Lesser known indigenous vegetables as potential natural egg colourant in laying chickens

  • Background: A six-week study involving two hundred and fifty (250) Harco Black layer birds at point of lay was conducted to investigate the effects of potential natural colorant on performance and Egg quality traits. The birds were assigned to five (5) dietary treatments, each containing supplements either of control, Baobab Leaf (BL), Waterleaf (WL), Red Pepper (RP), Canthaxanthin (CTX) at 40 g/kg feed and 50 mg/kg feed of natural and commercial colorants, respectively. Results: Performance records shows that there was no significant (p > 0.05) difference in feed intake across the supplements of Red pepper, Water leaf, Canthaxanthin and control diet, however, birds fed Baobab leaf treatment had a significantly lower (p < 0.05) feed intake value (94.07 g) when compared with other treatments. Body weight gain and Hen Day Production were not significant influenced (p > 0.05) by the dietary treatments, although laying hens fed Baobab leaf supplement had lowest mean HDP of 48.80%, while birds fed Red pepper and Water leaf supplement had an average value of 52.79%. There was no significant effect (p > 0.05) of colorants on egg external traits, compared with the control; birds fed Canthaxanthin treatment had higher mean egg weight (51.79 g), egg length (4.55 g), egg breadth (3.29 g); Red pepper treatment had highest mean shell thickness (0.29 g), however these differences were not significant (p > 0.05). Yolk height, Albumen height, Yolk index, and Haugh unit were not significantly affected (p > 0.05) across treatments. Yolk width was lowest (p < 0.05) in Baobab leaf treatment (2.54 cm); Red pepper, Water leaf and Canthaxanthin (2.89 cm, 2.62 cm and 2.89 cm respectively) were not significantly (p > 0.05) different from the control (2.73 cm). Yolk colour score was significantly highest (p < 0.05) in Red pepper treatment (7.50); Water leaf, Baobab leaf and Canthaxanthin ranged between 2.25-3.31 on the DSM yolk colour fan, Control treatment had the lowest yolk colour score (p < 0.05) of 1.31. Conclusion: The study showed Red pepper as a worthy alternative to commercial yolk colorant. Water leaf and baobab are not good substitutes for canthaxanthin as a yolk colourant.

품종 및 저장온도가 상추 저장성에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Cultivars and Storage Temperatures on Shelf-life of Leaf Lettuces)

  • 상추를 포장하여 품종('적치마', '청치마', '적축면', '청축면')과 저장온도(0, 8, 16 및 $24^{\circ}C$)에 따른 저장성을 구명하고자 중량 감소율, 호흡률, 선도, 색소함량 및 색상차 등을 조사하였다. 저장온도 조건에 따라 품종별 차이를 달리 보여, 저온($0^{\circ}C$)에서는 중량감소 정도 및 선도, 호흡률 등에 의한 품종별 차이가 크지 않았으나, 저장 온도가 높아지면서 변화 정도와 차이가 커졌다. 중량감소 및 선도 변화에 있어서는 저온 저장 온도인 $0^{\circ}C$에서는 30일간 저장하여도 품종간의 차이가 크지 않았으나, 상추의 유통과정에서 조우 할 수 있는 온도 범위인 $8^{\circ}C$에서는 저장기간이 짧아지면서 품종에 따른 변화 정도가 인정되었으며, $24^{\circ}C$와 같은 높은 온도에서는 저장기간이 짧았음에도 불구하고 품종에 따른 중량 감소 정도에 차이를 보였다. 호흡률 또한 온도가 높아짐에 따라 증가하면서 품종에 따른 차이가 커졌으며 이는 색소함량 등에서도 같은 경향을 보였다. 이는 온도가 높은 저장 조건에서는 품종과 같은 내재된 요인에 의해 저장성의 차이를 보이지만 저장온도가 낮으면 이러한 요인이 억제되어 저장성의 차이가 발현되지 않은 것으로 생각된다.

