  • The objective of this study is to select fuel/air feeders for reliable operation of BOP(Balance of Plant) system for a DMFC (direct methanol fuel cell). A 42-cell 50W DMFC stack is considered for performance comparison of selected fuel pumps and air blowers. The present stack has two serpentine anode channels with depth of 1.2 mm and rib of 1 mm and one serpentine cathode channel with depth of 1.5 mm and rib of 1 mm. The pressure drop through the stack is estimated in advance by utilizing the pre-existing loss coefficients data for various flow configurations. Then the operating points of feeders are determined at the balance point of the flow impedance curves for the channels in the DMFC stack and the selected pump and blower performance curves. After estimating the operating flow rates in the anode and cathode channels, the flow measurement with the selected feeders is performed for the comparison with the estimated flow rates. The measured results show that the discrepancy between the estimation and the measurement for the cathode is about 26%, about 3% for the anode

  • A new analytical method to determine the theoretical dispersion curves of Rayleigh wave in multilayered elastic media is developed. The method developed in this study gives the solutions for unlimited frequency, and is essential part of surface wave techniques to evaluate the layer profiles and dynamic properties of soils and pavement systems. Delta-Matrix technique is utilized to overcome the overflow and loss of precision problem inherent in the original Thomson-Haskell formulation at high frequencies. Conventional inversion methods based on the original Thomson-Haskell formulation lead to erroneous results due to the limitations on the layer profiles and the magnitude of frequency. The method developed in this study establishes the base of the research on more accurate and efficient inversion method, especially for the pavement systems as well as the natural soils.

  • Ground motion records are commonly used for fragility curves (FCs) developing utilized in seismic loss estimating analysis for earthquake prone zones. These records could be 'real', say the recorded acceleration time series or 'simulated' records consistent with the regional seismicity and produced by use of alternative simulation methods. This study has focused on fragility curves developing for masonry buildings through computational 'simulated' ground motion records while evaluating the properness of these fragilities compared to the curves generated by the use of 'real' records. Assessing the dynamic responses of structures, nonlinear computational time history analyses through the equivalent single degree of freedom systems have been implemented on OpenSees platform. Accordingly, computational structural analyses of multi-story 3D frame structures with different stiffening members considering soil interaction have been carried out with finite element software according to (1992) Earthquake East-West component. The obtained results have been compared to each frame regarding soil interaction. Conclusion and recommendations with the discuss of obtaining findings are presented.

  • A deep recursive bidirectional Cuda Deep Neural Network Long Short Term Memory (Bi-CuDNNLSTM) layer is recruited in this paper to predict the entire force time histories, and the corresponding hysteresis and backbone curves of reinforced concrete (RC) bridge piers using experimental fast and slow cyclic tests. The proposed stacked Bi-CuDNNLSTM layers involve multiple uncertain input variables, including horizontal actuator displacements, vertical actuators axial loads, the effective height of the bridge pier, the moment of inertia, and mass. The functional application programming interface in the Keras Python library is utilized to develop a deep learning model considering all the above various input attributes. To have a robust and reliable prediction, the dataset for both the fast and slow cyclic tests is split into three mutually exclusive subsets of training, validation, and testing (unseen). The whole datasets include 17 RC bridge piers tested experimentally ten for fast and seven for slow cyclic tests. The results bring to light that the mean absolute error, as a loss function, is monotonically decreased to zero for both the training and validation datasets after 5000 epochs, and a high level of correlation is observed between the predicted and the experimentally measured values of the force time histories for all the datasets, more than 90%. It can be concluded that the maximum mean of the normalized error, obtained through Box-Whisker plot and Gaussian distribution of normalized error, associated with unseen data is about 10% and 3% for the fast and slow cyclic tests, respectively. In recapitulation, it brings to an end that the stacked Bi-CuDNNLSTM layer implemented in this study has a myriad of benefits in reducing the time and experimental costs for conducting new fast and slow cyclic tests in the future and results in a fast and accurate insight into hysteretic behavior of bridge piers.

  • Field measured sediment yield from an experimental urbanized basin was compared with the predicted sediment yields with RUSLE (Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation), and MUSLE (Modified Universal Soil Loss Equation). The experimental basin is 3.1km2 in area and fifty six percent of the total area had been urbanized. The hydrological data have been measured with T/M at the outlet of the experimental basin. Runoff from the basin and rainfall depth of the basin were measured every minute. Bed load and suspended load were also measured for a given flow rate. Runoff rating curves and sediment rating curve were developed for the last three years. RUSLE showed scattered prediction results but the average of the prediction values was close to the measured one. Meanwhile, MUSLE showed linear correlation between the measured sediment yield and predicted one with high correlation coefficient. But MUSLE predicts high values than the real one. Therefore, adjustment is necessary to apply MUSLE in estimation of sediment yield from the experimental urbanized basin.

