Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.), one of the four major fiber crops, is attracting attention for its efficient CO2-absorbing ability and versatility for producing daily supplies, including textiles. In Korea, a new cultivar 'Jangdae' was established in 2013. The ease of cultivation and seed gathering of 'Jangdae' has led to its nationwide cultivation. However, evaluation of the bioactivities of the different parts of kenaf, and especially the 'Jangdae' cultivar, remains rudimentary. In this study, the antithrombosis and antioxidant activities of extracts prepared from different parts of the 'Jangdae' cultivar were evaluated by determining their effects on blood clot formation. Extracts prepared from seeds (HC-SD), seedpods (HC-SP), leaves (HC-L), stems (HC-S), and roots (HC-R) of the 'Jangdae' cultivar strongly inhibited blood clot formation. In particular, the HC-SD, HC-SP, and HC-S extracts showed strong inhibition against the coagulation factors prothrombin, and thrombin. The HC-SP extract showed strong antioxidant activities, such as scavenging ability against DPPH anion, ABTS cation, nitrite, and reducing power. Since blood clot formation is closely related to oxidative stress, the HC-SP extract could be developed as a novel anticoagulation and antioxidant resource. This is the first report of the antithrombosis activities of different parts of H. cannabinus L. cv. 'Jangdae'.

Dystaenia takesimana is an endemic plant found only in Korea, especially on Ulleung Island. The leaves and roots of D. takesimana have been used as food, forage, and oriental medicine. Anti-bacterial, anti-inflammation, antioxidant, and α-glucosidase inhibition biological activities have been reported in the plant's root extract. However, studies concerning the anti-thrombosis activities of D. takesimana are still in the rudimentary stage. In this study, the extracts of the leaf (DT-L), stem (DT-S), and root (DT-R) of D. takesimana were prepared using 70% ethanol, and their anti-thrombosis activities were evaluated. DT-L extracts (0.25 mg/ml) showed strong inhibitions against platelet aggregation, comparable to aspirin, with strong radical scavenging activities. Furthermore, the DT-L extract did not show any RBC hemolysis up to 1 m/ml. The ant-coagulation and antioxidant activities of the DT-S extract were ignorable. While the DT-R extract showed inhibitions against thrombin and blood coagulation factors, it also showed strong platelet aggregation. This is a first report of the anti-thrombosis activities of D. takesimana, and our results suggest that DT-L could be developed as a valuable bioresource for high value-added products.

The nitrogen fertilization effect on growth characteristics and isoflavone content was investigated in this study, and isoflavone analyzed by HPLC with photodiode array (PDA) detector and reverse-phase $C_{18}$ column. Fertilization levels were no-fertilization, no nitrogen, 50% decreased in nitrogen, standard and 50% increased in nitrogen fertilization. The 50% increased nitrogen fertilization showed the highest growth characteristics then other fertilization level and the number of pod and seed showed maximum value 31.9 and 72.3, respectively, and seed yield was 2,460 kg/ha. During growth stages, isoflavone content in leaf, stem and root of soybean plants decreased to R5 stage then increased to R7 stage. Isoflavone content according to various nitrogen fertilization condition, in case of none fertilization, no nitrogen, 50% decreased nitrogen fertilization showed higher value than those of standard and 50% increased nitrogen fertilization levels. Aglycon content among the isoflavone isomers showed much higher in plant than in seed. The highest isoflavone content was found in the root of soybean plant parts. Isoflavone content of seed was higher in none, no nitrogen, 50% decreased nitrogen than those of standard and 50% increased nitrogen fertilization.
Cellular glass foam (CGE), the reprocessed glass, has a possibility as a component of vegetative propagation media of floricultural crops due to the its excellent air and water permeability, similar to that of perlite. An experiment was conducted to evaluate the rooting and growth thereafter of Kalanchoe blossfeldiana ‘Gold Strike’in media containing various volume ratios of granular rockwool, peat-moss, CGF and perlite. The particle size of CGF and perlite was 2.0~4.0mm and 1.2~4.0mm, respectively. Cuttings were rooted in a fog tunnel with a mean temperature of 18.2$^{\circ}C$ and RH of 66.7% under a long day regime (14 h per day light period). Height, length of the longest root, stem diameter, no. of leaves, leaf area, percentage of rooted cuttings, shoot and root fresh weights, shoot and root dry weights, total chlorophyll concentration and physicochemical properties were measured. Cuttings rooted 100% in all treatments. Physicochemical properties in CGF and perlite-containing media showed little differences. The growth of rooted plants in the CGF-containing media was similar or rather superior to that in perlite-containing media. Consequently, CGF has a possibility as a vegetative propagation medium of Kalanchoe. To make wider commercial use of CGF, more demonstrative experiments and analyses are necessary.

