  • The aim of our study is to develop new algorism for sea fog detection by using Geostational Meteorological Satellite-5(GMS-5) and suggest the techniques of its continuous detection. So as to detect daytime sea fog/stratus(00UTC, May 10, 1999), visible accumulated histogram method and surface albedo method are used. The characteristic value during daytime showed A(min) > 20% and DA < 10% when visble accumulated histogram method was applied. And the sea fog region which detected is of similarity in composite image and surface albedo method. In case of nighttime sea fog(18UTC, May 10, 1999), infrared accumulated histogram method and maximum brightness temperature method are used, respectively. Maximum brightness temperature method(T_max method) detected sea fog better than IR accumulated histogram method. In case of T_max method, when infrared value is larger than T_max, fog is detected, where T_max is an unique value, maximum infrared value in each pixel during one month. Then T_max is beneath 700hpa temperature of GDAPS(Global Data Assimilation and Prediction System). Sea fog region which detected by T_max method was similar to the result of National Oceanic and Atmosheric Administration/Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (NOAA/AVHRR) DCD(Dual Channel Difference). But inland visibility and relative humidity didn't always agreed well.

  • The aim of this study was to compare the results of morphological phenotypic examination and molecular biological method, randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) using clinical isolates from Korean patients infected with dermatophytes. A total of 44 clinical isolates have been collected by Korean Collection Medical Fungi (KCMF) and those were subjected for the RAPD analysis. The results showed that the fungal strains that have RG1 band patterns were identified as Trichophyton rubrum by the neighbour-joining analysis. Additionally, other fungal strains that have RG3 band patterns were identified as Epidermophyton floccosum and RG5 band patterns were identified as Micorsporum gypseum. Even though molecular biological method such as RAPD are not necessary, it might be useful when some strains have similar morphological characteristics or when same species has phenotypic variations. In this study, therefore, we targeted internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions of fungal rDNA, performed RAPD and then compared with morphological phenotypic examination.

  • The capitalization of know-how, knowledge management, and the control of the constantly growing information mass has become the new strategic challenge for organizations that aim to capture the entire wealth of knowledge (tacit and explicit). Thus, knowledge mapping is a means of (cognitive) navigation to access the resources of the strategic heritage knowledge of an organization. In this paper, we present a new mapping approach based on the Boolean modeling of critical domain knowledge and on the use of different data sources via the data mining technique in order to improve the process of acquiring knowledge explicitly. To evaluate our approach, we have initiated a process of mapping that is guided by machine learning that is artificially operated in the following two stages: data mining and automatic mapping. Data mining is be initially run from an induction of Boolean case studies (explicit). The mapping rules are then used to automatically improve the Boolean model of the mapping of critical knowledge.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the mechanical responses of a high-speed railway shield tunnel subjected to impact by a derailed train, with emphasis on the protective effect of the secondary lining. To do so, the extended finite element method was used to develop two numerical models of a shield tunnel including joints and joint bolts, one with a cast-in-situ concrete secondary lining and one without such a lining. The dynamic responses of these models upon impact were analyzed, with particular focus on the distribution and propagation of cracks in the lining structures and the mechanical responses of the joint bolts. The numerical results showed that placing a secondary lining significantly constricted the development of cracking in the segmental lining upon the impact load caused by a derailed train, reduced the internal forces on the joint bolts, and enhanced the safety of the segmental lining structure. The outcomes of this study can provide a numerical reference for optimizing the design of shield tunnels under accidental impact loading conditions.

  • The aim of this paper is to develop design-oriented models for the prediction of the ultimate strength and ultimate axial strain for concrete confined with glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) wraps. Twenty of most used and recent design-oriented models developed to predict the strength and strain of GFRP-confined concrete in circular sections are selected and evaluated basing on a database of 163 test results of concrete cylinders confined with GFRP wraps subjected to uniaxial compression. The evaluation of these models is performed using three statistical indices namely the coefficient of the determination (R2), the root mean square error (RMSE), and the average absolute error (AAE). Based on this study, new strength and strain models for GFRP-wrapped concrete are developed using regression analysis. The obtained results show that the proposed models exhibit better performance and provide accurate predictions over the existing models.

