A Study on Evacuation Safety of Trainingship HANBADA using FDS & maritimeEXODUS

  • In this study, it was simulated and analyzed the evacuation safety to identify the cadets' evacuation time by using maritimeEXODUS which is applied IMO MSC.1/Circ.1238 theory as well as the trim and heel which are the major factor of reducing the ship evacuation speed. In addition, this study carried out a simulation through the special program for fire analysis - FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator) in order to find the effective evacuation time, i.e. life survival time. Particularly, this study did comparative analysis of the influence on the survival of cadets based on the collected simulation data by fire size and sort. As a result of the analysis, It was analyzed the Evacuation Allowable Limit Temperature $60^{\circ}C$ and resulted that there is no influence in evacuation by temperature. As a result of the analysis on visibility evacuation limit 5 m, it was found that the only one evacuation rallying point could not meet the evacuation safety. However, it derived the perfect evacuation safety under the condition of two rallying points available on wood fire. In case of Kerosene, it was satisfied the evacuation safety if the heeling was under $10^{\circ}$. Moreover, it could not meet the evacuation safety by evacuating through upper deck although there were two evacuation rallying points. When it was set by the lifeboat descending maximum angle-$20^{\circ}heel$ and $10^{\circ}trim$ which was described in SOLAS regulation, it was simulated that the wood fire having two evacuation rallying points in the center of the ship satisfied the evacuation safety.

  • The definition of cycle time is the time from the wafer start to the wafer output. It usually takes one or two months to get the product since customer decides to produce it. The cycle time is a critical factor for customer satisfaction because it represents the response time to the market. Long cycle time reflects the ineffective investment for the capital. The cycle time is very important for foundry because long cycle time will cause customer unsatisfied and the order loss. Consequently, all of the foundries put lots of human source in the cycle time improvement. Usually, we make decisions based on the experience in the cycle time management. We have no mechanism or theory for cycle time management. We do work-in-process (WIP) management based on turn rate and standard WIP (STD WIP) set by experiences. But the experience didn't mean the optimal solution, when the situation changed, the cycle time or the standard WIP will also be changed. The experience will not always be applicable. If we only have the experience and no mechanism, management will not be work out. After interview several foundry fab managers, all of the fab can't reflect the situation. That is, all of them will have an impact period after product mix or utilization varied. In this study, we want to develop a formula for standard WIP and use statistical process control (SPC) concept to set WIP upper/lower limit level. When WIP exceed the limit level, it will trigger action plans to compensate WIP Profile. If WIP Profile balances, we don't need too much WIP. So WIP level could be reduced and cycle time also could be reduced.

A Theory of Nonlinear Grinding Chatter Due to Loss of Contact between Grinding Wheel and Workpiece (接觸 離脫 現象 에 의한 非線型 硏削 채터의 解析 理論)

  • It is clear that when the amplitude of grinding chatter increases enough the contact between grinding wheel and workpiece cannot be sustained and the loss of contact occurs during a period of grinding chatter. In this paper the behavior of nonlinear grinding chatter due to the loss of contact has been studied. A nonlinear grinding chatter loop is developed where the loss of contact is considered as a nonlinear element of asymmetrical gain. The analysis is carried out in the time domain by numerical simulation and also in the complex domain by use of describing function method. The results show that two typical patterns of nonlinear grinding chatter can originate from the nonlinearity. One is an irregular chatter frequency at starting stage decreases to the natural frequency of grinding structure while the chatter amplitude increases and decreases repeatedly. The other is a limit cycle chatter of which the amplitude and frequency converge to constant and remain. This nonlinear behavior of grinding chatter has been well analyzed by the describing function method and confirmed by the numerical simulation.

Evaluation of Friction Coefficients of Prestressing Tendon Using Field Data (실측값을 활용한 긴장재 마찰계수의 산정)

  • Friction coefficients of the prestressing tendon are the basic information required to control the prestressing force introduced to PSC structure during jacking. However, the friction coefficients show considerable differences depending on the specifications, causing much confusion to designers. In this study, a procedure is proposed that can be used to estimate the wobble and curvature friction coefficients from field data and classical theory related to the friction. The procedure is applied to two PSC girder bridges with various tendon profiles. The resulting values are compared with those presented in some specifications and assumed in jacking. The resulting wobble friction coefficients are not as small as those presented in AASHTO specifications but are more or less similar to the lower limit of domestic standards, while the curvature friction coefficients approach or slightly exceed the upper limit of the same standards.

Fuzzy reliability analysis of laminated composites

  • The strength behaviors of Fiber Reinforced Plastics (FRP) Composites can be greatly influenced by the properties of constitutive materials, the laminate structures, and load conditions etc, accompanied by many uncertainty factors. So the reliability study on FRP is an important subject of research. Many achievements have been made in reliability studies based on the probability theory, but little has been done on the roles played by fuzzy variables. In this paper, a fuzzy reliability model for FRP laminates is established first, in which the loads are considered as random variables and the strengths as fuzzy variables. Then a numerical model is developed to assess the fuzzy reliability. The Monte Carlo simulation method is utilized to compute the reliability of laminas under the maximum stress criterion. In the second part of this paper, a generalized fuzzy reliability model (GFRM) is proposed. By virtue of the fact that there may exist a series of states between the failure state and the function state, a fuzzy assumption for the structure state together with the probabilistic assumption for strength parameters is adopted to construct the GFRM of composite materials. By defining a generalized limit state function, the problem is converted to the conventional reliability formula that enables the first-order reliability method (FORM) applicable in calculating the reliability index. Several examples are worked out to show the validity of the models and the efficiency of the methods proposed in this paper. The parameter sensitivity analysis shows that some of the mean values of the strength parameters have great influence on the laminated composites' reliability. The differences resulting from the application of different failure criteria and different fuzzy assumptions are also discussed. It is concluded that the GFRM is feasible to use, and can provide an effective and synthetic method to evaluate the reliability of a system with different types of uncertainty factors.

