To investigate the effects of independent suspension technology(IST) of hiking boot on the stability and load of foot, eight participants performed medial and lateral drop landing from 33.4cm height and 85cm distance to uneven surface while wearing normal & IST hiking boots. For the stability of foot during the drop landing, the balance angle & suspension angle and rearfoot angle was analyzed using high-speed video analysis. Also kinetic analysis using the force plate and insole pressure measurement was conducted to analyze vertical & breaking ground reaction force and pressure distribution. Not only the balance angle & suspension angle but also rearfoot angle was improved with IST boots for lateral drop landing. These results indicate the IST boots may have the suspension function which keeps the foot to be stable during landing. However the IST boots did not show any effect for medial landing. This might be related to the hardness of medial part of outsole. Therefore the softer outsole of medial part could be recommended. Furthermore the impact force & breaking force and insole pressure were reduced with IST boot. These results means that IST boot has not only cushioning effect but also good grip effect. Therefore the hiking boots applied the independent suspension function may help to reduce fatigue and prevent injury such as ankle sprain in hiking on uneven surface.
Effects of the circular and non-circular pad shapes on self-alignment in BGA soldering are predicted using Surface Evolver, and the calculated results are compared with experimental data. While the pad shape has minor effects on self-alignment in the vertical direction, self-alignment in the lateral direction depends on the pad direction and length ratio of the non-circular pad. Larger restoring force is obtained in the minor-axis direction than the major-axis direction, which suggests a possibility of reducing misalignment in the specific direction. The restoring force of the circular pad is between those of the non-circular pad in the major and minor-axis directions. The calculated results of Surface Evolver show reasonably good agreements with experimental data using the shear loading system.
The advance in technology of the CWR in Korea has led the establishment of the CWR on the sharp curve (i.e. less than R=600m). As thermit welding used in the sharp-curved construction site is carried out on the curve track, it is difficult to adjust a curve shape accurately and these difficulties have occurred in a number of cases. Therefore, in this study, the lateral buckling analysis of CWR track was carried out considering the actual ballast resistance force. In addition, the cant and vertical resistance force in ballast was considered in order to predict the initial behaviour of bucking in track under the more accurate method.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the GRF(ground reaction force) parameters according to the shoes's heel heights and ground landing distances during downward stairs on bus. Participants selected as subject were consisted of young and healthy women(n=9, mean age: $21.30{\pm}0.48$ yrs, mean height: $164.00{\pm}3.05cm$, mean body mass: $55.04{\pm}4.41kg$, mean BMI: $20.47{\pm}1.76kg/m^2$, mean foot length: $238.00{\pm}5.37mm$). They were divided into 2-types of shoe's heel heights(0 cm/bare foot, 9 cm) and also were divides into downward stairs with 3 types of landing distance(20 cm, 35 cm, 50 cm). A one force-plate was used to collect the GRF(AMTI, USA) data from the sampling rate of 1000 Hz. The GRF parameters analyzed were consisted of the medial-lateral GRF, anterior-posterior GRF, vertical GRF, loading rate, Center of Pressure(${\Delta}COPx$, ${\Delta}COPy$, COP area) and Dynamic Postural Stability Index(MLSI, APSI, VSI, DPSI) during downward stairs on bus. Medial-lateral GRF and vertical GRF didn't show significant differences statistically according to the shoe's heel heights and landing distance, but 9 cm shoes heel showed higher vertical GRF than that of 0 cm bare foot in landing distance of 50 cm. Also anterior-posterior GRF didn't show significant difference statistically according to the shoe's heel heights, but landing distance of 20 cm showed higher than that of landing distances of 35 cm and 50 cm in anterior-posterior GRF. Loading rate didn't show significant difference statistically according to the landing distance, but 9 cm shoe's heel showed higher than that of 0 cm bare foot during downward stairs. The ${\Delta}COPy$ and COP area didn't show significant differences statistically according to the shoe's heel heights and landing distance, but 0 cm bare foot showed higher than that of 9 cm shoe's heel in ${\Delta}COPx$. Dynamic Postural Stability Index(MLSI, APSI, VSI, DPSI) didn't show significant differences statistically according to the landing distance, but 9 cm shoe's heel showed decreased value than that of 0 cm bare foot in dynamics balance. Considering the above, parameters of GRF showed different characteristics according to the shoe's heel heights and ground landing distances during downward stairs on bus.