  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to compare the liberal arts curricula of domestic 3 year and 4 year dental hygiene departments and to obtain the basic data for the development of a standardized dental hygiene curriculum. Methods: The liberal arts curricula of fifteen 3 year and 4 year dental hygiene departments in Korea and other countries were analyzed. A survey was conducted on 801 selected dental hygiene majors from December 8 to 12, 2014. A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 750 dental hygiene students and 150 dental hygiene professors. The questionnaire consisted of 5 questions of general characteristics and 13 questions including curricula change, usability of curricula, awareness of the suitability of dental hygiene curricula, and validity of curricula. Cronbach'a alpha was 0.71 in this study. Results: The grade point average in the liberal arts courses in Korean 4 year dental hygiene departments were 29, which was higher than that in 3 year dental hygiene departments of 13.2. There were large disparities among the colleges in the credits of these courses. The most common liberal arts courses in 4 year dental hygiene departments were foreign languages, man, society and communication, and natural science. In 3 year dental hygiene departments, English and foreign languages were the most common courses, followed by computer, man and society, philosophy and ethics. Foreign languages were considered to be the liberal arts course that should be most strengthened according to the job environment change of dental hygienist in globalizing society, followed by social psychology and pedagogy. Conclusions: Liberal arts courses were offered in the 4 year dental hygiene departments than in the 3 year dental hygiene departments in Korea, but there were a great deal of differences between colleges. The preparation of standardized guidelines on liberal arts courses are necessary. Liberal arts courses should support the performance skill and knowledge of the dental hygienists.

Results: Of the 10 colleges, 9 did not stated purpose of liberal arts education. All 10 offered courses including foreign language, computer, and self-management, however each subjects did not have reflections of course visions. Findings revealed the credit score ratio of liberal arts subjects to be relatively lower than the major subjects. Students had limited opportunity to choose liberal arts subjects, with only a small proportion of the course available for elective subjects. Most liberal arts subjects were completed in the first year. Subjects' experience was not expanded and deepened gradually. Subject choices often overlapped, with limited variety of available subjects. Conclusion: For competent emergency medical technicians, the 3-year emergency medical technology course should improve the quality of its liberal arts offerings. The study of liberal arts provides the opportunity to develop broad perspectives and mature attitudes.

  • This research aims to examine the relationships between empathy and attitudes toward curricula integration of engineering students. To achieve this goal, first, differences in empathy and attitudes toward curricula integration among engineering students were examined. Second, the effects of attitudes toward curricula integration, as perceived by engineering undergraduate students, on empathy were explored. A total of three hundred and two engineering undergraduate students from three universities in Korea responded to survey based on a two-variables scale. The findings were that, firstly, a positive correlation among sub-factors of empathy and attitudes toward curricula integration was identified. Secondly, attitudes toward curricula integration could explain about 12% of empathy. The practical implications of these findings are discussed herein, with particular attention on education for promotion of empathy for engineering students.

  • The rapid change in school mathematics curricula occurred over last some periods requires lots of change or improvement in the education method for the university mathematics, especially in calculus. As an effort in this direction we restrict our concern to the freshmen of year 2002 of the Korea university of technology and education to investigate a correlation between their mathematics score on the national entrance examination and achievement score measured by their final grades in a calculus course. As a result of this research we propose a step-wise level educational model for the calculus education. In the model an appropriate teaching contents and method proceeding through the three steps are suggested and implementation issues are discussed. We believe that carrying out mathematics curricular are suggested in the model will be of service to calculus education particularly for student under the 7th national curriculum reform.

  • As media become diversified, animation fields are being expanded. Various types of animations which were not seen in the past have appeared and the fields which did not have a suffix of "animation" now use the words of animation like motion graphic-animation or interactive-animation. This thesis is a comparative analysis study of U.S. animation education. This study collected and reviewed respective curricula of total 5 universities such as Academy of Art University, California Art of Institute), Ringling College of Art and Design, Rhode Island School of Design, and School of Visual Arts which have led U.S. animation education since animation education was first introduced in 1961. Based on the result drawn from the analysis on the classification of animation curricula into a required subject, an elective subject, liberal arts, a theory subject and a practical subject, it intends to consider improvements of Korean animation curriculum.

  • A curriculum is a measure of how high level of knowledge is educated to students affiliated to university institutions, and is used as an indicator evaluating usefulness of the university institutions. For this reason, Designing and assessing curricula is a critical to high education institutions. However, in the case of development and quality assessment of a curriculum with a traditional way, finding a right curriculum which a designer intends is a time consuming and error-prone process. Therefore, in order to improve these problems, we propose the curriculum design engine using SES (System Entity Structure) / DEVS (Discrete Event System Specification) Framework in this paper. The SES describes all possible combination of curricula for students. The DEVS framework provides a simulation environment for models created from the SES by the students. The proposed engine will show appropriate curricula for students after a simulator appropriately filters students' requirement, according to conditions.

  • Purpose: This study aims to provide basic data for developing and improving a nationwide curriculum for advanced courses in dental technology departments. Methods: For the study, the 2021 academic curricula for all six universities with operating departments for advanced study of dental technology were investigated from November 18 to December 10, 2021. If a curriculum was not available for analysis on the university's website, it was obtained via e-mail or phone and then analyzed. Results: The curricula offered advanced courses in a range of 7~14 subjects, with an average of 9.7 subjects. The total number of credits ranged 20~33, and the average for all universities was 25.2. Among the total subjects opened, digital-related subjects comprised the largest proportion at 26.2%, followed by other major-related subjects (e.g., dental techniques, occlusion, and implants) and other liberal arts subjects. Conclusion: The study revealed that the curricula for bachelor's-level dental technology course at universities adequately reflect the industry demand. In the future, university leaders must maintain ongoing collaboration and consultation with industry experts with regard to school curricula for analyzing the education demand and industry prospects, including careers.

  • This study aims to investigate the current status of the operation system of the curriculum support extra-curricular program, focusing on the extra-curricular program operation system of other universities, and suggest the desirable operation system and performance management plan of the extra-curricular program in cultural education. To this end, the analysis of the extra-curricular program operation system of eight four-year universities in the Seoul metropolitan area was conducted on the existence of core competencies, computer systems and extra curricula program guides, credit-linked and mileage scholarship programs, and the analysis focused on the characteristics, merits and demerits of each university's operating system. It was also intended to propose the desirable operation system and performance management plan of the extra curricula program in liberal arts education, focusing on the operation system of the extra curricula program of E University and the corresponding performance management. Conclusion To operate the extra curricula program efficiently, the computer system and the extra curricula program guide, credit link and mileage scholarship system should be introduced. In addition, the analysis of the operation system of the curriculum support program of E University shows that E University operates systematically with the direction of operation of the core competency-based curriculum support extra-curricular program, and the performance management of the extra curricula program of E University is carried out through the EU-TQM System Integrated Management System.
