Three New Records of Lichen Genera Opegrapha and Phaeographis from the Republic of Korea

  • This paper provides a description of Opegrapha herbarum, Opegrapha viridis and Phaeographis subdividens, all newly identified in the Republic of Korea. The characteristic features of O. herbarum include Varia-type asci, Subelevata-type ascospores, a lack of secondary metabolites and a saxicolous habitat. O. viridis possesses Calcarea-type asci, Vulgata-type ascospores and no chemicals in the thallus. P. subdividens is recognizable by its curved to sinuous lirellae, divergent labia, a brown and uniformly thick proper exciple which is open at its base, 3~4-septate ascospores, and lack of secondary metabolites. All three taxa are now reported to exist on Bogil Island in the Republic of Korea.

Taxonomic Study on the Lichen Genus Xanthoparmelia (Ascomycotina, Parmeliaceae) in Korea

  • In previous studies investigating the genus Xanthoparmelia, thirteen different species have been reported from South Korea alone. However, there currently has been no revisional study performed until now. To explore the genus Xanthoparmelia, a phenotypic analysis was performed based on morphological, anatomical and chemical characters, while an investigation of Xanthoparmelia phylogeny was based on nuclear ribosomal (nr) DNA ITS sequences. A thorough examination of the specimens deposited in the Korean Lichen Research Institute (KoLRI) confirmed that eight species of Xanthoparmelia occur inside South Korea. Our analysis further confirmed the colors of the lower surface and medullar chemistry are important taxonomic characters in Xanthoparmelia. This study also presents a detailed description of each species and a key to the genus.

  • Lichen genus Sarcographa Fee, a stromatoid Graphidacean taxa, was newly found in Geomun Island, Jeonnam province. The lichen grew on the bark of Camellia japonica and Eurya emarginata along the coastal line of the island. It was identified as Sarcographa tricosa (Ach.) Mull. Arg. for the first time in Korea.

족척에 발생한 편평태선 증례보고 1례 (A Case of Lichen Planus of the Sole)

  • Lichen planus is a unique inflammatory cutaneous and mucous membrane reaction pattern of unknown etiology. Lichen planus of the soles generally occurs as an isolated phenomenon. The lesions differ from classic lesions of lichen planus in that the papules are larger and aggregate into semitransluecent plaques with a globular waxy surface. We report a 38-year-old female patient with lichen planus of right sole. The lesion shows erythematous eroded patch, swelling and severe pain. We thought that she might have envolved erysipelas. So, we gave her oriental medicine and antibiotics, so she was improved. But after long walking, lesion began to getting worse. There appeared oozing, ulcer, pus, pain and swelling in her lesion. We gave her oriental medicine and wet dressinf. But it didn't work.

Effect of Ribitol and Plant Hormones on Aposymbiotical Growth of the Lichenforming Fungi of Ramalina farinacea and Ramalina fastigiata

  • This study was aimed at evaluating the growth promoting effect of symbiotic algal polyol (ribitol) and plant hormones on the lichen-forming fungi (LFF), Ramalina farinacea (CH050010 and 40403) and Ramalina fastigiata. The addition of ribitol to basal (malt-yeast extract) medium enhanced the relative growth rates of all three LFF. R. farinacea (CH050010), R. farinacea (40403) and R. fastigiata (H06127) showed 35.3%, 29.0% and 29.3% higher growth rates, respectively, compared to the control. IBA (indole-3-butyric acid) and TIBA (2,3,5-tridobenzoic acid) also increased growth rates of the LFF by 34 to 64% and 7 to 28%, respectively, compared to the control. The combination of ribitol with IBA or TIBA synergistically increased the growth of all LFF. For example, ribitol and IBA treatments increased growth rates of R. farinacea (CH050010), R. farinacea (40403) and R. fastigiata (H06127) by 79.4%, 40.3% and 72.8% in, respectively, compared to those grown on the basal medium. The stimulating effect of ribitol and IBA on the LFF growth induced vertical development of the fungal mass in culture. We suggest that lichen-forming fungal growth of Ramalina lichens can be stimulated aposymbiotically by supplementing polyols and plant hormones to the basal medium in the mass production of lichen secondary metabolites under large scale culture conditions.

북한 지의류에 대한 보고 (Report on the Lichen List of North Korea)

  • 북한 지의류 표본은 2006년부터 3년 동안 헝가리 자연사박물관으로부터 총 222점, 23과 54속 119종을 확보하였으며, 현재 모든 표본들은 국립수목원 표본실에 보관되어 있다. 이번에 확보된 지의류 표본에는 한반도에서 아직 보고되지 않은 12종이 포함되어 있다. 또한 헝가리 자연사박물관에서 입수한 미보고 묘향산 분포 지의류 목록을 재정리한 결과, 총 26과 57속 179종이 확인되었으며 이 중에는 한반도에서 아직 보고되지 않은 17종이 포함되어 있었으며 이번 북한 지의류 목록 정리 작업을 통하여 29종의 한반도 미보고 지의류 목록을 확보할 수 있었다. 북한 지의류에 대한 본 보고는 한반도 분포 지의류 연구를 위하여 매우 귀중한 자료로 활용될 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

The Lichen Flora of Oases of Continental Antarctic, and the Ecological Adaptations of Antarctic Lichens