Genetic Characteristics and Anthocyanin Content of Basil(Ocimum basilicum L.)

  • Basil(Ocimum basilicum L.) is an annual herb that grows wild in hot and humid regions such as tropical Asia and Africa. This study was carried out for resource discovery, propagation, and DB construction of aromatic plants. In order to evaluate the genetic characteristics, 28 kinds of basil seeds were supplied from the Center for Genetic Resources. For basil characteristics, planting date, plant height, growth shape, leaf length, leaf shape, petiole color, petiole, stem color, flower color, after harvest, Ml length including roots, flower length, stem thickness and biological weight were measured. For anthocyanin analysis, only basil with purple color was selected, anthocyanins were extracted with 60% ethanol containing 1% citric acid, a standard quantitative curve was prepared with cyanidin-3-glucoside, and absorbance was measured at 525 nm. Basil planting started around June 16, and the flowering period lasted for a total of 18 days from July 19 to August 5. On August 6, when flowering was completed, morphological characteristics including flower color were measured at the site by an object. The measured basil plant length was 26.6-59.6 cm, leaf length 2.0-7.9 cm, leaf width 0.7-5.2 cm, and petiole 1.3-3.9 cm. The growth pattern of basil was generally straight, medium in shape. The color of the leaves was observed evenly by mixed green, purple, purple and green, and the recesses in the shape of the leaf were also conspicuously observed. A total of three basil flower colors were observed: white, light pink(149P 10P/84), and purple(37V 2.5RP 4/12). During the second growth survey after harvest, the total length including the basil roots is 26.7-52.0 cm, the flower length is 8.2-29.3cm, the stem thickness is 7.1-15.9mm, the number of stem nodes is 3-12 nodes, and the total weight of the basil was measured to be about 218-1540 g. There are a total of 16 types of basil expressed in purple, and the anthocyanin content was measured to be 73.74 ~ 380.72 mg/100g.

Effects of Ultraviolet-B Radiation on Growth and Photosynthesis in Cucumber Primary Leaves

  • In the present study we studied the growth, photosynthetic traits and protective mechanisms against oxidative stress in the primary loaves of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) seedlings with or without UV-B treatment. Cucumber seedings were irradiated with UV-B for 10 days in environment-controlled growth chambers. The primary leaves irradiated with UV-B showed reduction in leaf length and decreased biomass production. The reduced biomass production seemed to be due to a negative effect of UV-B radiation on the photosynthetic process. Changes in chemical properties of leaf, such as chi a/b ratio affected photosynthesis. UV-B significantly affected chl b content compared with chi a in the light harvesting complex resulting reduced photosynthetic activity Fv/Fm decreased with an UV-B stress, suggesting that the photosynthetic apparatus, and particularly, PS II was damaged under UV-B stress. Malondialdehyde(MDA) concentration which represents the state of membrane lipid peroxidation Increased significantly under UV-B stress confirming an oxidative stress. UV-B exposure with SA solution(0.1-1.0 mM) can partially ameliorated some of the detrimental effects of UV-B stress. Leaf injuries including loss of chlorophyll and decreased ratio of Fv/Fm were reduced with combined application of UV-B and SA. ABA and JA showed similar mode of action in physiological effects on photosynthetic activities though the levels were lower than those from SA treated plants. Chloroplast ultrastructure was also affected by UV-B exposure. The thickness of leaf tissue components decreased and the number of grana and thylakoids was reduced in chloroplast applied UV-B or SA alone. At combined stress granal and stromal thylakoids were less affected. The leaves under combined stress acquired a significant tolerance to oxidative stress. From these results, it can be suggested that SA may have involved a protective role against UV-B induced oxidative damage.

