigate the feasibility of co-incineration for MSW (Municipal Solid Waste) and SS (Sewage Sludge) through the change of heat and atmospheric pollutants. In this study, LHV (Low Heating Value) is 100~300 kcal/kg because the MC (Moisture Content) of de-hydrated sewage sludge is approximately 80%. From the results, we knew the feasibility of co-incineration for MSW (80%) and SS (20%). As the co-incineration rate of SS up to 20% became higher, the loading of heat and atmospheric pollutants was not influenced.

  • Recycled aggregates are made from construction wastes, and they have many national and social benefits by saving energy, developing substitute resources, and protecting environment. However, low-quality recycled aggregate with low density and high absorption rate cannot be used for structural concrete aggregate but is used mainly for low added value. Therefore, this study aims to identify the characteristics of the materials of recycled aggregates made after crashing and pulverizing waste concrete. For this, their major physical characteristics of cement content, absolute dry density, absorption rate, etc. were reviewed to make a mix design (draft) for the production of the secondary product and performance evaluation was done on the bending strength, absorption rate, bending strength after freezing and thawing, compressive strength, air-dried gravity, etc. of the test products produced by applying the mix design to compare the results with the quality standards of GR mark. The results of the tests showed that the substitution rate of recycled aggregate increased to 50~90 %, which is of superior quality than the performance standards of GR F 4007. Therefore, it is thought that they can be used for various construction works with certain physical characteristics applicable to the production of secondary concrete products using recycled aggregates.

  • Because the allowable current loading of buried electrical transmission cables is frequently limited by the maximum permissible temperature of the cable or of the surrounding ground, there is a need for cable backfill materials to be maintained at a low thermal resistivity during the service period. Temperatures greater than $50^{\circ}C$ to $60^{\circ}C$ may lead to breakdown of cable insulation and thermal runaway if the surrounding backfill material is unable to dissipate the heat as rapidly as it is generated. This paper describes the results of studies aimed at the development of backfill material to reduce the thermal resistivity. A large number of different additive materials were tested to determine their applicability as a substitute material. The results of Dong-rim river sand (relatively uniform) show that as water content level increases, thermal resistivity tends to decrease, whereas the thermal resistivity on dry condition is very high value($260^{\circ}C-cm/watt$). In addition, other materials(such as Jinsan granite screenings, A-2(sand and gravel mixture), E-1(rubble and granite screenings mixture) and SGFC(sand, gravel, fly-ash and cement mixture)) are well-graded materials with low thermal resistivity($100^{\circ}C-cm/watt$ when dry). Based on this research, 4 types of improved materials were suggested as the environmentally friendly backfill materials with low thermal resistivity.
