Background: Revegetating landfills can be a challenging task as the reclaimed soils are typically dry and have low nutrient content. Therefore, selecting suitable plant species is important for initial revegetation. The issue with current practices (in Korea) is that alien plant species have been typically selected for revegetation projects. In this context, this study selects and tests a set of native plant species for landfill revegetation, accompanied by the assessment of the landfill soils. Results: The soil of the landfill (landfill location) was in a very poor condition with high bulk density and low organic matter and nutrient contents. Among 10 tested species, only Brassica campestris showed high coverage and a sufficient number of individuals in study quadrats sown with seeds. Results suggest that plant species with heavy seeds are the only ones that can adapt to the environment of a typical landfill due to the site's aridity and low nutrient content. The reason is due to such species' superior wind resistance and the capacity to provide sufficient energy for the initial growth of the plants for survival in such landfill environment. Conclusions: This study recommends selecting plant species (1) with arid-adapted features and (2) whose seed weight is sufficiently heavy for survival at landfills or areas with a similar condition for future revegetation.

Until 1993, Nanji landfill has been the main solid waste treatment facility for Seoul, which is the capital of Korea. Since the landfill has not been properly lined, soil and ground water around the landfill has been contaminated. Due to the proximity, it has been speculated that the water quality of the Han River would have been also influenced by the leachate. In order to illuminate this, HELP model to estimate the quantity of the leachate from Nanji landfill and RMA model to simulate the change of water quality in Han River were applied in this research. The result indicates that the quantity of leachate from Nanji landfill has been overestimated by previous works and it was due to the failure to consider the water storage capacity of the landfill. The effect from Nanji landfill leachate on the water quality, in terms of COD input, proves to be smaller than those from other tributaries and influents to the River and the effect is larger when the flow of the River is reversed due to the tide.
The purposes of this study are the analysis of landfill gases(LFGs) in old open dumping landfill site near middle city and offer the useful data for reusing the landfill site as the residental, commercial and other purposes. The concentration of $CO_2$ and $CH_4$ were lower as 8.28 vol% and 1,247 ppm but the concentrations of $NH_3$ and $H_2S$ were 7 times and 12 times higher than TLV-TWA standard. The concentration of $CH_4$ and other gases were lower than the ACGIH criterion. As the result of the environmental assessment on the open dumping landfill, if appears that this landfill is maturation phase and the formation of LFGs is reduced. If the treatment facility of $NH_3$ and $H_2S$ gases is prepared, it can be safely used as this landfill site.
The purposes of this study were to investigate the symptoms, diseases and deaths of residents living near the municipal solid waste landfill site, and to compare the relative risk ratio of their adverse health effects with control group. In self-evaluation, the scores were especially severe lowest in residents of v2 and v3 villages(which were located about 500 m toward under the landfill site) such as 32.2 and 16.7 for village-environment, 24.8 and 16.0 for management of landfill site, and 23.5 and 16.5 for confidence of environmental policy, respectively. On symptoms, relative risk ratios were also highest as 3.53 and 3.55 for breathing difficulty, and 3.36 and 3.00 for respiratory symptom in v2 and v3 villages, respectively. On morbidity, they were slightly high as much as 1.39 and 1.24 in v5 and v2 villages, respectively. On mortality, relative risk ratios were $1.15{\sim}2.46$ in experimental villages. They were especially high as much as 2.46 in v3 village where located near under the landfill site, and also 2.14 in v5 village where located at area affected with the landfill site, but near the sea. The rate of cancer causing death was average 35.2% of total deaths. It was very highest as much as 61.1 % in v2 village, where was closely located near under the landfill site. Cancers causing death in this village were lung cancer(3 cases), larynx cancer(2 cases), stomach cancer(2 cases), pancreatic cancer(1 case), thryoid cancer(1 case), leukemia(1 case) and other(1 case). Our data, although based on limited number of cases and geographical coverage, suggest that residents living near landfill site have the increasing relative risks of various symptoms and mortality causing cancer. No causal mechanisms are available to explain these findings. But the possibility of a causal association between the increased adverse health effects and the municipal solid waste landfill site cannot be fully excluded.