  • Backfill grouting and realistic convergence distribution were not properly considered in previous studies on 2D numerical analysis of a shield TBM tunnel. In this study, a modeling method was suggested to cope with this problem by considering a realistic convergence distribution and proper properties of backfill grouting. To this end, the influence of gap parameter and depth of rock cover on volume loss and composed of ground volume loss around tunnel excavation and surface volume loss were analyzed with a single layer of weathered soil. As a result, most of surface settlements were occurred immediately after excavation. Additional, as depth of rock cover and gap parameter increased, the influence range of surface settlement curves obtained from 2D numerical analyses became broader than a suggested theoretical equation. Therefore, it is inferred that gap parameter should be applied based on load distribution ratio and the property of backfill grouting properly considered for the estimation of the precise behavior of a shield TBM tunnel in 2D numerical analysis.

  • The present study on nitrogen-diluted non-premixed counterflow flames with finite burner diameters experimentally investigates the important role of the outer edge flame in flame extinction. Flame stability diagrams mapping the flame extinction response of nitrogen-diluted non-premixed counterflow flames to varying global strain rates in terms of the burner diameter, burner gap, and velocity ratio are explored. There exists a critical nitrogen mole fraction beyond which the flame cannot be sustained, and also the curves of the critical nitrogen mole fraction versus the global strain rate have C-shapes in terms of burner diameter, burner gap, and velocity ratio. In flames with sufficiently high strain rates, the curves of the critical nitrogen mole fractions versus global strain rate collapse into one curve, and the flames can have the 1-D flame response of typical diffusion flames. Three flame extinction modes are identified: flame extinctions through the shrinkage of the outer edge flame with and without an oscillation of the outer edge flame prior to the extinction and flame extinction through a flame hole at the flame center. The measured flame surface temperature and a numerical evaluation of the fractional contribution of each term in the energy equation show that the radial conductive heat loss at the flame edge destabilizes the outer edge flame, and the conductive and convection heat addition to the outer edge from the trailing diffusion flame stabilizes the outer edge flame. The radial conductive heat loss at the flame edge is the dominant extinction mechanism acting through the shrinkage of the outer edge flame.

  • This paper outlines how the on-line performance monitoring system can be used to improve the efficiency and maintenance of the equipments. And a method of the heat rate allocation to each equipment was suggested to monitor the performance of combined cycle power plants. This calculates the expected heat rate of current conditions and compares it with actual values. Loss allocation in heat rate is reconciled by calculating the magnitude of the deficiency contributed by major components, such as the gas turbine, heat recovery steam generator, steam turbine and condenser. Expected power output is determined by a detailed model and correction curves of the plant. This simulation models are found to reproduce high accuracy in behavior of the cycle for various operating conditions, both in design and in off-design condition. Errors are lower than 2% in most cases.

  • An improved method to measure the dynamic viscoelastic properties of elastomers is proposed. The method is based on the analysis of forced oscillation of a cylindrical sample loaded with inertial mass. No special equipment or instrumentation other than the ordinary vibration measurement apparatus is required. Typical measurement of the viscoelastic properties of a silicone rubber $Silastic^{(R)}$ S2 were measured over the wide frequency range from 10 Hz to 3 kHz under the action of wide region of deformation from $10^{-4}%$ to 5%. It was shown that modulus of elasticity and loss tangent fall on the single curves when the ratio of load mass to sample mass changed from 1 to 20.

  • Today most companies are designing their automobile shapes by using 3 dimensional CAD software, CATIA. And they used to design 2 dimensional press dies to do some elastic work on their products, but they are currently trying to make use of dimensional software, Pro-Engineer. In this case, they have to change the 3 dimensional product design data to the proper format data for the following process. This paper will show the data loss and the deformation during data transfer between CATIA and Pro-Engineer, and then suggest a solution for these problems. Product's surface will be automatically placed by automatic press tipping angle setting in CATIA to prevent the product from being stuck in the press die. The 2 dimensional section view which is based on the tipping angle setting is created by Z-map. And, to remove the data loss and the data deformation in pro-Engineer, the product surface are delivered to the next process after it is changed to the 2 dimensional Z-map curves in CATIA. finally, this paper suggests an algorithm to develop the automatic design program for the press layout which regenerates product shape surface from the previous process.