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between ground reaction force (GRF) and attack time according to the position of hand segments during counter attack in Kendo. Method: The participants consisted of 10 kendo athletes (mean age: $21.50{\pm}1.95yr$, mean height: $175.58{\pm}5.02cm$, mean body weight: $70.96{\pm}9.47kg$) who performed standard head strikes (A) and counter attack with a preferred hand position of +10 cm (B), 0 cm (C), and -10 cm (D). One force-plate (AMTI-OR-7., USA) was used to collect GRF data at a sample rate of 1,000 Hz. The variables analyzed were the attack time, medial-lateral GRF, anterior-posterior GRF (AP GRF), peak vertical force (PVF), and loading rate. Results: The total attack time was shorter in types A and C than in types C and D. The AP GRF, PVF, and loading rate had significantly higher forces in types C and D than in types A and C. The attack time (bilateral and unilateral leg support and total) was positively correlated with the GRF variables (vertical GRF and loading rate) during the counter attack in Kendo (r = 0.779 [$R^2=0.607$], p < 0.001). Conclusion: The positions of the hand segments can be changed by various conditions of the opponent in Kendo competitions; however, the position preferred by an individual can promote the successful ratio of the counter attack.
Now that problems with force-based seismic design have been clearly identified, design is inclined toward displacement-based methods. One such widely used method is Direct-Displacement-Based Design (DDBD). Yet, one of the shortcomings of DDBD is considering higher-mode amplification of story shear, moments, and displacements using equations obtained from limited parametric studies of regular planar frames. In this paper, a different approach to account for higher-mode effects is proposed. This approach determines the lateral secant stiffness of the building frames that fulfill the allowable inter-story drift without exceeding the desired story displacements. Using the stiffness, an elastic response spectrum analysis is carried out to determine elastic higher-mode force effects. These force effects are then combined with DDBD-obtained first-mode force effects using the appropriate modal superposition method so that design can be performed. The proposed design procedure is verified using Nonlinear Time History Analysis (NTHA) of twelve planar frames in four categories accounting for mass and stiffness irregularity along the height. In general, the NTHA response outputs compared well with the allowable limits of the performance objective. Thus, it fulfills the aim of minimizing the use of NTHA for planar frame buildings, thereby saving computational resources and effort.
In this work, we fabricated oxide on an n-type silicon substrate through local anodic oxidation (LAO) using atomic force microscopy (AFM). The resulting oxide thickness was measured and its correlation with load force, scan speed and applied voltage was analyzed. The surface oxide layer was stripped using a buffered oxide etch. Ohmic contacts were created by applying silver paste on the silicon substrate back face. LAO was performed at approximately 70% humidity. The oxide thickness increased with increasing the load force, the voltage, and reducing the scan speed. We confirmed that LAO/AFM can be used to create both lateral and, to some extent, vertical shapes and patterns, as previously shown in the literature.
There is a certain limit to reproduce phenomena between the real vehicle and road, since the existing methods to verify durability of the wheel are mostly uni-axial tests. And the change of durability of the wheel can't be predicted since these tests don't consider the camber angle and lateral force as important factors. In this paper, the FE models of the wheel-tire and drum are created. Then, the vertical and lateral loads are applied to wheel-tire assembly and the camber angle is applied by inclining the wheel-tire assembly to the drum. Based on the analysis result, the crack position is predicted to be created in the body of the wheel. The variation of the stress according to the camber angle is verified and the maximum spot of the stress changes continually.