여름철 과산화수소를 이용한 파프리카(Capsicum annuum L.) 안정생산기술 (Stable Production Technique of Paprika (Capsicum annuum L.) by Hydrogen Peroxide Treatment at Summer)

  • 본 연구는 파프리카 재배농가에서 과산화수소를 이용하여 여름철 고온극복에 관한 연구수행 결과이다. 고온기 과산화수소(순도 30%)를 0.3%로 희석하여 5일주기로 살포한 결과 파프리카의 엽이 두꺼워지고 기공저항 속도가 낮아 순조로운 증산작용이 가능하였다. 주당 착과수는 무처리에 비하여 약 2개가 많았다. 또한 과산화수소처리에 따라 엽내 과산화수소량이 증가하는 경향이었고, 항산화효소인 catalase와 peroxidase의 활력이 증가되었다. 여름철 파프리카 재배에서 가장 많이 발생하는 흰가루병 방제를 위하여 농약사용이 불가피한 상황이지만 생산물의 농약잔류 등으로 사용에 많은 제한이 있는 현 상황에서 과산화수소의 주기적인 이용으로 흰가루병을 방제할 수 있고 생산량도 높일 수 있어 금후 파프리카 재배농가의 많은 이용이 기대 된다.

韓半島에 자생하는 돌뽕나무(Morus tiliaefolia Makino)의 稔性 및 재배학적 특성 (The Fertility and Some Agronomic Characteristics of Morus tiliaefolia Makino Growing Wild in the Korean Peninsula)

  • 한반도에 자생하는 돌뽕나무(Morus tiliaefolia)의 임성과 재배학적 특성은 다음과 같다. 1. 종자형성률은 46∼80%이며 종자의 발아율은 19∼28%에 불과하다 2. 개화최성기(1994년)는 4월 28일∼5월 3일로서 산뽕나무보다는 늦고 개량뽕보다 빠르다 3. 춘기 동아의 탈포기는 4월 21일∼24일로서 산뽕나무와 개량뽕보다 늦다. 4. 잎은 대형으로 엽형지수 1.05의 폭광성을 나타내며 잎두께는 산뽕나무보다 두껍다. 5.성숙엽의 화학성분은 가용성 무질소물과 조회분이 많고 조단백질, 조지방, 조섬유가 적다. 6. 낮추베기때의 자세는 대부분 전개성이며 가지는 조장형이고 절간장이 길다 7. 추위견딜성과 뽕나무 동고병에 약하다.

녹차잎분말을 사용한 마루판의 특성 (Characteristics of Fancy Veneer Plywood Floor using Green Tea Leaves Powder)

  • This research was carried out to examine the properties of fancy cherry veneer overlaid on the PF resin bonded Meranti plywood floor, which 2.5% green tea leaf powder was applied in the UV varnishes and the adhesives for scavenging the volatile organic compounds. The results were as follows: 1. The various properties of the treated samples, such as density, moisture content, thickness swelling, bending strength(MOR), adhesion shear strength, surface abrasion, curling, cyclic delamination test with boiling water, boiling property, cold-resistance and heat resistance, acid resistance and alkali resistance, and anti-contamination property showed no significant difference between the properties of the control samples. 2.5% green tea leaf powder treated floor gave a little better results than the control for surface scratch test. 2. In case of QUV and weathering test, no difference between the treated sample and control was found. 3. The floor was discolored by adding 10% green tea leaf powder to UV coating, and the floor was also discolored to light green during by the soaking test. The color of floor was not changed up to 5% addition level.

보존용액에 함유된 당, 살균제 및 ABA가 절화국화의 수확후 품질에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Sucrose, Germicides and ABA in the Preservatives on Postharvest Quality of Cut Chrysanthemum 'Kyoungsubang`)

