A scanning stereo-PIV system was developed to measure the three-dimensional distribution of three-component velocity in a turbulent round jet. A laser light beam produced by a high repetition rate YLF pulse laser was expanded vertically by a cylindrical lens to form a laser light sheet. The light sheet is scanned in a direction normal to the sheet by a flat mirror mounted on an optical scanner, which is controlled by a programmable scanner controller. Two high-speed mega-pixel resolution C-MOS cameras captured the particle images illuminated by the light sheet, and stereoscopic PIV method was adopted to acquire the 3D-3C-velocity distribution of turbulent round jet in an octagonal tank filled with water. The jet Reynolds number was set at Re=1000 and the streamwise location of the measurement was fixed at approximately x = 40D. Time evolution of three-dimensional vortical structure, which is identified by vorticity, is visualized. It revealed that the existence of a group of hairpin-like vortex structures was quite evident around the rim of the shear layer of the jet. Turbulence statistics shows good agreement with the previous data, and divergence of a filtered (unfiltered) velocity vector field was $7\%\;(22\%)$ of root-me an-squared vorticity value.

This study compares transformation algorithms for co-registration of terrestrial laser scan data. Pair-wise transformation which is used for transformation of scan data from more than two different view accumulates errors. ICP algorithm commonly used for co-registration between scan data needs initial geometry information. And it is difficult to co-register simultaneously because of too many control points when managing scan at the same time. Therefore, this study perform global registration technique using matching points. Matching points are extracted automatically from intensity image by SIFT and global registration is performed using GP analysis. There are advantages for operation speed, accuracy, automation in suggested global registration algorithm. Through the result from it, registration algorithms can be developed by considering accuracy and speed.
Currently, there is a considerable interest in 3D object reconstruction using terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) systems due to their ability to automatically generate a considerable amount of points in a very short time. To fully map an object, multiple scans are captured. The different scans need to be registered with the help of the point cloud in the overlap regions. To guarantee reliable registration, the scans should have large overlap ratio with good geometry for the estimation of the transformation parameters among these scans. The objective of this paper is to propose a registration method that relaxes/eliminates the overlap requirement through the utilization of photogrammetrically reconstructed features. More specifically, a point-based procedure, which utilizes non-conjugate points along corresponding linear features from photogrammetric and TLS data, will be used for the registration. The non-correspondence of the selected points along the linear features is compensated for by artificially modifying their weight matrices. The paper presents experimental results from simulated and real datasets to illustrate the feasibility of the proposed procedure.

Recently, remodeling construction project has been prevalently conducted in major city areas in Korea. However, remodeling construction project has a difficulty in conducting a construction because of non-existing drawing or lack of drawing information. To solve these problems, modeling techniques by using reverse engineering have been widely studied in other industries such as aerospace and automobile industry. But reverse engineering techniques have not been used in remodeling construction projects because those technology haven't supplied less accuracy during required time for surveying. So, this study suggests optimal method of acquiring accurate 3D laser scanner information for reverse engineering at interior remodeling project.

Nowadays, as-is BIM generation has been popularly adopted in the architecture, engineering, construction and facility management (AEC/FM) industries. In order to generate a 3D as-is BIM of a structural component, current methods require a registration process that merges different sets of point cloud data obtained from multiple locations, which is time-consuming and registration error-prone. To tackle this limitation, this study proposes a registration-free 3D point cloud data acquisition technique for as-is BIM generation. In this study, small-size mirrors that rotate in both horizontal and vertical direction are used to enable the registration-free data acquisition technique. First, a geometric model that defines the relationship among the mirrors, the laser scanner and the target component is developed. Second, determinations of optimal laser scanner location and mirror location are performed based on the developed geometrical model. To validate the proposed registration-free as-is BIM generation technique, simulation tests are conducted on key construction components including a PC slab and a structural wall. The result demonstrates that the registration-free point cloud data acquisition technique can be applicable in various construction elements including PC elements and structural components for as-is BIM generation.

The present study introduces a comparison between 3D R-tree and octree which are noticeable candidates to index large point clouds gathered from a 3D terrestrial laser scanner. A query method, which is to find neighboring points within given distances, was devised for the comparison, and time lapses for the query along with memory usages were checked. From tests conducted on point clouds scanned from a building and a stone pagoda, it was shown that octree has the advantage of fast generation and query while 3D R-tree is more memory-efficient. Both index and leaf capacity were revealed to be ruling factors to get the best performance of 3D R-tree, while the number of level was of oetree.

When a robot navigates in an outdoor environment, a curb or a sidewalk separated from the road can be used as a robust feature. However, most algorithms could detect the curb only in the straight road, and could not detect highly curved corners, ramps, and so on. This paper proposes an algorithm which enables the robot to detect and follow the curbs in various types of roads. In the proposed method, the robot tilts a laser scanner and computes the error between the predicted and the measured distances to the road in front of the robot. Based on this error, the curbs at corners and curves can be classified. It is also difficult to detect a curb near a ramp because of its low height. In this case, the robot also tilts a laser scanner to detect the curb beyond the ramp. Once the robot classifies the road into the curve, corner, ramp, the robot selects the proper navigation strategies depending on the classified road types and is able to continue to detect and follow the curb. The results of a series of experiments show that the robot can stably detect and follows the curb in curves, corners and ramps as well as the straight road.

This study deals with the measurement of reflectivity as well as the distance accuracy with Terrestrial Laser Scanner(TLS) using time of flight methods and near infrared wave length, for a variety of user-made targets. Especially, point clouds' reflection to several targets was measured with Gretag Macbeth il spectrophotometer in the office. And the distance accuracy in comparison to reference distance for TLS performance evaluation, was tested after scanning the user-made targets and measuring the inter-pillars distances over the precise EDM calibration baseline. The results of test was shown that except white resin objects, with approx. 10m and 170m inter-pillar distances, other targets achieved the distance accuracy of several millimeters(mm) with respect to standard distances. Future work should be concentrate on a few parameters influencing on the distance accuracy such as atmospheric correction, instrument correction, the additive constant or zero/index correction, etc.

Multiple strips are required for large area mapping using ALS (Airborne Laser Scanner) system. LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) data collected from the ALS system has discrepancies between strips due to systematic errors of on-board laser scanner and GPS/INS, inaccurate processing of the system calibration as well as boresight misalignments. Such discrepancies deteriorate the overall geometric quality of the end products such as DEM (Digital Elevation Model), building models, and digital maps. Therefore, strip adjustment for minimizing discrepancies between overlapping strips is one of the most essential tasks to create seamless point cloud data. This study implemented area-based matching (ABM) to determine conjugate features for computing 3D transformation parameters. ABM is a well-known method and easily implemented for this purpose. It is obvious that the exact same LiDAR points do not exist in the overlapping strips. Therefore, the term "conjugate point" means that the location of occurring maximum similarity within the overlapping strips. Coordinates of the conjugate locations were determined with sub-pixel accuracy. The major drawbacks of the ABM are sensitive to scale change and rotation. However, there is almost no scale change and the rotation angles are quite small between adjacent strips to apply AMB. Experimental results from this study using both simulated and real datasets demonstrate validity of the proposed scheme.