As the landfill ban of food waste has enforced since 2005, the composition of municipal solid waste(MSW) has changed dramatically. In this 2 year study, MSW in a small city has collected 3 times at 10 different generating points, and physico-chemical analysis has done. From the result, the effect of landfill ban of food waste on the physico-chemical properties of MSW was described. Landfill ban of food waste has reduced by 12 weight % in the composition of food waste in MSW, and has reduced by 25 % of bulk density. After landfill ban of food waste, water content of MSW has reduced to 32.3%, which is reduced by 14.1 % of water content of year 2004 data. Low heating value of MSW after landfill ban was 2991.4kcal/kg, which has increased 32% than that of year 2004 data. From landfill gas generation modeling, it is estimated that the yearly generation rate of landfill gas will be reduced by 5% than in case of accepting food waste into the landfill.
In this study, the Tier 2 method recommended by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was used to predict the methane generation rate at two landfill sites, designated as Y and C for purposes of this study, in South Korea. Factors such as the average annual waste disposal, methane emissions ($L_0$) and methane gas generation rate constant (k) were estimated by analyses of waste and the historical data for the landfills. The value of k was estimated by field experiments and then the changes in the methane generation rate were predicted through the year 2050, based on the value of k. The Y landfill site, which was in operation until the year 2008, will generate a total of 17, 198.7 tons by the end of 2018, according to our estimations. At the C landfill site, which will not be closed until the end of 2011, the amount of methane gas generated in 2011 will be 3,316 tons and the total amount of gas generated by 2029 will be 61,200 tons. The total production rate of methane gas at the C landfill is higher than that of the Y landfill. This indicates that the capacity of a landfill site affects the production rate of methane gas. However, the interrelation between the generation rate of methane and the value of k is weak. In addition, the generation of methane gas does not cease even when the operations at a landfill site come to a close and the methane gas production rate is at its highest at end of the operating life of a landfill site.
To assess preliminarily the contamination potential of water resources including groundwater owing to the hydrogeological characteristics of landfill site and the potential impact to humans and animals through contamination of water resources by leachate, "Landfill Site Preliminary Assessment Model(LASPAS)" was contrived. LASPAS could help them proritization of remediation of landfil sites by the convenient and relatively simple evaluation method of landfill site features. LASPAS was designd to aliot numerical ratings to landfill site related factors undermentioned; 1) hydrogeological factors such as hydraulic conductivity of aquifer, thickness of confining layer over aquifer, topographical slope, net recharge, and subsurface containment 2) water resources contamination factors of impacts on receptors such as proximity to drinking water supply, substitutability of drinking water supply, type of use of water resources, known impact on drinking water supply, and flood potential.
Most of the solid waste has been land-filed as an ultimate disposal method in Korea, with might induce many environmental problems by generating odor, particulates and leachate. The landfill site should be considered as a kind of pleasant facility to neighboring residents. Currently, for a landfill site, while the environmental law requires to perform the EIA before the planning. EIA has been performed after the selection of the landfill-site. That might be controversal to the purpose of doing EIA. In this study, the weakness of the EIA for the landfill-site was analysed and was suggested for comprehensive EIA in Korea as well.

With the shortage of the land and NIMBY syndrome, it is issued recently that the capacity of waste-landfill site is needed though the decreasing tendency of waste landfill. From this point, the stability is the most essential problem in the landfill that will be constructed. Advanced design and construction are most important for that. In this paper, for the study of desiccation, dry-shrinkage crack from drying and chemical reaction in cement hydration, which is occurred when the surface layer stabilization method is applied in wast landfill, laboratory test of the ground and specimen according to the mixture ratio of stabilizer is performed. From the result, it is notified that the uni-axial strength increases with the stabilizer, but dry-shrinkage increases too, therefore, it is important and the goal of this study to find the optimal mixture ratio of each stabilizer. Analysis of variance for regression with acting variables is performed to find optimal mixture ratio of each stabilizer.

In recent years there has been a steady increase in geoenvironmental engineering projects where geotechnical engineering has been combined with environmental concerns. Many of these projects involve some investigation on contaminant and leachate flume in the ground and landfill. In this study, investigation on leachate around the waste landfill was carried out to detect the leaked and contaminated area. Many techniques such as geophysical, drilling and sampling method were applied. As a result of this study, the concentration of leachate and the point of leachate leaking around landfill were found out, and countermeasures for cut-off of leachate flow from landfill were investigated.
