Introduction Energy-based devices allow for a more rapid and efficient ligation of blood vessels during operations. In the present study, we evaluated the feasibility of a laser as an alternative energy source for the vessel sealing system and determined the optimal condition of laser for an effective vessel sealing through histologic examination. Materials and Methods The arteries (5 mm diameter) harvested from porcine legs were compressed between two glass-slides to eliminate its luminal space and were irradiated with 1,470-nm diode laser under various sealing conditions, including laser power (5-30 W), irradiation time (5 or 10 seconds), and focus mode (focus or defocus). Subsequently, the irradiated vessels were fixed in 4% formaldehyde and then processed to paraffin block. The paraffinized sample was sectioned and stained with hematoxylin and eosin for histological evaluation. Results The extent of tissue change was positively correlated with duration and power of laser. In defocus mode, the irradiated vessels showed sufficient tissue denaturation for sealing effect without severe tissue destruction. Moreover, among the various conditions of irradiation, laser power between 15 and 20 W, as well as exposure time of 5 seconds were appropriate for sealing the blood vessels. Conclusion Adequate power and irradiation duration of laser can render blood vessels to be sealed effectively, although the higher power of laser may be required to cut the vessels.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of Nd:YAG laser irradiation for sensory nerve conduction change. Nd:YAG laser was irradiated to mental region for 5 minutes with the parameters that 10 Hz and 20 Hz of 100 mJ/pulse. Target size of irradiation was 30 mm diameter of circle and target-tip distance was about 10 mm. Therefore, the power density were 212 $mW/cm^2$ and 424 $mW/cm^2$. Sensory nerve conduction was evaluated with $Neurometer^{\circled}$ CPT/C before and after Nd:YAG laser irradiation. As an outcomes, the current perception threshold(CPT) and pain tolerance threshold(PTT) were obtained. We made a comparison of these two values and the results were as follows. 1. There was no significant difference in CPT at 1W, 10 Hz and 2 W, 20 Hz Nd:YAG laser irradiation. 2. There was no significant difference in PTT at 10 Hz, 20 Hz of 100 mJ/pulse Nd:YAG laser. 3. There were no significant differences in CPT and PTT between 1 W, 10 Hz group and 2 W, 20 Hz group. Therefore, We can make a conclusion that Nd:YAG laser irradiation to mental region have no effect on mental nerve conduction in our study model.

The purpose of study was to evaluate the effects of the $CO_2$ laser irradiation on demineralization inhibition and rehardening of human primary tooth enamel by laser fluoresecence measurement. Enamel specimens were made from the human primary teeth. The center spots of the specimens about 2 mm diameter were irradiated by $CO_2$ laser at the conditions of focused continuous or defocused pulsed, 3 or 6 W, for 4 seconds, before or after the demineralization by Coca-Cola for 24 hours at $37^{\circ}C$. The Diagnodent was used to measure the degree of demineralization and rehardening. There was no significant difference between focused continuous and defocused pulsed irradiation. 6W irradiation inhibited the demineralization but 3W did not. 6W irradiation rehardened the demineralized enamel but 3W did partially. The color of enamel was changed to brown to black after 6W irradiation but 3W caused no color change. $CO_2$ laser irradiation showed the effects on demineralization inhibition and rehardening of human priamary tooth enamel, and the laser fluoresecence measurement technique seemed to be a valid evaluation method.

Laser ablation may provide a minimally invasive palliative treatment for pancreatic cancer. The aim of the current study was to assess the feasibility of a 532-nm laser equipped with a cylindrical light diffuser for the treatment of pancreatic cancer. Monolayers of BxPC-3 human pancreatic cancer cell were exposed to 532 nm laser light. Power levels of 5 - 7 W were used to uniformly target the entire cell colonies for 60 and 120 seconds. The cells were incubated for 24 hours after treatment and viabilities were determined by using a MTT assay. Laser ablation was performed by using the cylindrical light diffuser on six pancreatic tumor tissues obtained from pancreatic cancer xenograft mouse models, which were exposed to the 532 nm light at 5W or 7W for 10 to 30 seconds. In the in vitro study, the survival rates of the pancreatic cancer cells were reduced by 6.6% to 98.9% after the treatment, and the survival rates were reduced by increasing laser power and/or irradiation time. In the pancreatic tumor tissues, a homogenous circular ablation zone was observed in all tumors and the ablation distance induced by the laser irradiation showed to be constant from the diffuser to all directions (standard deviation, 0.3 - 1.3 mm). Ablation distance and area increased with increasing laser power and/or irradiation time. The 532 nm laser effectively killed pancreatic cancer cells, and the cylindrical light diffuser was found to be suitable for laser ablation as it provided uniform ablation in pancreatic cancer.

