  • In this study, sawdust boards with a density 0.6g/$cm^2$, powder phenol resin containing 10% were made from thinned logs of Pinus densiflora, Larix leptolepis and Pinus koraiensis. Four levels of the pressure and press time were designed to investigate the effect on the properties of sawdust boards. Thickness swelling and water absorption were increased as press time was decreased. The condition of 3-stage pressure for lower thickness swelling and water absorption of board was 40$\rightarrow$30$\rightarrow$20kgf/$cm^2$. Bending strength and brinell hardness were decreased as press time was decreased. But there have no change with pressing pressure. These results indicated that properties of sawdust board were affected by press time.

  • Biological control of blue stain fungi, such as Ophiostoma and Leptographium spp., that reduce the quality of logs and cause economic losses in wood product industry, was carried out in laboratory and field trials by a colorless strain of Ophiostoma quercus, BSFcs-1. Inoculation of pine wood chips with the colorless strain 1 wk before inoculating wild-type strain demonstrated that BSFcs-1 colonized wood chips and excluded blue stain fungi from being established. Efficacy of BSFcs-1 was compared with colorless strain of O. piliferum, which is commercially available under the trade name of Cartapip. Inoculation of pine wood logs with the colorless strain 1 wk before inoculating wild-type strain of blue stain in isolated wood chips, while O. quercus and O. floccosum colonized 0% and 17%, respectively. Simultaneous inoculation of logs with the colorless and wild-type strains resulted in decreased colonization (28%) by BSFcs-1, but increased colonization by O. quercus (185) and O. floccosum (29%). On the other hand, BSFcs-1 and wild-type strain alone colonized 75% and 71%, respectively. Treatment of the surface of log ends with mycelial suspension of BSFcs-1 after cutting also showed good control of blue stain fungi in a pine forest stands.

  • The goal of this study was to predict lamina yield from logs of different diameter for production of cross laminated timber. Log characteristics of red pine (Pinus densiflora) and Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica), including diameter, length, volume, and defects were used for statistical and geometrical analyses, along with the lamina characteristics, including width, thickness, and defects. Based on the data obtained, the strong factors influencing the yield and grade of lamina from the two species were statistically evaluated. A geometrical approach was used for analysis of the yield from logs of given diameters. Statistical analysis showed that lamina yield was dependent on target lamina size but the grade of lamina was not related to any of the log characteristics. The suggested yield equations from the geometrical approach indicated an accuracy of less than 20% difference.

  • The investigation was aimed to reduce the period of bed log through the protection of harmful fungi and to know the effects of physiological activating substances on the yield increase of Lentinus edodes. Mycelial growth was evaluated both the bed logs and physiological activating substances, respectively. I percent extract of Allium cepa and malt as a physiological activating substance was highly effective in mycelial growth of Lentinus edodes. Better effects among the bed logs by the application fo physiological activating substances observed in both Quercus serrata and Carpinus laxiflora. This results suggested that supplement of physiological activating substances to the bed log would be beneficial for the production of Lentinus edodes.

  • This paper studies an automatic expansion of dialogue examples using the logs of an example-based dialogue system. Conventional approaches to example-based dialogue system manually construct dialogue examples between humans and a Chatbot, which are labor intensive and time consuming. The proposed method automatically classifies natural utterance pairs and adds them into dialogue example database. Experimental results show that lexical, POS and modality features are useful for classifying natural utterance pairs, and prove that the dialogue examples can be automatically expanded using the logs of a dialogue system.

  • This research investigated the variation of density, the weight loss, dimensional shrinkage and heat conduction by the heating rate and keeping time at maximum temperature of woodceramics, when sawdust boards made from thinned logs of Pinus densiflora, Larix kaemferi and Pinus koraiensis were impregnated with phenol-formaldehyde resin, and then were formed by heating rate ($2^{\circ}C/min{\sim}6^{\circ}C/min$) and keeping time at maximum temperature (1~5 h). As the heating rate increased, the density and thickness shrinkage decreased, but weight loss and linear shrinkage increased. The more the keeping time at maximum temperature, the greater the linear shrinkage and thickness shrinkage. The heating conduction was superior at the heating rate is $2^{\circ}C/min$ and the keeping time at maximum temperature of 2 hs.

  • The characteristics of radio-frequency/vacuum drying Japanese larch boxed heart round logs with 150 mm and 210 mm in diameter and 2,500 mm in length, subjected to compressive loading, after the pretreatment of kerf were investigated. The results of this study were as the follows: The drying time of about 120 hours~130 hours was needed from green to about 15 percent of moisture content. The gradient of final moisture content for all specimens was very gentle in both longitudinal and transverse directions owing to dielectric heating. The surface checks seriously occurred although the occurrence extent of surface check for the kerfed specimens was slight compared with that for the control specimens because drying stress was relieved by kerf. The occurrence of surface checks for the L-specimen was more serious than that for the S-specimen.

  • First half of my article focused on analyzing the current state of historical materials regarding weather and climate, and established a list of weather-related historical literature collection of Korea with which to make a lexical approach to the situations of all kinds of weather literature. It also put emphasis on gathering information and data of weather logs from journal-type historical records which were contained in 48 weather-related journals of Choseon period. The results of this research are expected to be useful for the activation of study in historical meteorology. The latter half of my research focused on analyzing various meteorological states of sunny, cloudy, rainy, snowy and frosty weather which were recorded in the official Annals of King Kojong (1864~1907). And it re-verified historical rainfall data of preceding researches of Wada Yuji (1917), Jung-Lim (1994), Jhun-Moon (1997). In result, different records were found between data of theirs and mine. It means that we have to analyze and reconstruct newly the meteorological data of the Annals of King Gojong and the Daily Records of Royal Sungjungwon (1623~1910) during the late Choseon period.

  • Transaction logs capture the interactions between online information retrieval systems and the users. Given the nature of the Web and Web users, transaction logs appear to be a reasonable and relevant method to collect and investigate information searching behaviors from a large number of Web users. Based on a series of research studies that analyzed Naver transaction logs, this study examines how transaction log analysis can be applied and contributed to the field of web searching and suggests future implications for the web searching field. It is expected that this study could contribute to the development and implementation of more effective Web search systems and services.

  • Memcached, commonly used to speed up the data access in big-data and Internet-web applications, is a system software of the distributed-cache mechanism. But it is subject to the severe challenge of the loss of recently uncommitted updates in the case where the Memcached servers crash due to some reason. Although the replica scheme and the disk-log-based replay mechanism have been proposed to overcome this problem, they generate either the overhead of the replica synchronization or the persistent-storage overhead that is caused by flushing related logs. This paper proposes a scheme of backing up the write requests (i.e., set and add) on the Memcached client side, to reduce the overhead resulting from the making of disk-log records or performing the replica consistency. If the Memcached server fails, a timestamp-based recovery mechanism is then introduced to replay the write requests (buffered by relevant clients), for regaining the lost-data updates on the rebooted Memcached server, thereby meeting the data-consistency requirement. More importantly, compared with the mechanism of logging the write requests to the persistent storage of the master server and the server-replication scheme, the newly proposed approach of backing up the logs on the client side can greatly decrease the time overhead by up to 116.8% when processing the write workloads.
