In order to investigate effective solar energy conversion system, the light-induced electron transfer reactions have been examined across single-lamellar liposomes incorporated organic photosensitizers such as anthracene and naphthalene derivatives. We have observed photosensitized reduction of methyl viologen (1,1'-dimethyl-4,4'-$bipyridinium^{2+}$) dissolved in the exterior aqueous phase of the pigmented phospholipid liposomes when EDTA, as electron donor, is dissolved in the enclosed aqueous phase of the liposomes. The anthroyl stearic acid incorporated in the hydrophobic bilayer of liposomes leads to much less quantum yield for the photosensitized reduction of $MV^{2+}$ than the anthracene carboxylate incorporated in the outer hydrophilic layer. However, ${\beta}$-carotene with anthroyl stearic acid incorporated into the bilayer enhances the quantum yield significantly (${\Phi}{\simeq}0.2-0.3$), preventing the reverse reaction of electron transfer ($MV^+_\ {\rightarrow}MV^{2+}$) so that it might be useful for solar energy conversion into chemical energy. A naphthalene derivative, octadecyl naphthylamine sulfonic acid incorporated into the outer layer of liposomes results in less efficiency of $MV^{2+}$ reduction than anthroyl stearic acid. These results have been also tested with respect to lipid components of liposomes.
Al-Zn based alloys are the most common types of wrought Al alloys. Although Al-Zn alloys have high strength, they cannot be applied to a conventional casting process. In this study, Al-Zn-based alloys applicable to a die casting process were developed successfully. The developed Al-45 wt% Zn-based alloys showed a fine equiaxed grain structure and high strength. A fine equiaxed grain having an average size of $25{\mu}m$ was obtained by the die casting process. The UTS and elongation of the new alloy are 475 MPa and ~3.5%, respectively. In addition, we elucidate the effect of a Zn addition on variations in different mechanical properties and the microstructure characteristics of (Al96.3-xZnxCu3Si0.4Fe0.3) x=20, 30, 40, and 45 wt% alloys fabricated by a die casting process.
Layered-double hydroxide (LDH)-based nanostructures offer the two-fold advantage of being active catalysts with incredibly large specific surface areas. As such, they have been studied extensively over the last decade and applied in roles as diverse as light source, catalyst, energy storage mechanism, absorber, and anion exchanger. They exhibit a unique lamellar structure consisting of a wide variety of combinations of metal cations and various anions, which determine their physical and chemical performances, and make them a popular research topic. Many reviewed papers deal with these unique properties, synthetic methods, and applications. Most of them, however, are focused on the form-factor of nanopowder, as well as on the control of morphologies via one-step synthetic methods. LDH nanostructures need to be easy to control and fabricate on rigid substrates such as metals, semiconductors, oxides, and insulators, to facilitate more viable applications of these nanostructures to various solid-state devices. In this review, we explore ways to grow and control the various LDH nanostructures on rigid substrates.

This work investigates the relationships between the static mechanical properties of Ti-6Al-4V manufactured through selective laser melting (SLM) and post-process heat treatments, namely stress relieve, annealing and hot isostatic pressing (HIP). In particular, Ti-6Al-4V parts were fabricated in three different build orientations of X, Z, and $45^{\circ}$ to investigate the multi-directional mechanical properties. The results showed that fully densified Ti-6Al-4V parts with densities of up to 99.5% were obtained with optimized SLM parameters. The microstructure of stress relieved and mill annealed samples was dominated by fine ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ martensitic needles. After HIP treatment, the martensite structure was fully transformed into ${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}$ phases (${\alpha}+{\beta}$ lamellar). Within the realm of tensile properties, the yield and ultimate strength values were found statistically similar with respect to the built orientation for a given heat treatment. However, the ductility was found orientation dependent for the HIP samples, where a lower value was observed for samples built in the X direction.
The effects of the dissolved cementite on the mechanical properties have been experimentally investigated. The steel wires were fabricated depending on the carbon content of 0.82 and 1.02 wt.% and drawing strain from 4.12 to 4.32. The bending fatigue resistance and torsion ductility were measured by a hunter fatigue tester and torsion tester specially designed for thin-sized wires. The results showed that as the drawing strain and carbon content increased, the fatigue resistance and the torsional ductility of the steel wires decreased, while the tensile strength increased. In order to elucidate this behavior, the microstructure in terms of lamellar spacing (${\lambda}_p$), cementite thickness ($t_c$) and morphology of cementite was observed by advanced analysis techniques such as transmission electron microscope (TEM) and 3 dimensional atom probes (3-D AP).