Effects of laser polarization were studied on behaviors of fast electrons produced from an aluminum target irradiated by a solid target irradiated by obliquely incident laser pulses at Bx10$\^$15/ W/cm$^2$. Jet emission of outgoing fast electrons collimated in the polarization direction was observed for the s-polarized laser irradiation, whereas for the p-polarized irradiation, very directional emission of outgoing fast electrons was found close to the normal direction of the target. The behaviors of in-going fast electrons into the target for s- and p-polarized irradiation were also investigated by observing x-ray Bremsstrahlung radiation at the backside of the target.
Physically implanted surface islands of Nano Carbon Tube (NCT) and ${\alpha}-F_2O_3$ particles have been produced on Al-doped ZnO (AZO)/glass surfaces by simple and direct ND:YAG laser beam irradiation. Sheet resistance of the reconstructed surface increased by about 3.6% of over AZO. Minimal surface damage can be repaired by ND:YAG laser beam irradiation in conjunction with proper impurities. Implanted islands of NCT, which are considered to be a good conductive impurity, on AZO increased the sheet resistance by about 1.8%, while implanted islands of ${\alpha}-F_2O_3$, an insulating impurity, on AZO increased sheet resistance by about 129% compared with a laser beam treated AZO. This study provides insight regarding surface implantations of nanowires and micro-circuits, doping effects for semiconductors and optical devices, surface area and impurity effects for catalysis.

Skeletal muscle regeneration is a vital process for various muscle myopathies and muscular adaptation to physiological overload. Angiogenesis is the key event in the process of muscle regeneration, and vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) plays an important role in it. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of GaAlAs(830nm) laser and immunoreactivity of VEGF on angiogenesis after muscle contusion injury. Muscle contusion injury was induced in the triceps surae muscle by dropping a metal bead(31.4g). GaAlAs laser irradiation(power 20 mW, frequency 2000 Hz, treatment time 15 min) was applied directly to the skin of injured muscle daily for seven days. The experimental group I was irradiated immediately by laser after injury, whereas the experimental group II was irradiated after 1 day of injury. The control group was non-irradiated. The results of this study were as follows. 1. In morphological observation, there were no significant changes in experimental and control groups for 7 days. At 3 days, however, the splited muscle fibers were observed in experimental groups, and the muscle atrophy and granular tissue viewed at 7 days in control group. 2. The VEGF was expressed in muscle fiber that located in the interspace between gastrocnemius and soleus muscles. As the time coursed, the immunoreactivity of VEGF also seemed to be strong in the individual muscle fibers. 3. The experimental group I & II showed higher immunoreactivity of VEGF than control group(p<0.05). Then, the experimental group I showed higher than group II especially(p<0.05). These data suggest GaAlAs semiconduct diode laser irradiation(830nm) enhanced angiogenesis in the skeletal muscle induced contusion injury, and immediate laser irradiation after injury promoted the angiogenesis greatly than after 1 day of injury.

The purpose of the present study was to examine the functional recovery of the crushed sciatic nerve of rats after low-power laser irradiation applied to the corresponding segments of the spinal cord. After a crushed injury on the left sciatic nerve in rats. low-power laser irradiation was applied transcutaneously to corresponding segments of the spinal cord immediately after suture the wound by using 2000 mW, 2000Hz, 830 nm CaAIAs(Gallium-aluminum-arsenide) semiconductor diode laser. The laser treatment was performed with 10 minutes daily for 4 successive weeks. Functional recovery was evaluated per weekly following injury by sciatic function index(SFI),using data obtained by walking track analysis. For four weeks after crush injury, experimental group had significantly greater functional improvement than control group(${\alpha}$=0.05). In a experimental group, SFI was significantly increased for three weeks, but control group not increased for two weeks. This study suggests that low-power laser irradiation applied directly to the spinal cord can improve functional recovery of the crushed sciatic nerve in rats.
