  • In this study we simulate the fatigue test of a compact tension specimen and obtain the displacements, stresses and strains by using the finite element method. And we examine the path independency of $\Delta$J integral values and compare it with $\Delta$J integral values calculated from load-load line displacement curve. From the results of this study, we can find that $\Delta$J integral show the path Independency for saturated materials. We can also find that the path independency of $\Delta$J Is not satisfied when different material Is assumed near the crack tip, but the difference in $\Delta$J is small. And $\Delta$J integral values calculated from load-load line displacement is very analogous with those from integration path but always have lower values than those from integration paths. In the case of crack closing, we found that $\Delta$J integral values from load-load line displacement should be calculated with the load Increment values based on the crack opening point. The unsaturated material is also simulated and its $\Delta$J shows different values according to the path, but the difference is small.

  • In general, a drilled shaft embedded in weathered rock has a large load bearing capacity. Therefore, most of the load tests are performed only up to the load level that confirms the pile design load capacity, and stopped much before the ultimate load of the pile is attained. If a reliable ultimate load value can be extracted from the premature load test data, it will be possible to greatly improve economic efficiency as well as pile design quality. The main purpose of this study is to propose a method for judging the reliability of the ultimate load of piles that is obtained from extrapolated load test data. To this aim, ten static load test data of load-displacement curves were obtained from testing of piles to their failures from 3 different field sites. For each load-displacement curve, loading was assumed as 25%, 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, and 90% of the actual pile bearing capacity. The limited known data were then extrapolated using the hyperbolic function, and the ultimate capacity was re-determined for each extrapolated data by the Davisson method (1972). Statistical analysis was performed on the reliability of the re-evaluated ultimate loads. The results showed that if the ratio of the maximum-available displacement to the predicted displacement exceeds 0.6, the extrapolated ultimate load may be regarded as reliable, having less than a conservative 20% error on average. The applicability of the proposed method of judgment was also verified with static load test data of driven piles.

  • In this study, We examine closely the capacity spectrum method which a kind of displacement-based method evaluated by displacement of structure as an alternative to the load-based analysis method. The displacement-based method can easily review the strength of structure, seismic performance, ductility. Seismic performance by using capacity spectrum method is divided into design response spectrum and capacity spectrum. We can diagram design response spectrum by deciding the design seismic factor depending on performance target, site classification, seismic level, return period as UBC-97. Capacity spectrum is a load-displacement curve obtained by Push-over analysis considering the geometric parameter and the material parameter. We execute the seismic performance evaluation by using the capacity spectrum method to reinforced concrete pier which has been seismic design. As a result, We confirmed that there is a yield point and a ultimate point close by design response spectrum of UBC-97.

  • Architectural membrane are now used in the roof of large span structures throughout the world with the merits of free shape and lightness. Some membrane have some problems of structural capacity by the wind or snow load conditions, large span structures was shown to the tearing of the membrane. This paper is the experimental test on the stress strain curve of cycling load for the glass fiber membrane. In the result of stress strain relationship curve by the cycling load, glass fiber membrane was reduced the tensile strength, the polyester membrane was shown to occur the increase of displacement without load reduction in each load step.

  • In order to evaluate seismic performance of multi-degree-of-freedom bridge structure, moderate lateral load distribution methods using the pushover analysis were developed by many researchers. One of important variables to improve an accuracy of pushover analysis is lateral load distribution. In this study, pushover analyses were performed using the five types of lateral load distribution and seismic performances were evaluated by capacity spectrum method (CSM). To verify an accuracy of suggested lateral load distribution, the maximum displacement estimates by the CSM were compared to those by inelastic time history analysis.

  • Pullout tests are usually employed to determine the ultimate bearing capacity of reinforced soil, and the load-displacement curve can be obtained easily. This paper presents an analytical solution for predicting the full-range mechanical behavior of a buried planar reinforcement subjected to pullout based on a bi-linear bond-slip model. The full-range behavior consists of three consecutive stages: elastic stage, elastic-plastic stage and debonding stage. For each stage, closed-form solutions for the load-displacement relationship, the interfacial slip distribution, the interfacial shear stress distribution and the axial stress distribution along the planar reinforcement were derived. The ultimate load and the effective bond length were also obtained. Then the analytical model was calibrated and validated against three pullout experimental tests. The predicted load-displacement curves as well as the internal displacement distribution are in closed agreement with test results. Moreover, a parametric study on the effect of anchorage length, reinforcement axial stiffness, interfacial shear stiffness and interfacial shear strength is also presented, providing insights into the pullout behaviour of planar reinforcements of MSE structures.

  • The tip geometries of the pyramidal and conical indenters used for micro/nano-indentation tests are not sharp. They are inevitably rounded because of their manufacturability and wear. In many indentation studies, the tip geometries of the pyramidal indenters are simply assumed to be spherical, and the theoretical solution for spherical indentation is simply applied to the geometry at a shallow indentation depth. This assumption, however, has two problems. First, the accuracy of the theoretical solution depends on the material properties and indenter shape. Second, the actual shapes of pyramidal indenter tips are not perfectly spherical. Hence, we consider the effects of these two problems on indentation tests via finite element analysis. We first show the relationship between the Poisson's ratio and load-displacement curve for spherical indentation, and suggest improved solutions. Then, using a possible geometry for a Berkovich indenter tip, we analyze the characteristics of the load-displacement curve with respect to the indentation depth.

  • This study was designed to investigate the mechanical properties of the coating layer on electronic galvanized sheet steel as a part of the ongoing research on the coated steel. Those properties were determined using nano-indentation, the finite element method, and artificial neural networks. First and foremost, the load-displacement curve (the loading-unloading curve) of coatings was derived from a nano-indentation test by CSM (continuous stiffness measurement) and was used to measure the elastic modulus and hardness of the coating layer. The properties derived were applied in FE simulations of a nano-indentation test, and the analytical results were compared with the experimental result. A numerical model for FE simulations was established for the coating layer and the substrate separately. Finally, to determine the mechanical properties of the coating, such as the stress-strain curve, functional equations of loading and unloading curves were introduced and computed using the neural networks method. The results show errors within $5\%$ in comparison with the load-displacement measured by a nano-indentation test.

  • This paper has proposed a reinforcing method for damaged RC columns with SRF sheets and Aramid rods. In order to verify the effectiveness and performance, two original columns and two reinforced columns with SRF sheets and Aramid rods were developed and tested under lateral cyclic displacement and a constant axial load. The test showed that the improvement of energy dissipation capacity was increased in terms of strength and ductility. In addition, an analytical modeling of the standard specimens was proposed using Response-2000 and ZeusNL program. The results of analytical and experimental studies for two standard columns were compared in terms of loading-displacement curve and energy dissipation capacity based on the nonlinear static analysis.

  • Laminated rubber bearings are widely used as a key component in seismic isolation of structural systems subjected to earthquake loadings. The combination of rubber layers and reinforcing steel shims makes the bearings conditionally unstable similar to buckling of ordinary columns. The shear flexibility of these short columns can lead to relatively low buckling Toads which may be further reduced when high shear strains are simultaneously imposed As an analytical approach, the area reduction formula has been proposed to account for the reduction in buckling load due to shear, but the degree of conservatism is unknown. In order to complement analytical approaches, a non-linear finite element analysis can be used. In this paper, a numerical study which aims at determining the effect of high shear strain on the critical load of elastomeric bearings is presented. From the load-displacement curve at each specified shear displacement, the buckling load can be obtained using the Southwell procedures. The results obtained are then compared against the theoretical predictions in order to examine the validity and the conservatism of the theoretical formulas.