  • Author have studies lichen flora of the most important ice-free areas of Continental Antarctic: Bunger Hills, and the vicinity of Prudz Bay (Larsemann Hills, and Radok Lake in Prince Charles Mountains). Totally 44 lichen species from 22 genera were reported for Bunger Hills and 50 lichen species from 22 genera and 10 families: Acarosporaceae, Lecanoraceae, Lecideaceae, Parmeliaceae, Pertusariaceae, Physciaceae, Rhizocarpaceae, Stereocaulaceae, Theloschistaceae, and Umbilicariaceaewere reported for the Prudz Bay Region. 20 lichen species were found in the region for the first time. Phytogeographic analysis indicated a relatively high proportion of species with bipolar distribution - about 50% of recorded lichen species. About 30% of lichens normally don't extend into maritime zone occurring in continental Antarctic only. The most common lichen families in the region are Buelliaceae, Lecanoraceae and Teloschistaceae. The water supply and not a temperature is the critical factor for lichens in the Continental Antarctic. Moisture appears to be supplied for lichens not only from snow-melt water but mainly from air. In Maritime Antarctic, due to high air humidity macrolichens form communities everywhere (Himantormia, Usnea and Umbilicaria). In oases of Continental Antarctic extensive sites are lacking in lichen cover, even if the ground is normally snow free. Lichens occur at humid sites with moisture which were brought by winds over the ice cap and poorly developed or absent in dry areas. Of particular significance for lichens are substrate characteristics, animals influence and salinity brought by wind in coastal areas. Most rich lichen vegetation developed in oases around nests of snow petrels, where the melt water is enriched by nutrients. In contrast, the most pure vegetation is on mobile sand and gravel and in salted coastal habitats.

New Record of Karoowia saxeti (Stizenb.) Hale in South Korea

  • Karoowia saxeti was recorded during the lichen field expedition in southern part of Korea in 2006. The lichen was found on the rock surface along coastal line. This species was easily recognized by chemistry (K+ yellow) and the presence of isidia. Thallus was saxicolous, subcrustose, more or less lobate at the center with clearly lobed margins, $2{\sim}6\;cm$ broad and pale yellowish green. Thalli lobes were irregular, variable, up to 1.0mm wide, not branched, flat to more or less convex and contiguous to subimbricate. Upper surface of the thalli was continuous, emaculate, moderately isidiate. The isidia was subglobose to cynlindrical, darkening at the tips and unbranched. Low surface of the thalii was black with a spongy rhizoidal and lamellar layer. HPLC analysis proved the presence of stictic acid (K+ yellow), norstictic acid and usnic acid. This is the first record of the species in South Korea.

다발성 백반증을 동반한 태선양 이형성증 (LICHENOID DYSPLASIA ASSOCIATED WITH MULTIPLE LEUKOPLAKIA : A CASE REPORT)

  • Lichenoid dysplasia is a lesion similar to oral lichen planus with epithelial dysplasia. It can be clinically mistaken for oral lichen planus, but has histologic features of dysplasia and a true malignant predisposition. It is not a variant or transitional form of lichen planus but, instead, represents a distinct entity that has a true potential for malignant transformation. In addition to abnormal epithelial maturation and cytology, lichenoid dysplasia exhibits other histologic features that separate it from oral lichen planus. Lichenoid dysplasia and lichen planus share many clinical and microscopic features, leading to the frequent misdiagnosis of unrecognized lichenoid dysplasia as lichen planus. We experienced a case of lichenoid dysplasia in the oral mucosa. We treated this patient with surgical excision. The patient has now been followed for two months. It is important to recognize this precancerous condition and inspect the excision site and remaining oral mucosa during long-term follow-up.

지의류 복합체에 의한 매실나무 지의류병 (Lichen Diseases on Prunus mume Caused by Colonization of Consortium of Several Crustose Lichens Including Parmotrema autrosinense)

  • 지의류는 곰팡이와 광합성을 하는 조류 또는 남조류의 공생체로서 토양, 바위, 나무 등에 아주 널리 분포하는 진핵생명체다. 지의류형성곰팡이는 흔히 죽은 나무나 죽어가는 나무 위에서 부착하여 증식하지만 나무를 직접적으로 죽이지는 않는다. 전남 순천시 매실나무 과수원 포장에 있는 매실나무 수피에 엽상체 지의류 Parmotrema autrosinense를 포함한 몇 가지 가상체 지의류가 심하게 증식하고 있었다. 이러한 지의류 조합의 증식으로 매실나무는 회색으로 흉하게 보이고 정상적인 생장이 억제되었으며, 심각하게 영향을 받은 매실나무 가지의 수피에서 지의체를 제거하지 않으면 낙엽이 지고 가지가 말라 죽었다. 매실나무 수피에 있는 지의체를 제거해주면 매실나무 가지들은 수세를 회복하였으며, 지의체를 제거한 후에 $Twin^{(R)}$ 20 또는 톱신페스트를 발라주면 더욱 수세가 왕성해졌다. 따라서 매실나무에 몇 가지 지의류 조합의 정착 및 증식에 의해 발생하는 낙엽과 가지마름 증상을 '매실나무 지의류병(lichen disease)'이라고 명명할 것을 제안한다.
