  • This study were evaluated the corrosion threshold reached at steel reinforcement in latex modified concrete(LMC). Accelerated testing was accomplished to the evalate the diffusion coefficient of LMC mix, and the time dependent constants of diffusion. Also, average chloride diffusion coefficient was estimated. From the average chloride ion diffusion coefficient, the time which critical chloride contents at depth of reinforcement steel was estimated. Test results indicated that the corrosion threshold reached at reinforcement in LMC are effected on the mix proportion factor including latex content, and water-cement ratio.

  • Recently, the disposal of used vehicle tires is a big social problem because the amount of used vehicle tires has been increased with development of' automobile industry. Many researches have been made on the recycling of used vehicle tires in the various fields of industry as well as construction industry. When the crumb rubber made of vehicle tires is mixed in cement concrete and mortar, it is indicated that the adhesive strength of interface between the crumb rubber and cement hydrates is very low. The purpose of this study is to improve the fundamental properties by increasing of the adhesion strength of styrene-butadiene rubber(SF3R) latex coated crumb rubber in ; cement mortar. SBR-modified mortar using crumb rubber is also tested as the same method. From the test results, the cement mortar using SBR latex coated crumb rubber have a good fundamental properties compared with that using uncoated crumb rubber. The mechanical properties of SBR-modified mortar using crumb rubber with polymer-cement ratios of 10% are also improved.

  • The autogenous shrinkage of high-performance concrete, including very-early strength latex-modified concrete(VES-LMC), is generally bigger than that of normal strength concrete because of the low water/cement ratio, high binder contents, and usage of superplasticizer. Mix. proportion of VES-LMC has low water/cement ratio(0.38), high cement content(390kg/m$^3$), and aid of latex(15% of cement weight). Thus, these factors of VES-LMC, rapid water self-dissipation and evaporation within 3 hours of concrete placement would increase the autogenous shrinkage. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the early-age shrinkage, thermal deformation and autogenous shrinkages of VES-LMC with retarder contents(retarder solids-cement ratio, by weight) using to secure working time in field. The experimental results showed that retarder contents do not affect of the maximum hydration temperature. Early-age expansion of VES-LMC was mostly caused by thermal expansion and partly by autogenous expansion. The autogenous shrinkage is decreased by increasing the retarder contents within this study. On the other hand, the usage of retarder should be decided carefully considering the field conditions because an excessive usage of retarder can cause handful early-age expansion.

  • The effects of slag content and polymer-binder ratio on the strength properties of autoclaved SBR-modified concretes using ground granulated blast-furnace slag(slag) and a styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) latex are examined. As a result, the compressive and tensile strengths of the autoclaved SBR-modified concretes using slag increase with increasing slag content, and reach a maximum at a slag content 40%, and increase with increasing polymer-binder ratio. In particular, the autoclaved SBR-modified concretes with a slag content of 40% provide about three times higher tensile strength than unmodified concretes. Such high strength development is attributed to the high tensile strength of SBR polymer and the improved bond between cement hydrates and aggregates because of the addition of SBR latex.

  • A series of 15 reinforced concrete beams was tested to explore the effects of polymer repair on damaged beams. The key parameters for this study were the repair materials, repair methods, repair depths and repair locations. The repaired specimens failed by a typical flexural mode, showing minor interface failure. The results show that epoxy, polyester resins and latex modified cementitous mortars are effective for repairing the concrete beams. The results also show that the depth and the location of the repair do not change significantly the flexural preformance of the repaired beams.

  • Recently, there is a growing trend in the United States toward replacing latex additives in polymer-modified cement mortars with redispersible polymer powders. This movement is relatively new in the U.S. but is further advanced in Europe due to the more extensive use of cement and concrete in residential construction. Hitherto, in Korea - there is a very diminutive movement towards this growing trend. Thus, there is limited availability of data on redispersible polymer powders. This study investigates the effectiveness of redispersible polymer powder on improvement of the mechanical properties of modified mortar. It was concluded from the results of the experiments that the size of the dispersed polymer particles, variations in glass transition points (Tg), and variations in minimum film formation temperature (MFT) influenced the strength development of the modified mortars, and optimum strength in modified mortars using redispersible powders can be achieved when the Tg which accounts for the degree of powder flexibility is considered.

  • A series of 15 reinforced concrete beams was tested to evaluate the flexural performance of the repaired RC beams. the key parameters for this study were the repair materials, polymer/cementitious materials, in addition to the strengthening material, steel plates and carbon fiber sheets. The repaired specimens failed by a typical flexural mode. showing minor interface failure. The results show that epoxy, polyester resins and latex modified cementitous mortars are effective for repairing the concrete beams. However, the flexural preformance of the strengthened beams are varied depending on the repaired materal.

  • The Purpose of this study is to clarify the effect of the monomer ratio on properties of the polymer-modified mortars using methyl methacrylate-butyl acrylate latexes, and to obtain basic data necessary to develop appropriate latexes for cement modifiers. This paper deals with the effect of the monomer ratio on the typical properties of polymer-modified mortars with methyl methacrylate-butyl acrylate latexes. The polymer latex-modified mortars are prepared with 5, 10, IS and 20% of polymer cement ratio respectively, and properties of modified mortars such as water absorption, compressive and flexural strengths, chloride-ion penetration depth are tested. The test results indicate that the monomer ratio is very important factors to characterize the strength properties of polymer-modified mortars, but the water absorption and chloride-ion penetration depth are influenced by polymer-cement ratio rather than monomer ratios.
