  • To investigate the influences of morphological features and the chemical compound of rice grain on the crack of rice kernels, rice was cultivated under the different method of fertilizer application and was harvested at optimal and late stage to the crack features of kernels of cracked and healthy grains. The results are summarized as follows ; The occurrence of cracked kernel was more severe in "Samgang-byeo" than in "Nagdong-byeo" and the rice harvested at the late stage was more cracked kernel than that of optimal harvest. The application of silicate fertilizer in addition to the N.P.K. fertilizer resulted in the decrease of cracked kernels. The grain weight, the grain volume (length ${\times}$ width ${\times}$ thickness), grain length and grain length/grain width etc. of the cracked kernels were larger than those of the healthy grains. The long "Samgang-byeo", having the long grain Shape, which has larger ratio of grain length/grain width than that of "Nagdong-byeo", shows higher rate of cracked kernels. The grain of "Samgang-byeo" which is easily cracked relatively it contains lower silica and higher phosphorus while "Nagdong-byeo" shows the opposite results. The ratio of silica/phosphorus in the grain was low in "Samgang-byeo" but it was high in "Nagdong-byeo". The ratio of silica/phosphorus in rice grain was increased by the application of silicate fertilizer in addition with N.P.K. fertilizers.

  • Dissimilar metal joints (DMJs) are more common in the application of piping system of many industries. A 2- D and 3-D finite element analysis (FEA) is carried out on dissimilar metal Single Edged Notch Bending (DMSENB) specimens fabricated from ferritic steel, austenitic steel and Inconel - 182 alloy to study the behavior of DMJs with constraints by using linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) principles. Studies on DMSENB specimens are conducted with respect to (i) dissimilar metal joint width (DMJW) (geometrical constraints) (5 mm, 10 mm, 20 mm, 30 mm and 50 mm) (ii) strength mismatch (material constraints) and (iii) crack lengths (16 mm, 20 mm and 24 mm) to study the DMJ behavior. From the FEA investigation, it is observed that (i) SIF increases with increase of crack length and DMJWs (ii) significant constraint effect (geometry, crack tip and strength mismatch) is observed for DMJWs of 5 mm and 10 mm (iii) stress distribution at the interfaces of DMSENB specimen exhibits clear indication of strength mismatch (iv) 3-D FEA yields realistic behavior (v) constraint effect is found to be significant if DMJW is less than 20 mm and the ratio of specimen length to the DMJW is greater than 7.4.

  • In this experiment, gene action were analyzed for seven silkworm varieties in order to obtain basic information on their genetic improvement by diallel crosses. The results obtained were summarized as follows : In F1 generation, over-dominance was shown by Vr-Wr graphic analysis in four characters such as cocoon length in female, bave weight, cocoon weight and boiling off ratio in both male and female, and partial dominance in four characters such as fifth instar period, cocoon layer weight, cocoon layer ratio and bave length. In F2 generation, the partial dominance in all characters were obtained. Components of genetic variance analyzed for five characters such as fifth instar period, cocoon width, cocoon layer weight, cocoon layer ratio and fibroin contents in F1 generation, and for four characters such as cocoon width, cocoon layer weight, cocoon layer ratio and frbroin contents in F2 generation showed that addition effects were higher than dominant effects.

  • Background A number of conditions can alter a person's fingernail configuration. The ratio between fingernail width and length (W/L) is an important aesthetic criterion, and some underlying diseases can alter the size of the fingernail. Fingernail curvature can be altered by systemic disorders or disorders of the fingernail itself. Although the shape and curvature of the fingernail can provide diagnostic clues for various diseases, few studies have precisely characterized normal fingernail configuration. Methods We measured the W/L ratio of the fingernail, transverse fingernail curvature, hand length, hand breadth, and distal interphalangeal joint width in 300 volunteers with healthy fingernails. We also investigated whether age, sex, height, and handedness influenced the fingernail W/L ratio and transverse fingernail curvature. Results In women, fingernail W/L ratios were similar across all five fingers, and were lower than those in men. The highest value of transverse fingernail curvature was found in the thumb, followed by the index, middle, ring, and little fingers. Handedness and aging influenced transverse fingernail curvature, but not the fingernail W/L ratio. Fingernails were flatter on the dominant hand than on the non-dominant hand. The radius of transverse fingernail curvature increased with age, indicating that fingernails tended to flatten with age. Conclusions Our quantitative data on fingernail configuration can be used as a reference range for diagnosing various diseases and deformities of the fingernail, and for performing reconstructive or aesthetic fingernail surgery.

