Graduated compression stockings (GCS) have been widely used for the prophylaxis and treatment of venous diseases. Their gradient pressure function largely related to their fabric structure and material properties. By combing fabric physical testing and wear trials, this study investigated the GCSs fabric structure and material properties at different locations along the stocking hoses, and quantitatively analyzed the effects of fabrics on skin pressure longitudinal and transverse distributions. We concluded that, Structural characteristics and material properties of stocking fabrics were not uniform along the hoses, but a gradual variation from ankle to thigh regions, which significantly influenced the corresponding skin pressure gradient distributions; Tensile (WT, EM) and shearing properties (G) generated most significant differences among ankle, knee and thigh regions along the stocking hose, which significantly influenced the skin pressure lognitudinal gradient distribution. More material indices generating significant gradual changes occurred in the fabric wale direction along stocking hose, meaning that materials properties in wale direction would exert more important impact on the skin pressure gradient performances. And, the greater tensibility and smoother surface of fabric in wale direction would contribute to put stocking on and off, and facilitate wearers' leg extension-flexion movements. The indices of WT and EM of stocking fabrics in series A have strong linear correlations with skin pressure lognitudinal distribution, which largely related to their better performances in gradual changes of material properties. Skin pressure applied by fabric with same material properties produced pronounced differences among four different directions around certain cross-sections of human leg, especially at the ankle region; and, the skin pressure magnitudes at ankle region were more easily influenced by the materials properties, which were considered to be largely related to the anatomic structure of human leg.
Anthropometric and body compositional changes and the outcomes of the pregnancies of 90 healthy Korean women were investigated in a longitudinal study. Their weight increased from 51.3$\pm$5.9kg to 65.1$\pm$7.8kg during their pregnancies. The total weight gain was 13.8$\pm$4.5kg, and therefore, weekly weight gain was 340$\pm$110g during the entire period of the pregnancy. The weight gain was composed of approximately 50-60% fat mass and 40-50% fat-free mass. Skinfold thicknesses, both of triceps and subscapular, increased during the pregnancies. The fat mass calculated from skinfold thickness and that measured with bioelectrical impedance analysis went on increasing during the pregnancies. Although there was a considerable difference with respect to the fat mass observed using the three methods, fat mass gain was 5.0-6.1kg and fat-free mass gain was 4.0-5.3kg from the first trimester to the third trimester of pregnancies. There were significant correlations between maternal anthropometric parameters and indices of pregnancy outcomes. Especially, the infant's birth weight was associated with maternal pre-pregnancy weight and weight gains during the pregnancies. The infant's birth length was related to the maternal weight observed at term(p<0.05) and weight gain during the entire pregnancies (p<0.05) . Neither increase of fat mass nor fat-free mass affected the outcomes of pregnancy. These results show that maternal weight gain during pregnancy is led by increments of approximately above 50% fat mass. The fat mass increase seems to be larger in central areas than in subcutaneous areas. Maternal weight gain during pregnancy, especially during late pregnancy, is a factor affecting the birth weight and length of infant. On the basis of the body compositional changes, it can be predicted that the additional energy requirement for pregnancy in Korean women is more than 200-230 MJ (64,500-76,250kca1). This study investigated longitudinal changes in riverbed materials properties and temporal alteration of river channel geomorphology in the Geum River basin, where two multipurpose dams(Yongdam Dam and Daecheong Dam) were built in upstream area. We carried out grain size distribution analyses and measured soil organic matter contents of riverbed materials taken at the upper and lower sites of the two large dams. We also estimated the channel width, bar area and vegetation encroachment using the oldest map and aerial photographs taken before and after the construction of the dams. The results can contribute to increasing understandings of dam induced habitat alteration in river ecosystem.
Serial ultrasonography was performed to measure the normal appearance of uterine during estrous cycle and to determine whether the unterine appearance was related to the sex hormone, progesterone and estrogen. The uterine appearances, shape, diameter and echogenicity were daily monitored with ultrasonography in 9 Miniature Schnauzer dogs undergoing II estrous cycles. During proestrus and estrous, the uterus became hypoechoic but developed hyperechoic luminal echo. In the longitudinal view, the shape of the uterus occasionally changed from rectangular to coiled or serpentine, compared to other stages of the cycle. The diameter of the uterus during proestrus and estrous was larger (range: 0.60${\sim}$0.86 mm) than other stages (range: 0.48${\sim}$0.62 mm) of the cycle. The rising estrogen concentrations (range: 14.51${\sim}$16.86 pg/ml) in plasma during proestrus correlated with changes in the uterus (p<0.05). Progesterone concentrations were 0.08${\sim}$0.15 ng/ml at the onset of proestrus, but rose 1.06${\sim}$1.26 ng/ml at the end of proestrus. There was no relation to progesterone concentration from onset of estrus (p>0.05). There was dramatical changes in normal uterus and sex hormone during estrous cycle. Especially, the appearance, shape and diameter of uterus were related to plasma estrogen concentration during proestrus, correlated with other stages of the cycle.
