Modular steel buildings consist of prefabricated room-sized structural units that are manufactured offsite and installed onsite. The inter-module connections must fulfill the assembly construction requirements and soundly transfer the external loads. This work proposes an innovative assembled connection suitable for modular buildings with concrete-filled steel tube columns. The connection uses pretensioned strands and plugin bars to vertically connect the adjacent modular columns. The moment-transferring performance of this inter-module connection was studied through monotonic and cyclic loading tests. The results showed that because of the assembly construction, the connected sections were separated under lateral bending, and the prestressed inter-module connection performed as a weak semirigid connection. The moment strength at the early loading stage originated primarily from the contact bonding mechanism with the infilled concrete, and the postyield strength depended mainly on the tensioned strands. The connection displayed a self-centering-like behavior that the induced deformation was reversed during unloading. The energy dissipation originated primarily from frictional slipping of the plugin bars and steel strands. The moment transferring ability was closely related to the section dimension and the arrangements of the plugin bars and steel strands. A simplified strength calculation and evaluation method was also proposed, and the effectiveness was validated with the test data.
A total stress-based bounding surface model is developed to predict the undrained behaviour of saturated soft clays under cyclic loads based on the anisotropic hardening modulus field and bounding-surface theories. A new hardening rule is developed based on a new interpolation function of the hardening modulus that has simple mathematic expression and fewer model parameters. The evolution of hardening modulus field is described in the deviatoric stress space. It is assumed that the stress reverse points are the mapping centre points and the mapping centre moves with the variation of loading and unloading paths to describe the cyclic stress-strain hysteresis curve. In addition, by introducing a model parameter that reflects the accumulation rate and level of shear strain to the interpolation function, the cyclic shakedown and failure behaviour of soil elements with different combinations of initial and cyclic stresses can be captured. The methods to determine the model parameters using cyclic triaxial compression tests are also studied. Finally, the cyclic triaxial extension and torsional shear tests are performed. By comparing the predictions with the test results, the model can be used to describe undrained cyclic stress-strain responses of elements with different stress states for the tested clays.
The generally accepted idea for carbohydrate translocation in plants is an osmotic pressure flow hypothesis. According to the hypothesis, a high concentration of carbohydrate in the phloem of carbohydrate synthesis regions (source) causes a water influx into the phloem. The generated osmotic potential in the phloem is responsible for long distance carbohydrate transport through the positive hydrostatic pressure. In regions of carbohydrate utilization and storage (sink), translocated carbohydrates are continuously metabolized and compartmentalized, generating a concentration gradient between source and sinks. In this system, carbohydrates load into the phloem (phloem loading) and unload out of the phloem (phloem unloading). Phloem-mobile herbicides that are applied to plants are also translocated from the source to sinks. However, some experimental results reveal that the patterns of phloem translocation between carbohydrates and herbicides are different. The differences are due, in part, to the physico-chemical properties of herbicides and to the absence/presence of specific carrier(s) in the phloem.

This paper presents a nonlinear finite element procedure for the analysis of reinforced and prestressed concrete shells using the four-node quadrilateral flat shell element with drilling rotational stiffness. A layered approach is used to discretize, through the thickness, the behavior of concrete, reinforcing bars and tendons. Using the smeared-crack method, cracked concrete is treated as an orthotropic nonlinear material. The steel reinforcement and tendon are assumed to be in a uni-axial stress state and to be smeared in a layer. The constitutive models, which cover the loading, unloading, and reloading paths, and the developed finite element procedure predicts with reasonable accuracy the behavior of reinforced and prestressed concrete shells subjected to different types of loading. The proposed numerical method fur nonlinear analysis of reinforced and prestressed concrete shells is verified by comparison with reliable experimental results.
The longitudinal axial strain in the plastic hinge region of reinforced concrete (RC) columns influences on the structural behavior of RC structures subjected to reversed cyclic loading. This strain decreases the effective compressive strength of concrete and increases the lateral displacements between stories by causing the elongation of member length. This paper investigated the effects of the axial force on the elongation of a RC member by using a sectional analysis of RC members. The analytical and experimental results indicated that the axial force decreased the axial strain in the plastic hinge region of RC columns. In this study, a model was proposed to predict the axial strain of RC columns. The proposed model considering the effects of axial force ratio consisted of three path types ; Path 1-loading region, Path 2-unloading region, and Path 3-reversing cyclic loading region. The axal strains predicted by the proposed model were compared with the test results of RC columns with various axial force ratios, and agreed reasonably with the observed longitudinal strains.

