Constitutive equations for polymer mole and rubbers: Lessons from the $20^{th}$ century

  • Refinements of classical theories for entangled or crosslinked polymeric systems have led to incommensurable models for rubber networks and polymer melts, contrary to experimental evidence, which suggests a great deal of similarity. Uniaxial elongation and compression data of linear and branched polymer melts as well as of crosslinked rubbers were analyzed with respect to their nonlinear strain measure. This was found to be the result of two contributions: (1) affine orientation of network strands, and (2) isotropic strand extension. Network strand extension is caused by an increasing restriction of lateral movement of polymer chains due to deformation, and is modelled by a molecular stress function which in the tube concept of Doi and Edwards is the inverse of the relative tube diameter. Up to moderate strains, $f^2$ is found to be linear in the average stretch for melts as well as for rubbers, which corresponds to a constant tube volume. At large strains, rubbers show maximum extensibility, while melts show maximum molecular tension. This maximum value of the molecular stress function governs the ultimate magnitude of the strain-hardening effect of linear and long-chain branched polymer melts in extensional flows.

  • The purpose of this study is to experimentally investigate the strength and ductility of reinforced high strength concrete columns under uniaxial load and several test variables. To do this, we have conducted tests on thirteen 20$\times$20$\times$60cm specimens with 8 and 12 longitudinal steel bars subjected to monotonic uniaxial compression. The main variables considered in this test are the configuration of ties, the space the ties, the diameter of ties and yield strength of ties. The results indicate that the strength and the ductility of reinforced high strength concrete columns have been influenced on these variables except yield strength of ties. Judging from test results, real stress of ties at peak concrete stress is suitable variable than yield strength of ties for estimation of the strength gain factor(Ks).

  • Collision scenario was 12 cases considering gate location, water level and lateral location of collision etc. And then, analysis result of trunnion by collision loads (reservoir side gate). Compressive fracture may not occur because the maximum compressive stress of concrete is below the allowable compressive strength. but, it is possible to appear some local crack because the maximum tensile stress exceed the tensile strength.

Finite element modeling of rolled steel shapes subjected to weak axis bending

  • Point bending is often used for cambering and curving structural steel girders. An analytical solution, applicable in the elasto-plastic range only, that relates applied loads to the desired curve was recently developed for inducing horizontal curves using four-point bending. This solution does not account for initial residual stresses and geometric imperfections built-in hot-rolled sections. This paper presents results from a full-scale test on a hot-rolled steel section curved using four-point bending. In parallel, a numerical analysis, accounting for both initial geometric imperfections and initial residual stresses, was carried out. The models were validated against the experimental results and a good agreement for lateral offset and for strain in the elasto-plastic and post-plastic ranges was achieved. The results show that the effect of initial residual stresses on deformation and strain is minimal. Finally, residual stresses due to cold bending calculated from the numerical analysis were assessed and a revised stress value for the service load design of the curved girder is proposed.

  • Stress variation due to size variation and the eccentricity of ring type tensile specimen was analyzed by FLAC program. To get the stable tensile strength the ratio of inner to outer ring diameter should be within a certain range. Diameter ratio of 0.3 was suggested to be adequate. It seemed to be difficult to determine the tensile strength because of stress distortion if eccentricity exceeded home limit. To limit the error in 10%, lateral and axial eccentricity was analyzed to be in the limits of 3% and 10%, respectively.

  • The diesel engine and reduction gear combination is one of the common propulsion system in a naval vessel. Since the diesel engine has torsional vibration caused by reciprocating motion of the mass and gas pressure force of the cylinder, high cycle torsional fatigue can be occurred. Therefore, ROK navy restricts the maximum stress of the propulsion shaft according to MIL G 17859D. In this paper, the root cause for the failure of the diesel engine and reduction gear connecting shaft occurred in typical naval vessel is investigated based on the measured bending and torsional moment according to MIL G 17859D procedure.

  • In this study, the joint part of non-welding composite pile is investigated by a three dimensional finite element analysis. Special attention is given to the overall stress distribution under lateral, axial and tensional load conditions. Through comparisons with allowable stress of materials, a simple method is proposed to estimate the ultimate load condition of joint part. The appropriate design method is suggested and highlighted through the numerical analysis.

  • The whole wall system behaves as one section because single walls composing irregular wall are connected to each other. Although stress of a single wall is affected to the connected wall under lateral load, the stress is not transferred to whole sections and is concentrated on particular part of the wall as well. Therefore these walls can be divided into the effective and ineffective section. The purpose of this study is to compare design result of irregular wall using codes and previous studies on an effective width of the wall and to analyze reduction of the longitudinal bar of irregular wall.

Harmony search algorithm for optimum design of steel frame structures: A comparative study with other optimization methods

  • In this article, a harmony search algorithm is presented for optimum design of steel frame structures. Harmony search is a meta-heuristic search method which has been developed recently. It is based on the analogy between the performance process of natural music and searching for solutions of optimization problems. The design algorithms obtain minimum weight frames by selecting suitable sections from a standard set of steel sections such as American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) wide-flange (W) shapes. Stress constraints of AISC Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) and AISC Allowable Stress Design (ASD) specifications, maximum (lateral displacement) and interstorey drift constraints, and also size constraint for columns were imposed on frames. The results of harmony search algorithm were compared to those of the other optimization algorithms such as genetic algorithm, optimality criterion and simulated annealing for two planar and two space frame structures taken from the literature. The comparisons showed that the harmony search algorithm yielded lighter designs for the design examples presented.