Background: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of NaCl concentration on the photosynthetic parameters, chlorophyll fluorescence and growth characteristics of Crepidiastrum sonchifolium. Methods and Results: As treatments, we subjected C. sonchifolium plants to four different concentrations of NaCl (0, 50, 100 and 200 mM). We found that the photosynthetic parameters maximum photosynthesis rate (PNmax), net apparent quantum yield (Φ), maximum carboxylation rate (Vcmax), and maximum electron transport rate (Jmax) were significantly reduced at an NaCl concentration greater than 100 mM. In contrast, there was an increase in water-use efficiency with increasing NaCl concentration, although in terms of growth performances, leaf dry weight, root dry weight, stem length, and total dry weight all decreased with increasing NaCl concentration. Furthermore, leakage of electrolytes, as a consequence of cell membrane damage, clearly increased in response to an increase in NaCl concentration. Analysis of the polyphasic elevation of chlorophyll a fluorescence transients (OKJIP) revealed marked decrease in flux ratios (ΦPO, ΨO and ΦEO) and the PIabs, performance index in response to treatment with 200 mM NaCl, thereby reflectings the relatively reduced state of photosystem II. This increase in fluorescence could be due to a reduction in electron transport beyond Q-A. We thus found that the photosynthetic parameters, chlorophyll fluorescence and growth characteristics of C. sonchifolium significantly increased in response to treatment with 200 mM NaCl. Conclusions: Collectively, the findings of this study indicate that C. sonchifolium shows relatively low sensitivity to NaCl stress, although photosynthetic activity was markedly reduced in plants exposed to 200 mM NaCl.
This experiment was carried out to investigate the possibility of practical use of intermittent soaking system(ISS) in hydroponicaly growing tomato. There were four treatments which were NFT, Aeroponics, and ISS with 10 and 15 minute soaking intervals. 1. Plant height is highest in NFT, but main root length is longest in ISS. While stem diameter and leaf number were not significantly difference. 2. Fresh and dry weight were heavier in NFT than those of other systems at early growth stage, but the heavier in ISS system, the growth more develop. 3. In 43 days after treatment, the number of flowerlet was largest in aeroponics, and then ISS and NFT in order. Fruit weight per plant was also heaviest in aeroponics. 4. Average yield per plant were 1929.1g in aeroponics, 1475.2g in ISS with 10 minute soaking interval, 1276.2g in NFT and 1084.8g in ISS with 15 minute soaking interval. 5. Average fruit number per plant were 11.0 in aeroponics, 9.7 in NFT, 8.3 in ISS with 15 minute soaking interval, and 7.7 in ISS with 10 minute soaking interval. Average fruit weight were 192.9g in aeroponics, 172.4g in ISS with 10 minute soaking interval, 134.0g in NFT and 126.0g in ISS with 15 minute soaking interval. 6. Average fruit length was longer in aeroponics and ISS with 10 minute soaking interval than in the NFT and ISS with 15 minute soaking interval. Average fruit width was similarly wider in NFT, aeroponics and ISS with 10 minute soaking interval than in ISS with 15 minute soaking interval.

