  • This study was conducted to obtain the basic information on setting up selection procedure using seedling characteristics in Angelica gigas Nakai lines. Morphological characteristics of the seedlings including height, leaf and petiole length among lines tested showed difference significantly, meaning that earlier selection was possible. Bolting rate at maturity ranged from 0.6 to 74.6% and root yield did from 350 to 3,893kg/ha. Root yield was increased in the lines with below 5% bolting rate. Heritabilities of petiole length, seedling height and leaf length in seedling stage bolting rate and root yield were high, while those of leaf length, root diameter and root length were relatively low. Bolting rate at maturity was positively correlated with seedling height, leaf length, leaf width, petiole length and number of leaves. A highly significant negative correlation was showed between root yield and seedling height, leaf length and width, petiole length, number of leaves, root length or bolting rate. From the above results the selection markers were found to be height, leaf length and petiole length in seedling stage.

  • This study aimed to identify leaf sheath function through the investigation of effect of removal times and removed number of leaf sheath on growth and flowering in gladiolus. The leaf sheath influenced on the growth and flowering regardless of light condition at early growth stages. When total leaf sheath were removed in early growth stages, flower stalk length and spike length remarkably decreased. Whereas days of flowering were little different by leaf sheath removal. Also when removed numbers of leaf sheath were 1, 2 and 3, the growth and flowering were little different compared to control. But when removed numbers of leaf sheath were 4, flower stalk length decreased above 25cm compared to others treatment, spike length and number of flower decreased and stem diameter became thick abnormally.

  • The morphology and flowering time of two Suaeda japonica populations from different habitats, the creek and the bank of the mudflat in Sorae, were surveyed. And standard transplantation and reciprocal transplantation were carried out to determine whether their characteristics were genetically fixed or not. Also soil sample of these habitats were analyzed. The amounts of loss on ignition, maximum field capacity, total nitrogen, exchangeable calcium and potassium, and soluble phosphorus were found to be significantly different between two habitats. Leaf thickness, leaf width, leaf length, stem height number of branches, and number of seeds were significantly different between plants of two populations. And flowering times of two populations did not overlap. According to the results of transplantation, leaf width, leaf thickness, and flowering times were the same as those at their original habitat. But the stem lenght, leaf lenght, number of branches and unmber of seeds were not. Therefore, the differences in the leaf length, leaf thickness, and flowering time seemed to bo genetically fixed. It were suggested that the creek bank populations of Suaeda japoinica were to be considered as different ecotypes.

  • The aim of this study was to examine the morphological responses of Hosta longipes, an ornamental plants for heavy metal contaminated soils in urban landscaping, to heavy metals Cd, Pb, and Zn. Plants were grown in artificial soil amended with Cd, Pb, and Zn at concentation of 0, 100, 250, and 500 mg/kg. Plant height, leaf length, leaf width, total leaf number, deaf leaf number, new leaf number, chlorophyll contents, and ornamental value were monitored from May to August. At 4 months after planting, the survival and morphological responses of H. longipes grown in soil amended with Cd at concentrations ${\geq}100mg/kg$ were severely affected compared to those grown in the control soil. Relative leaf length rate and relative leaf width rate were significantly decreased when the concentration of Pb was increased. Total leaf number, chlorophyll contents, and ornamental value were the lowest value in plants grown in soil amended with Pb at level of 500 mg/kg. Relative leaf length rate and relative leaf width rate, total leaf number, dead leaf number, new leaf number, and ornamental values had a tendency of decrease when plants were grown in soils amended with Zn. However, no significant difference was found among treatments except for plants were grown in soils amended with 500 mg/kg Zn. Therefore, Hosta longipes might be useful for phytoremediation of Zn contaminated sites as herbaceous ornamental plants.

  • We compared two nondestructive methods for leaf area estimation using leaves of 16 common plant species classified into six types depending on leaf shape. Relatively good linear relationships between actual leaf area (LA) and leaf length (L), width (W), or the product of length and width (LW) were found for ordinary leaves with lanceolate, oblanceolate, linear and sagitttate shapes with entire margins, serrate margins, mixed margins with a entire form and shallow lobes, and ordinary incised margins. LA was better correlated with LW than L or W, with $R^2$ > 0.91. However, for deeply incised lobes, LA estimation using LW showed low correlation coefficient values, indicating low accuracy. On the other hand, a method using photographic paper showed a good correlation between estimates of area based on the mass of a cut-out leaf image on a photographic sheet (PW) and actual leaf area for all types of leaf shape. Thus, the PW method for LA estimation can be applied to all shapes of leaf with high accuracy. The PW method takes a little more time and has a higher cost than leaf estimation methods using LW based on leaf dimensions. These results indicate that researchers should choose their nondestructive LA estimation method according to their research goals.
