  • The problem of optimal stochastic GA control of the system with uncertain parameters and unsure noise covariates is studied. First, without knowing the explicit form of the dynamic system, the open-loop determinism problem with path optimization is solved. Next, Gaussian linear quadratic controllers (LQG) are designed for linear systems that depend on the nominal path. A robust genetic neural network (NN) fuzzy controller is synthesized, which consists of a Kalman filter and an optimal controller to assure the asymptotic stability of the discrete control system. A simulation is performed to prove the suitability and performance of the recommended algorithm. The results indicated that the recommended method is a feasible method to improve the performance of active tuned mass damper (ATMD) shear buildings under random earthquake disturbances.

  • An alternative optimal control law formulation is introduced and compared with two different control law, a conventional linear quadratic regulator and the control law based on game theory. This formulation eliminates the undesired modes of the system by the projection of a controller onto the subspace orthogonal to that of the bad modes. In conventional LQR control law, the control performance can be improved only by using proper weighting matrices in performance index, normally, with high cost. The control law formulation by game theory may provide various ways to obtain the desired performance. The control law modified by the elimination of bad modes provides efficient ways to get rid of an undesired performance since it eliminates the exact modes which cause the bad control performance.

  • This paper presents a new control approach for designing a coordinated controller for static VAR compensator system. A SVC constructed by a Fixed Capacitor and a Thyristor Controlled Reactor is designed and implemented to improve the damping of a synchronous generator, as well as controlling the system voltage. A design of linear quadratic controller based on optimal controller depends on choosing weighting matrices. A coordinated optimal controller is achieved by minimizing a quadratic performance index using dynamic programming techniques. The selection of weighting matrices is usually carried out by trial and error which is not a trivial problem. We proposed a efficient method using GA of finding weighting matrices for optimal control law. Thus, we prove the usefulness of proposed method to improve the stability of single machine-infinite bus with SVC system.

  • The present paper describes the vibration control experiment of composite plates with bonded piezoelectric sensor and actuator. The system is modeled as two degree-of-freedom system using modal coordinates and the system parameters are obtained from vibration tests. Kalman filter is adopted for extracting modal coordinates from sensor signal, and control algorithms applied to the system are Linear Quadratic Gaussian(LQG) control, Bang-Bang Control (BBC), Negative Velocity Feedback(NVF), Proportional Derivative Control(PDC). From observation of the spillover and control perfomance, it is concluded that a higher order control algorithm such as LQG rather than BBG, NVF, PDC is suitable for efficient simultaneous control of both bending and twisting modes of composite plates.

  • In this paper, a robust optimization approach is applied to the two-axes stage using a piezoelectric actuator for precise motion tracking. Robust control is based on LQG/LTR (linear quadratic Gaussian control with loop transfer recovery) control. Further, an LMI (linear matrix inequality) is used to find the optimal parameter in the loop transfer recovery step, instead of a trial and error method. A decoupler in the shape of FIR filter is added to reduce the coupling effect between the motions of the two axes, and hence, the feedback control loop is designed independently for each axis motion. The experimental result shows that the proposed control scheme can be applied effectively for motion control of the two-axes stage.

  • This paper presents a motion planning algorithm for conveyor tracking. We formulate the problem as the linear quadratic tracking problem in optimal control theory and solve it through dynamic programming. In the proposed algorithm, the steady-state tracking error is eliminated completely, and the joint torque, velocity, acceleration, and jerks are considered as some constraints. Numerical examples are then presented to demonstrate the utility of the proposed motion planning algorithm.

  • This paper treats with the sub-optimal control problem of noninear systems by approximation method. This method involves the approximation by linearization which provides the sub-optimal solution of non-linear control problems. The result of this work shows that, in the problem in which the controlled plant is characterized by an ordinary differential equation of first order, the solution obtained by this method coincides with the exact solution of problem. In of case of the second or higher order systems, it is proved analytically that this method of linearization produces the sub-optimal solution of the given problem. It is also shown that the sub-optimality of solution by the method can be evaluated by introducing the upper and lower bounded performance indices. Discussion is made on the procedure with some illustrative examples whose performance indices are given in the quadratic forms.

  • This paper considers the optimal control problem in real-time control systems with random time-delays. It proposes an algorithm which uses the linear quadratic (LQ) control method and a dedicated technique to compensate for the time-delay effects. Since it is assumed that the time-delays are unknown but the probability distribution of the delays are known a priori, the algorithm considers the mean value of the time-delays as a nominal value for random delay compensation. An example is given to show the performance of the proposed algorithm, where an inverted pendulum system is controlled over a controller-area network (CAN). Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm provides good performance results. It is shown that our algorithm is comparable to existing algorithms in both computation cost and performance.

  • This paper deals with an optimal output tracking control for open-cycle liquid propellant rocket engine. For this purpose, we modeled simplified mathematical model of open-cycle liquid propellant rocket engine and designed optimal output feedback control system using combustion chamber pressure. For design the closed-loop system of open-cycle liquid propellant rocket engine, we designed optimal output feedback linear quadratic tracking control system using the linearized model and demonstrated the performance of the controller through numerical simulation.

  • In this paper, we investigate the error estimates of a quadratic elliptic control problem with pointwise control constraints. The state and the co-state variables are approximated by the order k = 1 Raviart-Thomas mixed finite element and the control variable is discretized by piecewise linear but discontinuous functions. Approximations of order $h^{\frac{3}{2}}$ in the $L^2$-norm and order h in the $L^{\infty}$-norm for the control variable are proved.
