This research is intended to examine adult children's experiences with parental bereavement and the effect of the experiences on family relationships and their lives. In order to describe the subjects' experiences as they are and understand their meaning and essence, data was analyzed using the Colaizzi method, an approach to phenomenology as a qualitative research methods. The findings showed that subjects suffered from the loss of parents; however, they recovered from their conditions after an ancestor worshiping service. In addition, they took heavy responsibility for a survived parent after bereavement and experienced changes in the roles of family members. In conclusion, experience with parental bereavement caused adult children to reflect on themselves, to discuss the essence of life, and to change the attitudes of their life from a future-oriented perspective to a here-and-now perspective.
This study investigated the relationship of daily life activity experiences to violent behaviors and their moderating effects on the relationship between stress and violent behaviors in early adolescence. A sample of 134 second year middle school students carried electronic watches for one week and provided reports on their objective activity situation and subjective states when signalled at random times. Stress was positively correlated with violent behaviors. Daily activity experiences were correlated with violent behaviors and moderated the relationship between stress and violent behaviors. More time spent in socializing and passive leisure, and negative emotional states during schoolwork and active leisure were correlated with higher violent behaviors. Lower motivational states during schoolwork were correlated with higher violent behaviors. Lower cognition of importance and attention states during schoolwork and higher cognition of importance and attention states during active leisure and maintenance activities were correlated with higher violent behaviors. Finally, the moderating effects of negative emotion during active leisure, motivation and attention states during schoolwork on the relationship of stress with violent behaviors were found among girls only.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experiences of new graduate nurses in personal life and in clinical setting during their first year. Methods: Eleven new graduate nurses were interviewed and the data were analyzed using the Giorgi's phenomenological method. On the other hand, there were some positive aspects on their minds: adjustmental/developmental needs, sense of responsibility, receptive capability, and proficiency with their work. They gradually found themselves being endured and changing to adapt. Conclusion: Transition from students to staff nurses is a very stressful experience for new graduate nurses. It may negatively affect their personal lives as well. However they tried to keep themselves positive to overcome their difficulties. It is necessary for them to be given time, a systematic program, and a supportive environment to adapt.

Purpose: This study aimed to determine the level of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of children and adolescents who received hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and to examine factors influencing HRQoL. Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study involved 85 participants aged 10 to 19 years who received treatment from 3 months to 5 years after HSCT. Symptom experiences, stress and coping, self-esteem, social support, and HRQoL were measured. Descriptive analysis, the independent t-test, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson correlation analysis, and stepwise multiple regression were used for data analysis. Results: The mean HRQoL score was 72.26 points out of 100. HRQoL showed statistically significant correlations with symptom experiences, stress, self-esteem, social support, satisfaction with peer relationships, and perceived attentiveness of the medical team. The most influential predictors of HRQoL were symptom experiences (β=-.51, p<.001) and satisfaction with peer relationships (β=.32, p<.001). Conclusion: The experiences of different symptoms by children and adolescents who receive HSCT must be considered. In addition, nursing interventions, such as self-help meetings with peer groups, should be provided to improve their HRQoL.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the illness experiences of patients who had spinal surgery. Methods: Colaizzi's phenomenological method was used for the data analysis. Patients who had spinal surgery were included in this study. The data was collected between April and October 2022 by conducting a one-on-one, in-depth interview. Results: Five theme clusters were identified based on the illness experiences of patients who had spinal surgery: "An agonizing life changed by pain", "Efforts to alleviate the pain", "Surgery was determined to be the best way to relieve pain", "Recovered daily life after relieving pain caused by surgery", and "Dedicated to living a healthy, pain-free life". The analysis further yielded 20 themes. Patients used various treatment methods to relieve pain, but ultimately chose surgery due to unbearable pain. Patients who had spinal surgery felt grateful that they were feeling good and healthy because they could return to their normal daily lives. After all, the pain was relieved after the surgery. Even though some pain remained unrelieved, the patients had the hope of getting better through exercise and rehabilitation. Conclusion: This study provides an in-depth understanding and meaning of the illness experiences of patients who had spinal surgery and presents new perspectives on clinical practice. The findings of this study are expected to be useful in developing and applying systematic and customized nursing interventions before and after spinal surgery.

Methods: The participants were nine nurses. Open in-depth interviews were used to collect data from June, 2016 to November, 2016. Colaizzi's phenomenological approach was used to analyze the data. Results: Three categories were identified. The nurses' reported experiences of end of life care of older adults with dementia were 'warm care with living together', 'care for family', and the 'self-reflection and responsibility as a nurse'. There were ten clusters of themes and 24 themes. Nurses reported the need for dementia hospice care. Conclusion: These results could be considered in planning nursing intervention for hospice care. Purpose: This qualitative study aimed to explore the lived and true meaning of experiences of middle-aged patients with complex regional pain syndrome. Methods: The participants were 10 men and women aged 40 to 60 years who received outpatient treatment at a university hospital, could communicate, and agreed to participate in the study. Data were collected through individual interviews using open and semi-structured questions from September 2019 to July 2021 and were analyzed using the content analysis method suggested by Hsieh and Shannon (2005). Results: As a result of this study, 42 summarized semantic units related to life experience, 15 subthemes, and seven themes were derived. The seven themes were "pressed by severe pain," "frustrated because I cannot be part of the community," "distressed because people do not recognize my disease," "sad about conflicts with family," "unmotivated because of desperate life," "appreciating for support," and "putting oneself together and living daily life." Conclusion: The vivid experiences of the participants derived in this study are the basic data for developing treatment guidelines. In the future, we propose a study on life and family care experiences according to the developmental characteristics of the life cycle of patients with complex regional pain syndrome and develop and apply programs to support patients and their families.
The purpose of this study was to synthesize and interpret the findings of previous qualitative studies that investigated the lived experiences of Korean emerging adults who aged out of the foster care system. Based on our selection criteria, we extracted and analyzed 14 papers that were published between 2010 to 2023. Our meta-synthesis found that the emerging adults' life world consisted of seven domains: family experience, life tasks, education and work, financial issues, home and family, interpersonal relationships, and psychological and emotional issues. We restructured the emerging adults' lived experiences using van Manen's concepts of lived time, lived space, lived things, lived self-other, and lived body. Our meta-synthesis revealed that these emerging adults experienced multidimensional difficulties due to shortcomings of formal and informal social support after aging out of the foster care system. Their difficulties accumulated in their interaction with lived time. Based on the level of their accumulated difficulties, we categorized the emerging adults into stable, struggling, and isolated groups. However, it is important to note that many of them adapted to their own life world and strived to move forward. This qualitative meta-synthesis provides a comprehensive understanding and new interpretation of emerging adults who transition from foster care to independent living in the context of Korea.
