  • The main purposes of this article are to introduce the theoretical backgrounds and empirical application methods of two different Models for the function of expenditure, and to compare the goodness-o(-fit of the two models: a single-equation model and a complete-system-of-demand-equation model. For the empirical analysis of the single-equation model, a linear formula and a double-leg formula were employed. In order to test the complete-system-of-demand-equation model empirically, the \"Linear Approximation/Almost Ideal Demand System (LA/AIDS)" was used. The independent variables were the total living expense and expenditure categories Price index. The data used in this study were obtained from the quarterly statistics of "The Annual Report on the Urban Family Income and Expenditure Survey (Dosigagyeyonbo)" and "The Annual Report on the Consumer Price Index (Sobijamulgajaryo)," for the years 1994 to 1997. The goodness-of-fit (R-square) was higher with the complete-system-of-demand-equation model than with the single-equation model for the budget share on food (excluding eating-out expenses) and for the share on cultural and recreational activities. However, there was no difference between the two models in terms of the proportion of the expenditure on automobile fuel.fuel.

  • In this paper, we present an efficient numerical method for multiphase image segmentation using a multiphase-field model. The method combines the vector-valued Allen-Cahn phase-field equation with initial data fitting terms containing prescribed interface width and fidelity constants. An efficient numerical solution is achieved using the recently developed hybrid operator splitting method for the vector-valued Allen-Cahn phase-field equation. We split the modified vector-valued Allen-Cahn equation into a nonlinear equation and a linear diffusion equation with a source term. The linear diffusion equation is discretized using an implicit scheme and the resulting implicit discrete system of equations is solved by a multigrid method. The nonlinear equation is solved semi-analytically using a closed-form solution. And by treating the source term of the linear diffusion equation explicitly, we solve the modified vector-valued Allen-Cahn equation in a decoupled way. By decoupling the governing equation, we can speed up the segmentation process with multiple phases. We perform some characteristic numerical experiments for multiphase image segmentation.

  • The energy cost is resulted from the energy use. Its sources are divided into some types and depended on the building use or energy-use type. The energy cost should be affected by the amount of the energy use. The cost could be calculated to consider various factors such as the insulation, heating type, building shape and others. But it can not consider all of the affect factors to the energy cost and need to categorize the factors to the condition for estimating the cost. In this paper, it aimed at providing the estimation model in linear equation and multiple linear regression, utilizing the building exterior condition and management characteristics in apartment housing. Its survey are conducted in two parts of management characteristics and building exterior condition. The correlation analysis is conducted to get rid of the multicolinearity among the inputted factors. The number of linear equation model is 11 and includes the 1st, 2nd and 3rd equation function, power function and others. Among these, it suggested the 2nd and 3rd function and power function in terms of the statistics. In multiple linear regression model, the building volume and management area are inputted to the estimation.

  • Most hydro]ogic phenomena are the complex and organic products of multiple causations like climatic and hydro-geological factors. A certain significant correlation on the run-off in river basin would be expected and foreseen in advance, and the effect of each these causual and associated factors (independant variables; present-month rainfall, previous-month run-off, evapotranspiration and relative humidity etc.) upon present-month run-off(dependent variable) may be determined by multiple regression analysis. Functions between independant and dependant variables should be treated repeatedly until satisfactory and optimal combination of independant variables can be obtained. Reliability of the estimated function should be tested according to the result of statistical criterion such as analysis of variance, coefficient of determination and significance-test of regression coefficients before first estimated multiple regression model in historical sequence is determined. But some error between observed and estimated run-off is still there. The error arises because the model used is an inadequate description of the system and because the data constituting the record represent only a sample from a population of monthly discharge observation, so that estimates of model parameter will be subject to sampling errors. Since this error which is a deviation from multiple regression plane cannot be explained by first estimated multiple regression equation, it can be considered as a random error governed by law of chance in nature. This unexplained variance by multiple regression equation can be solved by stochastic approach, that is, random error can be stochastically simulated by multiplying random normal variate to standard error of estimate. Finally hybrid model on estimation of monthly run-off in nonhistorical sequence can be determined by combining the determistic component of multiple regression equation and the stochastic component of random errors. Monthly run-off in Naju station in Yong-San river basin is estimated by multiple regression model and hybrid model. And some comparisons between observed and estimated run-off and between multiple regression model and already-existing estimation methods such as Gajiyama formula, tank model and Thomas-Fiering model are done. The results are as follows. (1) The optimal function to estimate monthly run-off in historical sequence is multiple linear regression equation in overall-month unit, that is; Qn=0.788Pn+0.130Qn-1-0.273En-0.1 About 85% of total variance of monthly runoff can be explained by multiple linear regression equation and its coefficient of determination (R2) is 0.843. This means we can estimate monthly runoff in historical sequence highly significantly with short data of observation by above mentioned equation. (2) The optimal function to estimate monthly runoff in nonhistorical sequence is hybrid model combined with multiple linear regression equation in overall-month unit and stochastic component, that is; Qn=0. 788Pn+0. l30Qn-1-0. 273En-0. 10+Sy.t The rest 15% of unexplained variance of monthly runoff can be explained by addition of stochastic process and a bit more reliable results of statistical characteristics of monthly runoff in non-historical sequence are derived. This estimated monthly runoff in non-historical sequence shows up the extraordinary value (maximum, minimum value) which is not appeared in the observed runoff as a random component. (3) "Frequency best fit coefficient" (R2f) of multiple linear regression equation is 0.847 which is the same value as Gaijyama's one. This implies that multiple linear regression equation and Gajiyama formula are theoretically rather reasonable functions.

