  • Taking advantage of geographical position of Korea located on the main route of world-wide service, Port Logistics Industry can be strategic industry which secures international competitiveness necessary for Korea to be hub of Northeast Asian's logistics. Along with the advent of super large container vessel, world ports environment changed from "milkway" type, which means vessel calls every port for service to "Hub & Spoke" type, which means vessel calls regional central port and feeder service for the rest ports. As environment changes, regional ports in Northeast Asia are competing each other tougher and tougher and introducing or developing port logistics information system based on state-of-the-art technology in order to adapt themselves to new environment, thus to be Hub port. Taking this situation into consideration, we want to define clearly the meaning and scope of port logistics IT and review the global trend of port logistics IT. Finally we want to find future development of port logistics IT which we have to achieve.

  • A vessel in distress might be well identified when both the variables affecting the drifting of the vessel and the extent to which the variables affect the drifted vessel are known. And also the disembarking place inside the ship might be easily located if the drifting poised is forecasted. The forecasting method of the drifting poise is resolved by combining the vectors of the current and the wind. It is, however, very hard to forecast the effect of the wind, which should be mainly determined by field survey. This study aims at identifying the drifting characteristics of medium/large ships, considering only the effect of the wind. The experiment revealed the following results. $\circled1$ The drifting poise is determined by the aspect ratio of the ship and the shape of the superstructure of the ship. $\circled2$ Drifting direction is quite stable when wind speed goes over a certain level. $\circled3$ Drifting speed is 3-7% of the wind speed in case of T/S Hannara.

  • The Korean icebreaking research vessel "Araon" performed four sea trials in the Arctic and Antarctic Seas. The ice properties, such as the ice thickness, floe size, ice strength, and power of the vessel were quite different in these trials. To compare the speeds of ship with the same ice strength and power, the AARC (Arker Arctic Research Center) method is used with a vessel power of 10 MW and an ice strength of 630 Pa in this paper. Based on the analysis results, the speed of the ship was 1.62 knots (0.83 m/s) with a 1.02-m ice thickness and 2.5-km floe size, 5.3 knots (2.73 m/s) with a 1.2-m ice thickness and 1.0-km floe size, and 13.8 knots (7.10 m/s) with a 1.1-m ice thickness and 200-m floe size. The analysis results showed that the ship speed and floe size have an inversely proportional relationship. Two reasonable reasons are given in this paper for the final result. One is an ice breaking phenomenon, and the other is the effect of the ice floe mass. For the breaking phenomenon, the ice breaking force is very small because the ice floe is not breaking but tearing when a ship is passing through a small ice floe. Regarding the effect of the ice floe mass, it is impossible for a ship to push and tear an ice floe if the mass of the ice floe is too large compared to the mass of the ship. The velocity of the ship decreases when the ice floe has a large mass and a large size because the ship has to break the ice floe to move forward.

  • In this study, hull form of main vessel of Korean large purse seiner fishing industry is developed for the improvement of resistance performance as well as for the satisfaction to the Standard of Fishing Convention, ILO. Through the modification of reference hull form parameters and local characteristics, the hull form development is carried out. The optimum hull form parameters are searched by Sequential Quadratic Programing(SQP) method with the power estimation method of Holtrop & Mannen. To minimize the wave resistance, bulbous bow parameters are determined by the bulbous bow design method of Alvarino. The plasmatic curve is redesigned from that of the reference hull by using Lackenby method. The resistance performances of the reference and designed hull forms are estimated by using numerical simulation method. Also, the judgment of seakeeping ability and the estimation of intact stability for the designed hull form is carried out. As a result, the optimum hull form is proposed. To verify the improvement of resistance performance, model tests are carried out in towing tank. The results show that the resistance of the designed hull form is about 14% smaller than that of the reference hull from at design speed. A new hull form proposed in this study can contribute to the development of the main vessel hull form of Korean large purse seiner fishing system.

  • The accurate results of finite element analysis are directly related to reliability FE model which is exactly describing dynamic characteristics of target structure. So, a model updating is necessary to establish reliable FE(Finite Element) model with a lot of experience and effort using modal testing. A large structure is too difficult to obtain the dynamic characteristics owing to its weight and size. In this work, using main gun firing test, modal testing was performed to obtain dynamic characteristics of large naval vessel, which is difficult to tap the general modal testing method. The result of experiment was considered its possibility and future plans.

  • Objective: Mechanical thrombectomy (MT) is an effective treatment for patients suffering from acute ischemic stroke secondary to large vessel occlusion. However, recanalization failure rates of interventions were about 20% in literature studies. We report our experience of unsuccessful MT with a focus on technical reasons. Methods: From December 2010 to June 2021, six hundred eight patients with acute ischemic stroke due to large artery occlusion received MT using a stent retriever with or without an aspiration catheter in our institution. We divided the reasons for failure into six categories. We analyzed the reasons for failure by dividing our experience time into 3 periods. Results: A total of 608 cases of thrombectomy for large vessel occlusion were identified in the study period. The successful recanalization rate was 90.4%. In most of the cases (20/57, 35%), the thrombus persisted despite several passes, and the second most common cause was termination of the procedure even after partial recanalization (10/57, 18%). Similar proportions of in-stent occlusion, distal embolization, and termination due to vessel rupture were observed. On analysis of three periods, the successful recanalization rate improved over time. Conclusions: MT fails due to various reasons, and intracranial artery stenosis is the main cause of MT failure. With the development of rescue techniques, the failure rate has gradually decreased. Further development of new devices and techniques could improve the recanalization rates.

  • Scoping analyses for the Safety Injection System (SIS) configuration for Korean Next Generation Reactor (KNGR) are peformed in this study. The KNGR SIS consists of four mechanically separated hydraulic trains. Each hydraulic train consisting of a High Pressure Safety Injection (HPSI) pump and a Safety Injection Tank (SIT) is connected to the Direct Vessel Injection (DVI) nozzle located above the elevation of cold leg and thus injects water into the upper portion of reactor vessel annulus. Also, the KNGR is going to adopt the advanced design feature of passive fluidic device which will be installed in the discharge line of SIT to allow more effective use of borated water during the transient of large break LOCA. To determine the feasible configuration and capacity of SIT and HPSI pump with the elimination of the Low Pressure Safety Injection (LPSI) pump for KNGR, licensing design basis evaluations are performed for the limiting large break LOCA. The study shows that the DVI injection with the fluidic device SIT enhances the SIS performance by allowing more effective use of borated water for an extended period of time during the large break LOCA.

  • Steel catenary riser (SCR) is a popular/economical solution for the oil/gas production in deep and ultra-deep water. The behavioral characteristics of SCR have a high correlation with the motion of floating production facility at its survival and operational environments. When large motions of surface floaters occur, such as FPSO in 100-yr storm case, they can cause unacceptable negative tension on SCR near TDZ (touch down zone) and the corresponding elastic deflection can be large due to local dynamic buckling. The generation, propagation, and decay of the elastic wave are also affected by SCR and seabed soil interaction effects. The temporary local dynamic buckling vanishes with the recovery of tension on SCR with the upheaval motion of surface floater. Unlike larger-scale, an-order-of-magnitude longer period global buckling driven by heat and pressure variations in subsea pipelines, the sub-critical local dynamic buckling of SCR is motion-driven and short cycled, which, however, can lead to permanent structural damage when the resulting stress is greatly amplified beyond the elastic limit. The phenomenon is extensively investigated in this paper by using the vessel-mooring-riser coupled dynamic analysis program. It is found that the moment of large downward heave motion at the farthest-horizontal-offset position is the most dangerous for the local dynamic buckling.