Since the dimension of cold forged part is larger than the cavity size of forging die, the difference results from the various features, such as, the elastic characteristics of die and workpiece, thermal influences, and machine-elasticity. All of these factors should be considered to get more accurate prediction of the dimension of forged part. In this paper, severe FE techniques are proposed to improve the prediction accuracy of dimension for cold forged part. To validate the importance of the above mentioned factors, and the estimated results are compared with the experimental results. The used model is a closed die upsetting of cylindrical billet. The calculated dimensions are well coincided with .the measured values based on the proposed techniques. The proposed techniques have put two simple but important points into Fe simulation. One is the separation of forging stages into 3 steps, from a loading through punch retraction to ejecting stage. The other is the dimensional change, according to the temperature changes due to the deformation. The FE analysis could predict the dimension of cold forged part within the $10{\mu}m$, based on the more realistic consideration.

Two kinds of 16bit-personal computer-based fatigue testing automation and monitoring system were constructed; one is Single-System utilizing a personal computer, the other si Dual-System consisting of two personal computers. The system developed in this study permits to perform multi-step programmed loading and pseudo-random loading fatigue tests, three parameters such as load, total displacement and subtracted displacement can be measured simultaneously. For improvements in measurements of fatigue behavior, two kinds of signal noise reduction software was developed. In addition, a software was also designed to automatically measure the crack opening point and crack length using the unloading elastic compliance technique.
This research examined an immediate loading capable of providing a masticatory function and financial affordability while satisfying every requirement of a useful immediate loading. In this research, numerical value analysis was performed on couple-type posterior teeth implants developed by making up for the problems of extant implants. As a result of examining the effects of external impacts on extant implants and their deformation, relatively lager deformations separated from a molar were found concerning molar deformation implant with the maximum deformation level being approximately 1.657mm. In this research, the improved implant showed much improvement in terms of impact analysis in its deformation dispersion status after unloading the impulsive load from a punch. As for the case of hepf, about 1.657mm occurred but the improved model showed about 0.9217mm, exhibiting 55.6% advancement.
Delayed hydride cracking (DHC) was first observed in pressure tubes in Canadian CANDU reactors. In light water reactors, DHC was not observed until the late 1990s in high-burnup boiling water reactor (BWR) fuel cladding. In recent years, the focus on DHC has resurfaced in light of the increased interest in the cladding integrity during interim conditions. In principle, all spent fuel in the wet pools has sufficient hydrogen content for DHC to operate below $300^{\circ}C$. It is therefore of importance to establish the critical parameters for DHC to operate. This work studies the threshold stress intensity factor ($K_{IH}$) to initiate DHC as a function of temperature in Zry-4 for temperatures between $227^{\circ}C$ and $315^{\circ}C$. The experimental technique used in this study was the pin-loading testing technique. To determine the $K_{IH}$, an unloading method was used where the load was successively reduced in a stepwise manner until no cracking was observed during 24 hours. The results showed that there was moderate temperature behavior at lower temperatures. Around $300^{\circ}C$, there was a sharp increase in $K_{IH}$ indicating the upper temperature limit for DHC. The value for $K_{IH}$ at $227^{\circ}C$ was determined to be $2.6{\pm}0.3MPa$${\surd}$m.
A series of drained triaxial testis was performed on a Band by use of cubical triaxial apparatus, in which three principal stresses could be applied independently. The stress -strain behavior on the same stress path with cubical triaxial test was analyzed with application of the isotropic single hardening constitutive model presented by Lade. The behavior predicted by the constitutive model presented good coincidence with experimental results during poi mary loading. However, the predicted Mo윤ding and reloading behavior wan much different from results of cubical triaxial testy. That is, the softening part of the prediction might result in a rough approximation, since the plastic work parameters of single hardening model were based on the hardening portion of the data.