To improve the low ductility and high strain-rate sensitivity in Sn-Bi based solder alloys, the influences of the minor additions of alloying elements (Ag, Mn, In) were investigated. The strain-stress curves of various Sn-40Bi(-X) alloys, including a pre-suggested Sn-40Bi-0.1Cu composition were measured using a tensile testing machine. As a result, the elongation and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) values were compared. The small addition (0.5 wt.%) of Ag significantly enhanced the ductility and high strain-rate sensitivity of the alloys at strain rates of $10^{-4}$ to $10^{-2}\;s^{-1}$ mainly due to the increase and refinement of eutectic lamellar structures. The microstructure change increased the area of grain boundaries, thus ameliorating the grain boundary sliding mode. It was also found that Mn is an effective element in enhancing the ductility, especially at the strain rates of $10^{-3}$ to $10^{-2}\;s^{-1}$ The enhancement is likely attributed to the fine and homogeneous microstructure in the alloys containing Mn.
The crystalline domain of thermosetting urea-formaldehyde (UF) resins at low formaldehyde-to-urea (F/U) molar ratios (≤ 1.0) is known to be responsible for their poor performance as wood adhesives. Crystallization has been observed in 1.0 F/U UF resins during the addition reaction stage and at the end of the synthesis process (neat UF resins). The crystallinity and X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra of the uncured neat UF resins, on the other hand, differed significantly from those of the cured neat UF resins, raising the possibility that their crystal structures were also different. This study demonstrates for the first time that the crystalline domains in 1.0 F/U UF resins generated from uncured and cured samples are identical. Despite having a lower crystallinity value, the synchrotron XRD patterns of purified neat UF resins were equivalent to the XRD patterns of cured neat UF resins. Transmission electron microscope images of the cured UF resins showed that the crystals were lamellar structures. This finding suggests that the crystal at low molar ratio UF resins are isotropic polycrystals with random orientation.
We examined the morphology of the fertilized egg and the fine structure of fertilized egg envelopes of Poropanchax normani belonging to the family Poeciliidae, also known as Norman's lampeye using light and electron microscopes. The fertilized eggs with narrow perivitelline space were found to be spherical and demersal, additionally containing small oil droplets in the vitelline membrane. Further, a bundle of adhesive filaments was observed to be present on one side of the fertilized egg. These filaments possessed remarkably high elasticity and were approximately 1-3mm in length. The size of the fertilized egg was determined to be about 1.49 ± 0.07mm (n=30). The outer surface appeared smooth, and adhesive filaments originating at different location of the surface of the envelope were found to be distributed around the egg envelope and were joined together to form a single long bundle in scanning electron microscopic observation. A peak-like structure formed of several straight wrinkles was observed around the micropyle. However, the complete structure of the micropyle could not be studied due to the depth at which it was located. Additionally, the total thickness of the egg envelope was ascertained to be approximately12.5-14.5㎛. The egg envelope consisted of two distinct layers, an outer electron dense layer and an inner lamellar layer, further consisting of 10 sublayers of varying thicknesses. Collectively, it was observed that the morphological characteristics of the fertilized egg, fine structures surrounding the micropyle, outer surface, adhesive structure consisting adhesive filaments, and sections of fertilized egg envelope displayed species specificity.
The olfactory anatomy and histology of Lethenteron reissneri were researched using a stereo microscope, a light microscope, and a scanning electron microscope. As in other lampreys, it shows same characters as follows: i) a single olfactory organ, ii) a single tubular nostril, iii) a single olfactory chamber with gourd-like form, iv) a nasal valve, v) a nasopharyngeal pouch, vi) a sensory epithelium (SE) of continuous distribution, vii) a supporting cells with numerous long cilia, viii) an accessory olfactory organ. However, the description of a pseudostratified columnar layer in the SE and Non SE is a first record, not reported in sea lamprey Petromyzon marinus. In particular, both 19 to 20 lamellae in number and olfactory receptor neuron's quarter ciliary length of the knob diameter differ from those of P. marinus. From these results, it might be considered that the olfactory organ of L. reissneri shows well adaptive structure of a primitive fish to slow flowing water with gravel, pebbles, and sand and a hiding habit into sand bottom at daytime. The lamellar number and neuron's ciliary length may be a meaningful taxonomic character for the class Petromyzonida.
In this study, the gravitating mechanical stir casting method was used to fabricating the Nb2O5/AZ31 magnesium matrix nanocomposites. Niobium pentoxide (Nb2O5) used as reinforcement with two different weight percentages (3 wt % and 6 wt %). The influence of Nb2O5 on microstructure and mechanical properties has been investigated. The microstructure analysis showed that the composites are mainly composed of the primary α-magnesium phase and phase β-Mg17Al12 secondary phase. The secondary phase was dispersed evenly along the grain boundary of the Mg phase. The Nb2O5/AZ31 nanocomposites revealed that the grain size and its lamellar shape (β-Mg17Al12) were gradually refined. Different strengthening mechanisms were assessed in terms of their contributions. Results showed that composite material properties of hardness, yield strength, and fracture study were directly related to Nb2O5 as a reinforcement. The maximum values of the mechanical properties were achieved with the addition of 3 wt% Nb2O5 on the AZ31 alloy.