  • An investigation was conducted to elucidate the effect of sucrose, germicides and abscisic acid (ABA) in the preservatives on postharvest quality, such as fresh weight, solution uptake, vase life, diameter and thickness of flower, and chlorolhyll of leaf in cut chrysanthemum 'Kyoungsubang`. Fresh weight of cut chrysanthemum was highest in 250mg/L aluminum sulfate [{TEX}$Al_{2}(SO_{4})_{3}${/TEX}]+3% sucrose and 250 mg/L 8-hydroxyquinoline sulfate (8-HQS)+ 3% sucrose. Addition of sucrose and germicides inhibited microorganisms growth in solution, and apparently promoted solution uptake. The increased fresh weight seems to attribute to the elevated uptake. Germicide 8-HQS was more effective than {TEX}$Al_{2}(SO_{4})_{3}${/TEX} in the aspect of solution uptake and fresh weight. Treatment of 250 mg/L 8-HQS +3% sucrose showed the longest vase life (24.67±2.52 days) and the lowest rate of leaf chlorosis (or senescence). Addition of {TEX}$Al_{2}(SO_{4})_{3}${/TEX} and sucrose accelerated leaf chlorosis and increased diameter of flower, respectively. Sucrose treatment prolonged the vase life of flowers. Except control and 250 mg/L 8-HQS, content of chlorophyll was rapidly decreased after 6 days at upper, middle and lower leaves in order.

Relationship between Diversity and Productivity at Ratargul Fresh Water Swamp Forest in Bangladesh

  • One of the most concerned topics in ecology is the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. However, there are few field studies, carried out in forests, although many studies have been done in controlled experiments in grasslands. In this paper, we describe the relationship pattern between three facets of diversity and productivity at Ratargul Fresh Water Swamp Forest (RFWSF) in Bangladesh, which is the only remaining fresh water swamp forest of the country. Sixty sample plots were selected from RFWSF and included six functional traits including leaf area (LA), specific leaf area (SLA), leaf dry matter content (LDMC), tree height, bark thickness and wood density. In analyzing TD, we used Shannon diversity and richness indices, functional diversity was measured by Rao's quadratic entropy (Rao 1982) and Faith's (1992) index was used for phylogenetic diversity (PD). It was found that, TD, FD and PD were positively related with productivity (basal area) due to resource use complementarity but surprisingly the best predictor of tree productivity was FD. The results contribute to the understanding the effects of biodiversity loss and it is essential for conservation decision-making and policy-making of Ratargul Fresh Water Swamp Forest.

차광처리에 따른 병풍쌈의 용기 내 발아 및 초기생장 특성 (Characteristics of Germination and Early Growth of Parasenecio firmus in Container by Shading Treatment)

  • 본 연구는 병풍쌈을 대상으로 종자의 전처리(상온건조, 저온건조, 수침처리를 각각 48시간 동안 실시)에 따른 차광처리별 발아특성과 유묘의 생장특성을 알아보고자 하였다. 실험은 전처리된 종자를 용기에 파종하여 차광시설(전광 및 35%, 50%, 75%, 95% 차광)에 각각 배치하여 진행하였다. 종자의 발아율은 25.7~61.1%의 범위로 조사되었으며 전광 내 수침처리구에서 61.1%로 가장 높게 나타났다. 병풍쌈 유묘의 초장생장은 95% 차광에서, 근원직경은 전광에서 가장 높은 것으로 조사되었다. 엽생장(엽면적, 엽장, 엽폭, 엽두께)과 뿌리생장(전체뿌리길이, 뿌리투영단면적, 뿌리표면적, 평균뿌리직경, 뿌리부피)은 전반적으로 35%~75% 차광에서 양호한 것으로 조사되었으며 95% 차광에서는 가장 저조한 생장을 보였다. 또한, 부위별(잎, 줄기, 뿌리) 및 전체 생중랑은 모두 50% 차광에서, 지상부(잎, 줄기)와 전체 건중량은 75% 차광에서 가장 높은 것으로 조사되었으며 95% 차광에서는 모든 부위에서 가장 저조한 생장을 보인 것으로 나타났다 따라서 본 실험의 결과를 종합하면, 병풍쌈의 종자는 수침처리하여 높은 광도에서 발아시킨 후 어느 정도의 차광처리(50%~75% 차광)를 하는 것이 용기 유묘생산에 보다 효과적일 것으로 판단된다.