Objectives : HT042 is a combination of three herbal extracts from the roots of Astragalus membranaceus, the stems of Eleutherococcus senticosus and the roots of Phlomis umbrosa, which has been demonstrated to increase longitudinal bone growth rate. The aim of this study was to assess the safety of HT042 after repeated oral administration. Methods : A 14-day repeated oral dose toxicity study was conducted using male and female Sprague-Dawley rats. HT042 was administered orally at repeated doses of 500, 1,000 and 2,000 mg/kg/day for 14 days. Clinical signs and mortality were observed daily, whereas body weight and food consumption were recorded weekly throughout the experiment. At the end of the study, blood was taken from the posterior vena cava for hematology and serum biochemistry. All organs of the body surface, subcutis, head, thoracic cavity, and abdominal cavity were observed grossly. Then, the internal organs were removed and weighed. Results : No death occurred and no significant changes in clinical sign, body weight, food consumption and serum biochemistry parameters were observed in male and female rats over the study period. Although there were some alterations in hematologic and necropsy findings, and organ weights, these changes were not considered toxicologically significant. Conclusions : These results suggest that the 14-day repeated administration of HT042 does not produce any significant oral toxicity at doses of up to 2,000 mg/kg/day in male and female rats under the present experimental conditions.
The purpose of this study is to obtain basic data to be used in social welfare intervention for relieving psychological burdens caused by job stress in the eco-boomer generation that will be the center of Korean society in future, by estimating job stress change trajectories of the eco-boomer generation in the convergence era, figuring out predicting factors and examining job stress factors that individuals experience, in accordance with the degree of job stress and the changes. This is a longitudinal study using secondary data and for analysis, the Latent Growth Model(LGM) was applied to the 1st year to the 7th year Korean Welfare Panel Data. Self-esteem was one of job stress predicting factors of the eco-boomer generation. Since most of eco-boomers were students in the early measurement period, the level of job stress was low, but over time, the burden of job increased by gradation. This study has significance by providing an empirical basis for predicting factors of job stress changes of the eco-boomer generation to understand job stress in the eco-boomer generation.
In the present study, we studied the change patterns of adolescents' overt aggression during the middle school 2nd to the high school 1st grades and the effects of ecological factors on the change. For the research goals, we applied multi-level models to the Korean Youth Panel data. Results showed that adolescents' overt aggression decreased significantly during the period. Gender(males recoded as 1) and self-control had negative effects on the initial status(middle school 2nd grade) while the number of delinquency peers had a positive effect. On the other hand, gender and self-control showed positive effects on the change rate. The major strengths of the research are the study of various ecological factors and the longitudinal design. Few studies of adolescents' aggression have incorporated these methodological and substantive characteristics.
Objective: This study aimed to analyze the effects of computer game exposure on pathological musculoskeletal symptoms in adolescents. Method: This study included 10 male junior high school students who used computers less than 3 times a week for 1 hr per day. The subjects were asked to play computer games for 4 hr. Magnetic resonance imaging of the hand and wrist, from the distal radius and ulnar head to the distal phalanges, and radiography of the cervical vertebrae were performed before and after playing computer games. For each dependent variable, a paired t-test was performed to identify significant changes before and after a 4-hr active computer game (p<.05). Results: The horizontal diameters of the flexor tendons in the index and middle fingers were significantly reduced after playing computer games. The horizontal diameters of the flexor tendons of other fingers did not show any significant differences, but there was a tendency toward a decrease after playing computer games. There was no significant change in the cervical lordosis angle before and after playing computer games. However, the cervical lordosis angle was relatively decreased. Conclusion: The results of this study showed that computer game exposure had direct and indirect effects on morphological changes of flexor tendons. In addition, playing computer games for long periods of time can have a negative effect on normal functioning of the musculoskeletal system, with the possible development of abnormalities. However, computer game exposure in adolescents cannot be decisively identified as a factor causing pathological symptoms, based on the results of this study alone. Thus, longterm longitudinal studies on the overall musculoskeletal system are necessary.
Purpose: The objective of this study was to investigate whether augmented low-dye taping treatment, which consists of low-dye, reverse-six, and calcaneal-sling taping, is effective in alleviating the collapse of the medial longitudinal arch, which is used for physical balancing during one leg standing. Methods: The subjects comprised 27 students in their 20s whose navicular bone height was lowered by 10 mm or more when evaluated using the navicular drop test. Those with interference factors like deformities, fractures, or traumas were excluded. Frequency-division multiplexing was used to measure one leg standing, and the method to avoir the average each time after 3 times of measurement was applied. Results: Significant differences in the center of pressure (COP) path length, COP average velocity, and forefoot force were observed during left leg standing (p<0.05), but for right leg standing, only changes in forefoot force were noted. Conclusion: Based on the changes to the non-dominant leg in terms of COP path length, COP average velocity, and forefoot force, the immediate effect of augmented low-dye taping, which combines three types of anti-pronation taping, on one leg standing balance in people with flat feet was confirmed.
This study was to examine the effects of simulation used additionally in clinical practicum and evaluate its applicability in an undergraduate nursing curriculum. A longitudinal survey was used to measure the changes on the scores of clinical competency, clinical confidence, critical thinking and problem solving ability of students(N=77) who had experienced simulation in the clinical practicum curricula throughout their junior and senior years. Variables were measured 4 times, at the beginning and the end of each year, and data were analyzed using repeated measures of ANOVAs. Clinical competency score in senior year improved significantly(t=-13.75, p<.001) whereas no significant changes in junior year. Clinical confidence and critical thinking disposition over 2 years showed significant increases(F=177.86, p<.001; F=247.79, p<.001, respectively). Problem solving ability increased throughout the junior and senior years, however, it did not make a significant difference at any point of measures.