Superresolution of Optical Imaging System (광결상계의 초분해능)

  • Superrsolution of an optical imaging system, which resolves $\epsilon_O$ (half width of the square top amplitude impulse function) less than the Rayleigh's resolution limit $\epsilon_R$, is theoretically treated by using the diffraction theory, and an experimental system is proposed. Initially superresolution is stated as an inverse problem, and an integral equation is derived as a function of parameter $\beta$, which is positive. The integration is numerically carried out for the given aperture and those given values of $\beta$, which is 1, 5, 10, 15, and 20. 1/2$\times$FWHM's of the amplitude impulse functions are meassured for the cases of diffrent value of {J and in the case of $\beta=5$, the half-width already approaches to $\epsilon_O=0.1$,urn, which is, in the case of the present work, one fifth of the Rayleigh's resolution limit. It is found both the pupil function and the phase of the Huygens wave are to be modified, and theories of the pupil function modulation plate and the phase modulation hologram plate are also presented. The result obtained may be useful in ultrafine optical lithography.graphy.

The Effects of Feedback Loops on the Network Robustness by using a Random Boolean Network Model (랜덤 불리언 네트워크 모델을 이용한 되먹임 루프가 네트워크 강건성에 미치는 영향)

  • It is well known that many biological networks are very robust against various types of perturbations, but we still do not know the mechanism of robustness. In this paper, we find that there exist a number of feedback loops in a real biological network compared to randomly generated networks. Moreover, we investigate how the topological property affects network robustness. To this end, we properly define the notion of robustness based on a Boolean network model. Through extensive simulations, we show that the Boolean networks create a nearly constant number of fixed-point attractors, while they create a smaller number of limit-cycle attractors as they contain a larger number of feedback loops. In addition, we elucidate that a considerably large basin of a fixed-point attractor is generated in the networks with a large number of feedback loops. All these results imply that the existence of a large number of feedback loops in biological networks can be a critical factor for their robust behaviors.

Extreme value modeling of structural load effects with non-identical distribution using clustering

  • The common practice to predict the characteristic structural load effects (LEs) in long reference periods is to employ the extreme value theory (EVT) for building limit distributions. However, most applications ignore that LEs are driven by multiple loading events and thus do not have the identical distribution, a prerequisite for EVT. In this study, we propose the composite extreme value modeling approach using clustering to (a) cluster initial blended samples into finite identical distributed subsamples using the finite mixture model, expectation-maximization algorithm, and the Akaike information criterion; (b) combine limit distributions of subsamples into a composite prediction equation using the generalized Pareto distribution based on a joint threshold. The proposed approach was validated both through numerical examples with known solutions and engineering applications of bridge traffic LEs on a long-span bridge. The results indicate that a joint threshold largely benefits the composite extreme value modeling, many appropriate tail approaching models can be used, and the equation form is simply the sum of the weighted models. In numerical examples, the proposed approach using clustering generated accurate extrema prediction of any reference period compared with the known solutions, whereas the common practice of employing EVT without clustering on the mixture data showed large deviations. Real-world bridge traffic LEs are driven by multi-events and present multipeak distributions, and the proposed approach is more capable of capturing the tendency of tailed LEs than the conventional approach. The proposed approach is expected to have wide applications to general problems such as samples that are driven by multiple events and that do not have the identical distribution.

Analysis of the criticality of the shipping cask(KSC-7) (KSC-7 사용후핵연료 수송용기 핵임계해석)

  • The criticality of the shipping cask(KSC-7) for transportion of 7PWR spent fuel assemblies has been calculated and analysised on the basis of neutron transport theory. For criticality analysis, effects of the rod pitches, the fixed neutron absorbers(borated sus+boral) were considered. The effective multiplication factor has been calculated by KENO-Va, Mote Carlo method computer code, with the HANSEN-ROACH 16 group cross section set, which was made for personal computer system. The criticality for the KSC-7 cask was calculated in terms of the fresh fuel which was conservative for the aspects of nuclear critility. From the results of criticality analysis, the calculated Keff is proved to be lower than subcritical limit during normal transportation and under hypothetical accident condition. The maximum calculated criticalities of the KSC-7 were lower the safety criticality limit 1.0 recommended by US 10CFR71 both under normal and hypothetical accident condition. Also, to verify the KSC-7 criticality calculation results by using KENO-Va, it was carried out benchmark calculation with experimental data of B & W(Bobcock and Wilcox) company. From the 3s series of calculation of the KSC-7 cask and benchmark calculation, the cask was safely designed in nuclear criticality, respectively.

A Simplified Method for Predicting Failure Probability of Pipelines with Corrosion Defects (부식결함을 가진 배관의 파손확률 예측을 위한 단순화된 방법)

  • An alternative method is presented for predicting failure probability of pipelines with corrosion defects in this paper. The failure of corroded pipeline occurs when the operating pressure is grater than the remaining strength of the pipeline, and a limit state function can be defined as the differences between the remaining strength and the operating pressure. Then, based on structural reliability theory, we can estimate the failure probability of corroded pipeline, which is dependent on elapsed time of the pipeline with active corrosion defects. In this study, a root finding (RF) method has been adopted to solve the limit state function instead of Monte-Carlo simulation (MCS) method which traditionally has been employed to solve those kinds of problems. The calculation results shows that there are only small differences between the RF and the MCS method but the RF has higher efficiency in calculation than the MCS.
