  • The prey-predator system with a single cross-diffusion pressure is known to possess a local solution with the maximal existence time $T\;{\leq}\;{\infty}$. By obtaining the bounds of $W\array_2^1$-norms of the local solution independent of T we establish the global existence of the solution. And the long-time behaviors of the global solution are analyzed when the diffusion rates $d_1\;and\;d_2$ are sufficiently large.

  • Natural frequencies of the transverse vibration of beams with step change in cross-section are obtained by using the asymptotic closed form solution. This closed form solution is found by using WKB method under the assumption of slowly varying properties, such as mass, cross-section, tension etc., along the beam length. However, this solution is found to be still very accurate even in the case of large variation in cross-section and tension. Therefore, this result can be easily applied to many engineering problems.

  • In recent years, multifunctional ternary nitride thin films have received extenstive attention due to its versatility in many applications. In particular, noble metal based ternary nitride thin films showed a promising properties in the application of Multifunctional heating resistor films because its good electrical properties and excellent resistance against oxidation and corrosion. In this study, we prepared multifunctional noble metal based ternary nitride thin films by atomic layer deposition (ALD) and plasma-enhanced ALD (PEALD) method. ALD and PEALD techniques were used due to their inherent merits such as a precise composition control and large area uniformity, which is very attractive for preparing multicomponent thin films on large area substrate. Here, we will demonstrate the design concept of multifunctional noble metal based ternary thin films. And, the relationship between microstructural evolution and electrical resistivity in noble metal based ternary thin films will be systemically presented. The useful properties of noble metal based ternary thin films including anti-corrosion and anti-oxidation will be discussed in terms of hybrid functionality.

  • The "optimal" solution for a decision making problem should be the one that best reflects the decision-maker's preference. For MADM (Multi-Attribute Decision-Making) problems, however, finding an optimal solution is difficult, especially when the number of alternatives, or that of attributes is relatively large. Most of the existing mathematical approaches arrive at a final solution on the basis of many unrealistic assumptions, without reflecting the decision-maker's preference structure exactly. To remedy this, some interactive methods have been proposed, but most of them require a large amount of information growing exponentially as the number of alternatives, or that of attributes increases. Therefore it is difficult for the decision-maker to maintain consistency throughout the decision making process. In this paper, an interactive method which finds optimal solutions for deterministic MADM problems with many attributes and alternatives is proposed. Instead of considering all the attributes simultaneously, this method partitions all the attributes into several mutually independent subgroups and considers one of them at each of preordered steps, where the alternatives are eliminated until the optimal one is obtained. The efficiency of the method lies in the fact that the amount of neccessary information is reduced significantly, and even further if a suboptimal solution is acceptable to the decision-maker.ion-maker.

  • This study proposes a new procedure to find an initial solution to reduce the number of iterations of goal programming. The process of computing an initial solution is divided into two steps in this study. Decision variables which satisfy feasibility using Gaussian eliminations construct an initial solution reducing the iterations in the first step. It uses LHS as a tool that decision variables construct an initial solution. The initial solution which is constructed by the first step computes the updated coefficient of the objective function in the second step. If the solution does not satisfy the optimality, the optimal solution using the Modified Simplex Method is sought. The developed method doesn't reduce the overall computing time of goal programming problems, because time is more required for the process of constructing an initial solution. But The result of this study shows that the proposed procedure can reduce the large number of iterations in the first step effectively.

  • In this paper, the optimal bang-bang control problem of an air-conditioning system with slab thermal storage was formulated by gradient method. Furthermore, the numeric solution obtained by gradient method algorithm was compared with the analytic solution obtained on the basis of maximum principle. The control variable is changed uncontinuously at the start time of thermal storage operation in an analytic solution. On the other hand, it is showed as a continuous solution in a numeric solution. The numeric solution reproduces the analytic solution when a tolerance for convergence is applied severely. It is conceivable that gradient method is effective in the analysis of the optimal bang-bang control of the large-scale system like an air-conditioning system with slab thermal storage.

  • For the development of a large-scale dialysis process for silk fibroin solution, a batch and continuous dialysis chamber was designed and built, which are to be used as a unit module for the process. A series of dialysis experiments were carried out to estimate the kinetic parameters for dialysis using the solutions of salt-solubilized silk fibroin. The solution was dialyzed by distilled water either batch-wise or continuously. Dialysis kinetics was monitored by measuring refractometery at high salt concentration and conductivity at lower salt concentration. The apparent dialysis coefficients were $5.4g/m^2-hr$ and $1.8g/m^2-hr$, for well mixed batch and continuous dialysis, respectively. The alteration of molecular weight distribution of dialyzed silk fibroin solution was monitored.

  • In this study, a new fictitious play (FP) procedure is presented to solve two-person zero-sum (TPZS) Blotto games. The FP solution procedure solves TPZS games by assuming that the two players take turns selecting optimal responses to the opponent's strategy observed so far. It is known that FP converges to an optimal solution, and it may be the only realistic approach to solve large games. The algorithm uses dynamic programming (DP) to solve FP subproblems. Efficiency is obtained by limiting the growth of the DP state space. Blotto games are frequently used to solve simple missile defense problems. While it may be unlikely that the models presented in this paper can be used directly to solve realistic offense and defense problems, it is hoped that they will provide insight into the basic structure of optimal and near-optimal solutions to these important, large games, and provide a foundation for solution of more realistic, and more complex, problem

  • This paper reports the suitability of a domain decomposition technique for the hybrid simulation of dilute polymer solution flows using Eulerian Brownian dynamics and Radial Basis Function Networks (RBFN) based methods. The Brownian Configuration Fields (BCF) and RBFN method incorporates the features of the BCF scheme (which render both closed form constitutive equations and a particle tracking process unnecessary) and a mesh-less method (which eliminates element-based discretisation of domains). However, when dealing with large scale problems, there appear several difficulties: the high computational time associated with the Stochastic Simulation Technique (SST), and the ill-condition of the system matrix associated with the RBFN. One way to overcome these disadvantages is to use parallel domain decomposition (DD) techniques. This approach makes the BCF-RBFN method more suitable for large scale problems.

  • The most popular minimization method is based on the least-squares criterion, which uses the $L_2$ norm to quantify the misfit between observed and synthetic data. The solution of the least-squares problem is the maximum likelihood point of a probability density containing data with Gaussian uncertainties. The distribution of errors in the geophysical data is, however, seldom Gaussian. Using the $L_2$ norm, large and sparsely distributed errors adversely affect the solution, and the estimated model parameters may even be completely unphysical. On the other hand, the least-absolute-deviation optimization, which is based on the $L_1$ norm, has much more robust statistical properties in the presence of noise. The solution of the $L_1$ problem is the maximum likelihood point of a probability density containing data with longer-tailed errors than the Gaussian distribution. Thus, the $L_1$ norm gives more reliable estimates when a small number of large errors contaminate the data. The effect of outliers is further reduced by M-fitting method with Cauchy error criterion, which can be performed by iteratively reweighted least-squares method.