  • This paper evaluated the optimum Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) using a circular concrete bridge pier subjected to dynamic loading. A three-dimensional finite element model was simulated using finite element program, ABAQUS. Concrete Damage Plasticity (CDP) option and plastic properties of the materials were incorporated to model the non-linearity of the structure. The analyses parameters were changed in length-to-height ratio and width-to-span ratio where columns were subjected to dynamic loading. Numerical analysis was conducted, and the seismic performance of the structures were evaluated by analyzing the ductility behavior of the structure. Results showed that the use of CFRP enhances the structural performance of column and revealed that the increase in length-to-height ratio plays vital role of improving the performance of the structure than the change in width-to-span ratio.

  • In this paper a transfer matrix method is developed to solve for bending vibration of beam with linearly reduced width, and subsequently used to determine the exact natural frequencies for such problems. The differential equation, shear force, and bending moment are derived from Hamilton's principle, and the roots of the differential equation are computed using the power series solution of the Frobenius method. The effect of various taper ratio for bending vibration of beam with linearly reduced width is investigated in detail, and to validate the accuracy of the proposed method the results computed are compared with those given from commercial software(ANSYS).

  • To increase rolling yields by minimizing trimming losses of hot-rolled plate, optimization logic for the edger model has been developed. The logic to determine optimum edging amount model has been formulated on the basis of actual production rolling data. In case of broadside rolling, the fish tail shape at the sides of plate was better for reducing the crop loss and this could be achieved when the edging amount of broadside rolling was increased. At a given broadside rolling ratio, methodology to determine optimum edging amount for the finish rolling which could minimize the width deviation of plate were systematically derived. Therefore, for a given broadside rolling condition and the permissible tolerance in width deviation of plate, it was possible to optimize the edging amount in finish rolling to maximize rolling yields. The application of optimization logic in this study increased rolling yields from approximately 10% to 30% at various longitudinal eding raitos.

  • An experimental study was performed on the time lag, lift and drag characteristics of a multi functional spoiler which is a device to increase lift and drag contrary to conventional spoiler which decrease lift and increase drag. In this study, a wind tunnel investigation was made of the effect of incidence angle, slot width, and chordwise location of multi functional spoiler on the time lag, lift and drag characteristics of a wing. The results indicate that the time lag of a multi functional spoiler is influenced mainly not only by the chordwise location of a spoiler but also by the slot width between spoiler and wing upper surface. Multi functional spoiler can reduce time lag effectively by slotting the trailing edge of spoiler with slot ratio (slot width devided by the wing chord length) between 0.05 and 0.1. Also, it shows that the lift and drag coefficients of the wing with the multi functional spoiler and trailing edge flap are increased by 20% and 80%, respectively, compared to the wing with trailing edge flap only.

  • For chip-stack package applications, Cu filling characteristics into trench vias of $75{\sim}10\;{\mu}m$ width and 3 mm length were investigated with variations of the electroplating current density and the speed of a rotating disc electrode (RDE). Cu filling characteristics into trench vias were improved with increasing the RDE speed. There was a Nernst relationship between half width of trench vias of Cu filling ratio higher than 95% and the minimum RDE speed, and the half width of trenches with 95% Cu filling ratio was linearly proportional to the reciprocal of root of the minimum RED speed.
