The oriental fruit moth (Grapholita molesta Busck) and the peach fruit moth (Carposina sasakii Matsumura) are the most severe insect pests affecting apple orchards in Korea. To prevent an outbreak of these two species and to control these agricultural insect pests, it is important to identify them accurately. However, it is hard to classify them when they were in the larval stage since they tunnel into the apple fruit. In this study, surface structures of the two species of larvae were observed using stereo microscope and scanning electron microscope. Distinct differences between the two species of larvae were found. The prothorax spiracles of oriental fruit moth larvae were approximately twice as large as those of peach fruit moth larvae. The arrangements of subventral setae, located around the proleg, were different between oriental fruit moth and peach fruit moth larvae. Furthermore, subdorsal setae of oriental fruit moth were located next to the spiracle on the 8th abdominal segment, while that of peach fruit moth was located above the spiracle. The identification of the two species of larvae observed in this study was confirmed using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism method. Surface structural differences are intrinsic characteristics for each species of larvae and can easily be identified using stereo microscope. These specificities will be helpful where a large number of field-collected larvae need to be identified routinely in pest control research.
Intake of caffeine during pregnancy can cause retardation of fetal development. Although the significant influence of caffeine on animal development is widely recognized, much remains unknown about its mode of action because of its pleiotropic effects on living organisms. In the present study, by using Caenorhabditis elegans as a model organism, the effects of caffeine on development were examined. Brood size, embryonic lethality, and percent larval development were investigated, and caffeine was found to inhibit the development of C. elegans at most of the stages in a dosage-dependent fashion. Upon treatment with 30 mM caffeine, the majority ($86.1{\pm}3.4%$) of the L1 larvae were irreversibly arrested without further development. In contrast, many of the late-stage larvae survived and grew to adults when exposed to the same 30 mM caffeine. These results suggest that early-stage larvae are more susceptible to caffeine than later-stage larvae. To understand the metabolic responses to caffeine treatment, the levels of expression of cytochrome P450 (cyp) genes were examined with or without caffeine treatment using comparative microarray, and it was found that the expression of 24 cyp genes was increased by more than 2-fold (p < 0.05). Among them, induction of the cyp-35A gene family was the most prominent. Interestingly, depletion of the cyp-35A family genes one-by-one or in combination through RNA interference resulted in partial rescue from early larval developmental arrest caused by caffeine treatment, suggesting that the high-level induction of cyp-35A family genes can be fatal to the development of early-stage larvae.
The energy budget of the larvae of pandalid shrimp, Pandalopsis japonica, reared in the laboratory from zoea to post-larva was investigated. Energy used during the growth of the shrimp larvae was calculated daily for feeding, growth, molting, and metabolism. The total energy used was 16.2 J for the entire larval stage. Molting energy loss was estimated at a total 1.03 J. Energy used for respiration was estimated at a total of 1.85 J. The intake energy by feeding reached a total of 77.69 J. The total sum of energies used by excretion and egestion was 58.61 J. Larvae assimilated 24.57% of ingested food and used 84.91% for somatic growth. The gross growth efficiency ($K_1$) was 22.19% for the entire larval stage, and the net growth efficiency ($K_2$) was 90.31%. Maintenance costs were estimated at 9.69% of assimilated energy for the entire larval stage.

The larvae and juvenile development of haddock Melanogrammus aeglefinus which is significant commercial fish living north Atlantic Ocean are described here. Larvae were reared in laboratory and sampled periodically for developmental study until 67 days after hatching. An increase in total length(TL) of fish indicated continuous growth, described by the growth expression Y=4.07 $e^{0.037}$( $R^{2}$=0.9978). The newly hatched pre-larvae was 4.9 mm in TL with ellipsoid yolk. In 16 days after hatching, larvae attained 6.8 mm in TL, and absorbed the yolk completely to become post-larval stage, but first heterotrophic food could be in 7 days after hatching already. Post-larval stage continued during 16~52 days after hatching with development of organs attachment. In 61 days after hatching with 41.3 mm in TL, the fries became a juvenile stage respectively having small teed lateral line, and a black blotch on the flank same as adults, but chin barbel was not developed yet. It was presumed that haddock changed food and ecological behavior after metamorphosis ken this time.e.
Morphological development of eggs, larvae and juvenile of the sunrise sculpin, Pseudoblennius cottoides were studed in the field and laboratory at the coastal Dolsan-do, Yeosu-shi from October, 2000 to April, 2001 Egg mass of Pseudoblennius cottoides in peribranchial cavity of Halocynthia hilgendorfi, were observed during late fall to winter in the study area. Fertiliged eggs were spherical in shape, demersal, adhesive, transparent and greenwish yellow color, measuring 1.84 mm (1.83-1.87 mm) in diameter. There were numerous and 17 (15-20) various-sized oil globules accounted in the yolk. Granular materials formed a mass in the yolk. Fertiliged eggs hatched at 301 hr 20 min after morula stage. Newly hatched larvae 6.31 mm (6.24-6.37 mm) in total length (TL), had a large yolk. At 3 days after hatching, the larvae, 6.77 mm (6.69-7.14 mm) in TL came out through the excurrent siphon of Halocynthia hilgendorfi. At 13 days after hatching, the larvae 12.59 mm (12.42-12.63 mm) in TL transformed to postlarval stage. At 32 days after hatching, postlarvae of TL 19.18 mm (19.01-19.46 mm) have reached the juvenile stage.
