  • Objectives: Civic participation, that which directly influences important decisions in our personal lives, is considered necessary for developing a society. We hypothesized that civic participation might be related to self-rated health status. Methods: We constructed a multi-level analysis using data from the World Value Survey (44 countries, n=50 859). Results: People who participated in voting and voluntary social activities tended to report better subjective health than those who did not vote or participate in social activities, after controlling for socio-demographic factors at the individual level. A negative association with unconventional political activity and subjective health was found, but this effect disappeared in a subset analysis of only the 18 Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries. Moreover, social participation and unconventional political participation had a statistically significant contextual association with subjective health status, but this relationship was not consistent throughout the analysis. In the analysis of the 44 countries, social participation was of borderline significance, while in the subset analysis of the OECD countries unconventional political participation was a stronger contextual determinant of subjective health. The democratic index was a significant factor in determining self-rated health in both analyses, while public health expenditure was a significant factor in analysis of 18 countries. Conclusions: Our investigation suggests that civic participation, including unconventional political activity at the contextual level, might be a significant determinant of health status of a country.

  • A novel method for recognition, characterization, and quantification of deterioration in bridge components and laboratory concrete samples is presented in this paper. The proposed scheme is based on grey level co-occurrence matrix texture analysis using Haar's discrete wavelet transform on concrete imagery. Each image is described by a subset of band-filtered images containing wavelet coefficients, and then reconstructed images are employed in characterizing the texture, using grey level co-occurrence matrices, of the different types and degrees of damage: map-cracking, spalling and steel corrosion. A comparative study was conducted to evaluate the efficiency of the supervised maximum likelihood and unsupervised K-means classification techniques, in order to classify and quantify the deterioration and its extent. Experimental results show both methods are relatively effective in characterizing and quantifying damage; however, the supervised technique produced more accurate results, with overall classification accuracies ranging from 76.8% to 79.1%.

  • We discuss various types of sublattice of the lattice of intuitionistic fuzzy subgroups of a given group. We prove that a special class of intuitionitic fuzzy normal subgroups constitutes a modular sublattice of the lattice of intuitionistic fuzzy subgroups.

  • We prove that there exists a canonical level-preserving isomorphism between the stable Morse homology (or the Morse homology of generating functions) and the Floer homology on the cotangent bundle $T^*M$ for any closed submanifold $N \subset M$ for any compact manifold M.

  • The concept of weak implicative filters is introduced in BE-algebras. Some characterizations of weak implicative filters are derived in terms of filters of a BE-algebra. Fuzzification is applied to the class of weak implicative filters. Some properties of fuzzy weak implicative filters are studied with respect to fuzzy relations and homomorphisms. The notion of triangular normed fuzzy weak implicative filters is introduced in BE-algebras and their properties are studied.

  • Recently, there are some empirical Bayes procedures using NA samples. We point out a key equality which may not hold for NA samples. Thus, the results of those empirical Bayes procedures based on NA samples are dubious

  • In this paper we define the concept of anti fuzzy $H_v$-subgroup of an $H_v$ -group and prove a few theorems concerning this concept. We also obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for a fuzzy subset of an $H_v$-group to be an anti fuzzy $H_v$ -subgroup. We also abtain a relation between the fuzzy $H_v$-subgroups and the and the anti fuzzy $H_v$-subgroup.

  • The various fuzzy subgroups of a group which are admissible under operator domains are studied. In particular, the classes of all inner automorphisms, automorphisms, and endomorphisms are applied on the fuzzy subgroups of a group. As results, several theorems and examples concerning the fuzzy subgroups following from these kinds of operator domains are obtained. Moreover, we prove that a necessary condition for a fuzzy subgroup to be characteristic is that the center of the fuzzy subgroup is characteristic.

  • W. Liu [11] has studied fuzzy ideals of a ring, and many researchers [5,6,7,16] are engaged in extending the concepts. The notion of fuzzy ideals and its properties were applied to various areas: semigroups [8,9,10,13,15], distributive lattices [2], artinian rings [12], BCK-algebras [14], near-rings [1]. In this paper we obtained an exact analogue of fuzzy ideals for near-ring which was discussed in [5, 11].

  • The modern technological era has brought about the Semantic Web. Ontologies are essential to achieve the vision of the Semantic Web. Ontologies enable machines to understand data. The Arabic Language currently does not have a significant presence on the Web. To achieve a comparable level of Arabic access to other important languages, further work is needed to build Arabic ontologies. A goal is to design and create a robust Arabic ontology that represents the concepts from a large and significant subset of Arabic. We use a source of Hadiths (prophet saying and deeds) from Riyadh As-Saliheen. Preliminary results are very promising.
