Finite element analysis is peformed about the crack propagation in half-space due to sliding contact. The analysis is based on linear elastic fracture mechanics and stress intensity factor concept. The crack location is fixed and the friction coefficient between asperity and half-space is varied to analyze the effect of surface friction on stress Intensity factor for horizontal crack. The crack propagation direction is predicted based on the maximum range of shear and tensile stress intensity factor.
A new finite element technology based on p-version of F.E.M. is discussed with reference to its potential for application to stress intensity factor computations. In linear elastic fracture mechanics, especially cracked cylindrical shells. It is shown that the p-version nutlet is far better suited for computing the stress intensity factors than the conventional h-version models with the help of three test problems. The main advantage of this technology is that the accuracy of approximation can be established without mesh refinement or the use of special procedures.
This paper treats the failure analysis of prestressing steel wires with different kinds of localised damage in the form of a surface defect (crack or notch) or as a mechanical action (transverse loads). From the microscopical point of view, the micromechanisms of fracture are shear dimples (associated with localised plasticity) in the case of the transverse loads and cleavage-like (related to a weakest-link fracture micromechanism) in the case of cracked wires. In the notched geometries the microscopic modes of fracture range from the ductile micro-void coalescence to the brittle cleavage, depending on the stress triaxiality in the vicinity of the notch tip. From the macroscopical point of view, fracture criteria are proposed as design criteria in damage tolerance analyses. The transverse load situation is solved by using an upper bound theorem of limit analysis in plasticity. The case of the cracked wire may be treated using fracture criteria in the framework of linear elastic fracture mechanics on the basis of a previous finite element computation of the stress intensity factor in the cracked cylinder. Notched geometries require the use of elastic-plastic fracture mechanics and numerical analysis of the stress-strain state at the failure situation. A fracture criterion is formulated on the basis of the critical value of the effective or equivalent stress in the Von Mises sense.
The static tensile tests of GFRP, ID300, CFRID300 and CFRPEEK were made on the plain and notched specimens at room temperature. The results were discussed based on linear notch mechanics which was proposed by H.Nistani. The fracture of notched GFRP, ID300, CFRID300 and CFRPEEK specimens is controlled by the elastic maximum stress, $({\sigma}_max)$, and the notch root racius,$\rho$, alone, independently of the other geometrical conditions. The relation between fracture nominal stress,$({\sigma}_max)$, and stress concentration factor, $K_t$ and a part where $({\sigma}_c)$ is nearly constant independent of $K_t$. A similar phenomenon can be seen in the fatigue tests of notched specimes under rotating bending or push-pull. The almost constant $({\sigma}_c)$ values correspond to the nearly constant apparent stress intensity factor, $K_{1pc}$ values, obtained by assuming ,$\rho$=0. This can be attributed to the existence of the stable crack. Linear notch mechanics is very useful for analyzing the static tensile fracture behavior of notched GFRP, ID300, CFRPEEK specimens.
Strain localization is important phenomenon since it governs the total behavior or ultimate loads in various kinds of engineering problems. Establishment of an analysis method for strain localization phenomena is also of great concern for expansion of fracture mechanics of concrete. Inside zone of localization, a decrese in stress is accompanied by an increse in strain; outside the strain decreses. All deformation localization phenomenon cannot be predicted by both the classical stress-strain formulation and the linear elastic fracture mechanics. In this paper, a simple one dimensional model including localized deformation zone is studied under compressive and tensile loading. When the model is loaded. localization is assumed to occur uniformly in a finite region and material outside the localization zone is modelled as elastic unloading occurs. Size effects of effective elastic moduli under compression and tension in localization zone are examined.
In this paper, we introduce various coarse-grained elastic network modeling (ENM) techniques as a novel computational method for simulating atomic scale dynamics in macromolecules including DNA, RNA, protein, and polymer. In ENM, a system is modeled as a spring network among representative atoms in which each linear elastic spring is well designed to replace both bonded and nonbonded interactions among atoms in the sense of quantum mechanics. Based on this simplified system, a harmonic Hookean potential is defined and used for not only calculating intrinsic vibration modes of a given system, but also predicting its anharmonic conformational change, both of which are strongly related with its functional features. Various nano and bio applications of ENM such as fracture mechanics of nanocomposite and protein dynamics show that ENM is one of promising tools for simulating atomic scale dynamics in a more effective and efficient way comparing to the traditional molecular dynamics simulation.
The objective of this study is to examine the fracture characteristics of concrete at early ages such as critical stress intensity factor, critical crack-tip opening displacement, fracture energy based on the concepts of the effective-elastic crack model and the cohesive crack model. A wedge splitting test for Mode I was performed on cubic wedge specimens with a notch at the edge. By varying strength and age, load-crack mouth opening displacement curves were obtained and the results were analyzed by linear elastic fracture mechanics. The results from the test and analysis showed that critical stress intensity factor and fracture energy increased, and critical crack-tip opening displacement decreased with concrete age from 1 day to 28 days. The obtained fracture parameters at early ages may be used as a fracture criterion and an input data for finite element analysis of concrete at early ages.
Analytical investigations were performed of a longitudinal crack representing a cylindrical surface in circular shafts loaded in torsion with taking into account the non-linear material behavior. Both functionally graded and multilayered shafts were analyzed. It was assumed that the material is functionally graded in radial direction. The mechanical behavior of shafts was modeled by using non-linear constitutive relations between the shear stresses and shear strains. The fracture was studied in terms of the strain energy release rate. Within the framework of small strain approach, the strain energy release rate was derived in a function of the torsion moments in the cross-sections ahead and behind the crack front. The analytical approach developed was applied to study the fracture in a clamped circular shaft. In order to verify the solution derived, the strain energy release rate was determined also by considering the shaft complimentary strain energy. The effects were evaluated of material properties, crack location and material non-linearity on the fracture behavior. The results obtained can be applied for optimization of the shafts structure with respect to the fracture performance. It was shown that the approach developed in the present paper is very useful for studying the longitudinal fracture in circular shafts in torsion with considering the material non-linearity.
In order to consider the concept of the fitness for purpose'in fatigue design of offshore structure, fracture mechanics is applied to evaluate initial or weld defects. Generally, linear elastic fracture mechanics has been applied to tstimate initial fatigue crack propagation rate as well as long fatigue crack propagation rate. But, initial fatigue crack propagation rate in elasto-plastic notch field may not be characterized by application of stress intensity factor range .DELTA. K, because plastic effect due to stress concentration of notch may contribute to initial crack propagation. Therefore, to introduce the plastic effect into fatigue crack driving force, in this studty, the evaluating method of J-integral range .DELTA. J, was developed by willson was modified for application to notch field. In calculation of .DELTA. J obtained from the modified J-integral, stress gradient and crack closure behavior in the notch field were considered. The initial crack propagation rates in the notch fields of mild steels and high tensile strength steels were correlated to .DELTA. J. As the result, it was cleared that the present .DELTA. J is applicable to charachterize the fatigue crack propagation rates in both the elastic and elasto-plastic notch fields.
Finite element analysis (FEA) combined with the concepts of linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) provides a practical and convenient means to study the fracture and crack growth of materials. In this paper, a numerical modeling of crack propagation in the cement mantle of the reconstructed acetabulum is presented. This work is based on the implementation of the displacement extrapolation method (DEM) and the strain energy density (SED) theory in a finite element code. At each crack increment length, the kinking angle is evaluated as a function of stress intensity factors (SIFs). In this paper, we analyzed the mechanical behavior of cracks initiated in the cement mantle by evaluating the SIFs. The effect of the defect on the crack propagation path was highlighted.