This study was carried out to determine total contents of phenol and flavonoid in common and tartary buckwheat for the purpose of developing new kind of functional food with buckwheat materials. Total content of phenol and flavonoid in seeds of tartary buckwheat were higher than that of common buckwheat. It showed same tendency in groats and hulls. Total content of phenol and flavonoid in groats showed higher than hulls in tartary buckwheat while those of hulls was a little higher than groats in common buckwheat seed. Rutin content in common buckwheat was higher in odor of the hulls (25.2 mg/100 g)>dehulled seed(19.8 mg/100 g)>groats (12.8mg/100 g). But tartary buckwheat was higher in oder of the groats(2042.1 mg/100 g)>dehulled seed (1375.8 mg/100 g)>hulls(138.7 mg/100 g). Flavanol content in dehulled seeds of the tartary and common buckwheat did not show the difference. However, flavanol contents in leaf, stem and spouts of tartary buckwheat were respectively higher than in those of common. Among the flavanols, catechin content was highest in all plant parts of their buckwheat and also was higher in odor of epicatechin>epicatechingallate. However, epicatechingallate content in sprouts of both buckwheat species was about 30-40 times higher than seeds.
This study was conducted to find out the effect of paclobutrazol 0.6G and flurprimido 50wp application at 40 days before heading on the characters related with lodging and the growth and yield of paddy rice plants in 1983. The culm length were shortened by paclobutrazol and flurprimido applications and high level of suppression was observed in the 3rd to 5th internodes. Paclobutrazol caused thiner internode and thicker wall of internode than the untreated control, however flurprimido caused thicker wall of internode without change of internode diameter. The breaking weight of lower internode was higher by flurprimido application than those by the untreated control and paclobutrazol application. The lodging indexes effected by both chemicals were remarkably decreased, and also the field lodging was not observed. The leaf area indexes effected by paclobutrazol and flurprimido applications were increased because of the increasing of tillers and green leaves per stem in spite of shortening of lead blades. Paclobutrazol and flurprimido application out-yielded significantly the untreated control lodged at grain filling stage. However in conditions of untreated with no lodging, the yields of these treatments were significantly less than that of untreated control.
This study was conducted to provide the basic information on safflower collections and to identify the variations which could be utilized in safflower breeding programs. The agronomic characteristics was used to clarify the genetic relationships among safflower collections and to classify them into distint genetic groups. There were 21 early maturing collections with less than 80 days in number of days from planting to flowering. The number of primary and secondary branches ranged ${3.8{\sim}14.8\;and\;0{\sim}26.9}$, respectively, and two collections, IT201434 and IT202723, were found to be high branch types. The 101 safflower collections were classified into 11 groups based on the complete linkage cluster analysis using agronomic characteristics. The I, II, III, IV, IX, X and ? groups included the 25%, 33%, 14%, 8%, 2%, 1% and 1% of the collections, respectively. All the collections in the group III were Korean landraces. The collections in group X could be characterized as early emergence, late flowering and high yield components such as the number of capitula per plant, number of seeds per capitula and seed weight per plant. The number of capitula per plant and seed weight per plant, i.e., the two main yield components, had the highly significant positive correlations with stem diameter, number of the primary branches, number of the secondary branches, number of leaves and leaf length.

Two field experiments were carried out in 2002 to evaluate effects of the sizes of tubers produced through a wick-based hydroponics on growth and yield of seed potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L. 'Dejima'). Nine sizes of seed tubers (<1, 1~3, 3~5, 5~7, 7~10, 10~20, 20~30, 30~50, and 50~80 g) were used in spring crop. In fall crop, however, tubers except for the 1 g and 50~80 g wereused with tubers 7 and 15 g produced through aeroponics. Emergence rate greatly increased as tuber size was increased up to 10~20 g and then leveled off in both croppings. The number of days from planting to emergence in spring crop was about 34 days regardless of tuber size, while that in fall crop decreased from 34 to 16 days as tuber size increased from 1~3 to 30~50 g. The number of stems per plant, stem length and diameter, and leaf size tended to increase with tuber size. As the seed tuber size increased up to 10~20 g, the number of tubers per plant, average tuber weight, total and seed tuber yields linearly increased and then slowly increased with seed tuber size. Total and seed potato yields were not significantly different between tubers produced through a wick-based hydroponics and an aeroponics when similar sized tubers were planted in the fall cropping.
