  • Sagnac interferometer gyroscopes can be divided into three large generations using starting points of time or highlights of their research. As the first generational Sagnac interferometer, the ring laser gyroscopes have been studied since the 1960s by laser invention, and as the second generational Sagnac interferometer, the fiber optic gyroscopes have been studied since the 1970s by invention of optical fiber for communication. In the latter half of the 1990s, after having confirmed the wave theory of the atom, studies of atomic interferometers were started for a next generation gyroscope application. This paper discusses the operation principles, application, and future prospects of these three generations of Sagnac gyroscopes.

  • We have made an optical device to study the wave optics phenomena, such as image and diffraction pattern, constructive and destructive interference, by direct operation of laser beam and optical lenses. It consists of laser beam, goniometer, objective lens, intermediate lens, projection lens, CCD system, and computing system. As a result of the performance test, we were able to magnify samples up to 44 times with the resolution of about $5{\mu}m$. It is expected to help EM users understanding more easily principles of transmission electron microscopy (TEM).

  • With the recent advent of various ultrashort pulse lasers, time-resolved laser spectroscopic techniques have been widely recognized as versatile tools to study ultrafast phenomena in many research areas. These techniques are currently being employed not only to study atomic and molecular physics but to characterize the excited state or the carrier dynamics on surfaces of semiconductors, metals and thin layer materials. Also the sweetching speed measurement of ultrafast electro-optic devices using ultrashort laser pulses becomes important in high-speed electronics. Here, some principles of spectroscopic techniques with ps or fs lasers and their applications are summarized briefly.

  • The implementation of rapid prototyping technologies has been developed for automotive engineering by utilizing concurrent engineering principes integrated with slective laser sintering. The Selective Laser Sintering, in which a part is generated in layers form powder using a computer-controlled laser scanning apparatus and power feed system. An over view of the basic principles of SLS Machine operation is given. Binding mechanisms are described for power which becomes thermally activated bye the scanning laser beam; viscous flow and melting of a low-melting-point phase in powder. The production of parts from metal is described, including post processing to improve structural integrity and induce a transformation.

  • We propose a new displacement measurement method using a phase modulation homodyne interferometer and a tunable laser diode as a light source to determine an arbitrary length with a resolution in the order of 10 pm. In the proposed instrument, the displacement of a movable mirror in the interferometer can be converted to a frequency shift of the tunable laser diode. We discuss the principles of the proposed method, the instrumentation, and the experimental results, and compare the proposed method with two commercial displacement sensors. The commercial sensors used are a heterodyne interferometer, the interpolation error of which is also measured, and a capacitive sensor.

  • An Inspection system, composed of sensor head and controller, is presented which is a 3-D laser vision system using principles of optical triangulation for weld quality and chamfer quality. The sensor head id composed of laser diode, micro CCD camera, filter and several optical components. This systems can be used in welding bead and undercut inspection and chamfer quality inspection as well. It is mech more convenient to use and the inspection time is to be greatly shortened compared with conventional inspection method. Furthermore, data saved in controller can be used for statistics afterwards. This system has been begin used in Koje Shipyard of Samsung Heavy Industries and the need is being increased.

  • High performance laser printer requires high speed scanning motor, which can operate up to 40,000 rpm. However, development of high speed scanning motor has been restricted due to the practical problems such as use of high speed bearing, compact circuit design and high cost. In this study, we designed a high speed scanner motor for use on laser scanning unit and discussed some design principles including the reduction method of cogging torque of the motor, development of hemispherical aerodynamic bearing, windage loss estimation, and operating circuit design to reduce noise.

  • Recently, as electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles are widely used, the use of rechargeable batteries is increasing. Electric and hybrid cars are made up of hundreds to thousands of electric cells depending on the car model. And the assembly process of the cells and modules requires a variety of bonding process. Meanwhile, in order to connect several cells in series, Cu used as a cathode and Al of an anode must be bonded. In this paper, the characteristics of Al and Cu metals, laser types, characteristics and principles of welding lasers for welding of Cu and Al electrodes are introduced.