The eggs of Favonigobius gymnauchen attached on the under side of a small stone were collected off Seongsan-eup Cheju-do in August, 2000 to investigate their development of egg, larvae and juveniles. The fertilized eggs were elliptical in shape (mean long axis: 1.50 mm; mean short axis: 0.57 mm) and transparent. There were filaments on one side of the egg membrane. Larvae hatched at 48 hrs 50 mins after morula stage with 25-26 myotomes in $22.8-28.5^{\circ}C\;(mean\;24.7^{\circ}C).$ The newly hatched larvae were 2.31-2.49 mm (mean 2.37 mm n=10) in total length (TL) and their mouth and anus were already opened. Their melanophores were appeared on the over gas globule, around anus and the part of caudal peduncle with 24-25 myotomes. At 4-5 days after hatching. larvae attained 3.81-4.07 mm (mean 3.96 mm, n=10) in TL and their yolk sac was completely absorbed. They began to eat rotifer and transformed to postlarvae stage. At 14 days after hatching, postlarvae attained 6.17-6.31 mm (mean 6.21 mm, n=10) in TL and their caudal notocord was flexed $45^{\circ}$ upward. At 24 days after hatching, postlarvae attained 8.69-9.10 mm (mean 8.87 mm, n=10) in TL had reached the juvenile stage. All fins were formed with the complete set of fin rays with the following counts: dorsal fin rays IV-I, 9-10; anal fin rays I, 9; pectoral fin rays 17; ventral fin rays: I, 5; caudal fin rays: 9+8= 17.
The effects of temperatures, salinities and diets on the larvae of the fresh water prawn, Macrobrchium koreana were studied. Survival rates were decreased with increasing salinity concentrations, and the second larval stages were almost died in 48 hours in over $40\%$ sea weter$(13.7\%)$. The intermolt duration of the each stage were shortend with increasing water temperature, and the optimum temperatures of the larvae were from $22^{\circ}C\~26^{\circ}C$ The larvae fed with the meat of Tapes japonicus showed the highest survival rate. When the larvae were fed with the eggyolk powder, all the lauvae died before fourth zoea. Under starved condition moltings were continued up to third zoea.
In autumn season residual period of nicotine is observed in the larval duration, weight of molting larvae at the various stages, percentage of delayed molting larvae, and survival rate up to the 3rd stage from the 1st season to the 3rd season and up to the stage for four seasons, respectively. Mulberry tree is planted in pot from June 18, 1973 to August 4, 1973 and placed every other row between tobacco variety of Hicks cultivated in mulching system and control is prepared in the Sericultural Experiment Station, placing in the every ridge of mulberry field with the four seasons ; 5 day isolation (1st season), 15 day isolation (2nd season), 25 day isolation (3rd season), and 50 day isolation (4th season). 1) 1st and 3nd instar larvae fed with the tobacco stained mulberry leaf has longer larval duration for the four seasons, as compared with those of the control, increasing 12% in index with 28 hours, 17% in index with 37 hours, 23% in index with 50 hours, 17% in index with 43 hours from the 1st season to the fourth season and the 3rd to the 4th instar larvae, increasing 18% in index with 55 hours. 2) 2nd instar molting larvae, 3rd instar molting larvae from the 1st to the 4th season and 4th instar molting larvae at the 4th season decrease their larval weight respectively, as compared with the control. 3) Percentage of delayed molting larvae from the 3rd stage to the 4th stage goes up higher than that of the control in the End larval stage at the 3rd to the 4th season, in the 3rd larval stage at the 1st, the End, and the 4th season, and in the 4th larval stage at the 4th season, respectively. 4) Survival rates in the 2nd larval stage at the 2nd season to the 4th season, in the 3rd larval stage at the 1st to the 4th season, and in the 4th larval stage at the 4th season respectively are higher than that in the control.

Eleven individual larvae (3.6-8.0 mm notochord length, NL) were collected from the southern East Sea of Korea in July, 2010, and the adjacent Sea of Jeju Island in August, 2011. Five individuals were identified using mitochondrial DNA cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) sequences (494 base pairs). All were identified as Auxis rochei, their mtCOI sequences being consistent with those of adult A. rochei (d=0.000), followed by Auxis thazard (d=0.027). In terms of morphology, A. rochei larvae showed a preflexion stage of 4.8 mm NL, but a flexion stage between 5.2-6.2 mm NL, and subsequently a postflexion stage between 6.6-8.0 mm NL. During the larval stage, A. rochei differed from A. thazard in having no (or few) melanophores in the lateral caudal region.
The effects of insect growth regulator Dimilin which interfere with the synthesis of chitin in the cuticle of insect larvae were investigated at various concentrations using the crab larvae of Hemigrapsus sanguineus. The larvae were cultured at control, 0.5, 1, 5 and 10 $\mu g$ Dimilin solutions and three replicate experiments were carried out to give correct analysis. Significant differences in percent mortality have occurred between control and 10$\mu g$ when the larvae were exposed to Dimilin whereas no differences were found between 5 and 10$\mu g$ Dimilin concentrations. If lethal concentration is defined as concentration at which less than 10 percent of crab larvae reach to the last zoeal stage from hatching it can be concluded that insect growth regulator Dimilin is lethal to the larvae of Hemigrapsus sanguineus at 5 and 10$\mu g$ Dimilin.