  • Methods for the estimation of the coefficient matrices in the equation of motion for a linear multi-degree-of-freedom structure arc studied. For this purpose, the equation of motion is transformed into an auto-regressive and moving average with auxiliary input (ARMAX) model. The ARMAX parameters are evaluated using several methods of parameter estimation; such as toe least squares, the instrumental variable, the maximum likelihood and the limited Information maximum likelihood methods. Then the parameters of the equation of motion are recovered therefrom. Numerical example is given for a 3-story building model subjected to an earthquake exitation.

  • In this paper, the extended Biot's semilinear model was developed. Combining the extended Biot model with the dynamic equation yields the nonlinear wave equation in poproelastic sound absorbing materials. Both perturbation and matching techniques are used to find solutions for nonlinear wave equations. By comparing results between linear and nonlinear wave solutions, characteristics of nonlinear waves in poroelastic sound abosrbing materials have been studied. Nonlinear waves were found to be attenuated faster than the linear ones. A maximum amplitude of the nonlinear wave occurred near its surface boundaries and decay quickly with distance from the surface. It has also been found that, if the amplitudes of linear waves are known at the surface boundaries, those of nonlinear ones can be determined. This will be the basis of finding effects of nonlinearity on the absorption coefficient and the transmission loss.

  • A General Pipe Break Prediction Model that incorporates linear and exponential models in its form is developed. The model is capable of fitting pipe break trends that have linear, exponential or in between of linear and exponential trend by using a weighting factor. The weighting factor is adjusted to obtain a best model that minimizes the sum of squared errors of the model. The model essentially plots a best curve (or a line) passing through "cumulative number of pipe breaks" versus "break times since installation of a pipe" data points. Therefore, it prevents over-predicting future number of pipe breaks compared to the conventional exponential model. The optimal replacement time equation is derived by using the Threshold Break Rate equation by Loganathan et al. (2002).

  • Three kinds of viscoelastic damper model, which has a non-linear spring as an element is studied analytically and numerically. The behavior of the damper model shows non-linear hysteresis curves which is qualitatively similar to those of real viscoelastic materials. The motion is governed by a non-linear constitutive equation and an additional equation of motion. Harmonic balance method is applied to get analytic solutions of the system. The frequency-response curves show that multiple solutions co-exist and that the jump phenomena can occur. In addition, it is shown that separate solution branch exists and that it can merge with the primary response curve. Saddle-node bifurcation sets explain the occurrences of such non-linear phenomena.

  • In this study, the vibration of an electrostatically actuated micro cantilever beam is analyzed in which a viscoelastic layer covers a portion of the micro beam length. This proposed model is considered as the main element of mass and pollutant micro sensors. The nonlinear motion equation is extracted by means of Hamilton principle, considering nonlinear shortening effect for Euler-Bernoulli beam. The non-linear effects of electrostatic excitation, geometry and inertia have been taken into account. The viscoelastic model is assumed as Kelvin-Voigt model. The motion equation is discretized by Galerkin approach. The linear free vibration mode shapes of non-uniform micro beam i.e. the linear mode shape of the system by considering the geometric and inertia effects of viscoelastic layer, have been employed as comparison function in the process of the motion equation discretization. The discretized equation of motion is solved by the use of multiple scale method of perturbation theory and the results are compared with the results of numerical Runge-Kutta approach. The frequency response variations for different lengths and thicknesses of the viscoelastic layer have been founded. The results indicate that if a constant volume of viscoelastic layer is to be deposited on the micro beam for mass or gas sensor applications, then a modified configuration may be found by using the analysis of this paper.