  • To offer a general guideline for the quantitative analysis of airborne pollutants, we designed and conducted a comprehensive QA/QC test using two different strategic approaches, namely (1) field-based comparative measurement and (2) laboratory-based comparative analysis. The former task was performed to make meaningful comparison of combined errors occurring from both sampling and analytical techniques in the measurements of such components as: (1) criteria pollutants, (2) volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and (3) particulate matters with the associated metals and ions. The latter task was also conducted to compare various types of bias arising mainly from the laboratory analytical procedures of (1) gaseous standards of VOCs and (2) of aqueous standards of metals and ions. The concentration data derived from each of these two different types of major tasks were evaluated per chemical species categorized as above. While the very details of these studies are to be reported on an individual basis according to the above classification of the project, this paper is presented to provide an overview of the whole project - its aim and direction.

  • The aim of this study was to obtain the basic data on the fish school behavior change to approaching vessel and fish species identification by means of their swimming speed. The surveys were carried out for the juvenile southern blue fin tuna and other fish schools off Esperance, western Australia from January to March 1999. We observed changes of fish school behavior in response to the approaching vessel using 360-degree scanning sonar. The results showed that, a horizontal direction index used to quantify a change of fish school behavior did not identify dependence of a radial distance and a swimming speed. A MannWhitney test conducted using the horizontal swimming speed of both species identified by sonar specialists, did not reveal a significant difference.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of short and long duration sintering on microstructure and flexural strength of zirconia. Methods: To conduct three-point bending test, Zirconia specimens are milled according to ISO 6872 guidelines(N=18, n=9 per group). Two specimens group(n=8) is sintered for 10 hours(Standard schedule) and 3 hours(Speed schedule) at the peak temperature of 1550℃ with silicon carbide sintering furnace. Flexural strength of specimens are measured by instron. After coating each specimen(n=1), microstructure of specimens is observed using Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM). T-test was utilized to statistically assess the data. Results: The mean and standard deviation value of the flexural strength for standard schedule group are 578.15±57.48Mpa, that of speed schedule are 465.9±62.34Mpa. T-test showed significant differences in flexural strength between two zirconia specimen group which applied standard schedule and speed schedule respectively(p<0.05). Conclusion: The result of this study showed that the increase in sintering time led to increased grain size, and also to a positive effect on the flexural strength.

  • The corpus luteum is a transient endocrine gland essential for regulation of the ovarian cycle as well as for establishing and maintaining pregnancy. Prostaglandin $F_{2{\alpha}}$ (PGF) initiates functional and structural regression of the corpus luteum and therefore is an important regulator of the estrous cycle. It is a matter of debate whether the endothelial cells of the bovine corpus luteum express PGFR, the cognate receptor for PGF. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the expression of PGFR in bovine endothelial cells. Endothelial cells were isolated from the bovine corpus luteum of the mid-luteal stage using magnetic beads and cultured in vitro. We demonstrate that this isolation procedure generates a pure culture of endothelial cells as confirmed by synthesis of Factor VIII and lack of expression of $3{\beta}$-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase. By RT-PCR, Western blot and immunofluorescence analyses, we further show that the cultured endothelial cells produced PGFR. This model system can be utilized to provide an experimental system to investigate the role of PGF on endothelial cells during the reproductive cycle.

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the photodynamic effect of various photosensitizing agents against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). MRSA was exposed to light from a 632 urn diode laser (15 J/$cm^2$) in the presence of various photosensitizer, such as photofrin, photogem, radachlorine and ALA. In vivo study was performed using ICR mice. Twenty eight mice had a standard wound ($100\;mm^2$) created on the dorsum, and MRSA was inoculated into the wound region. The four groups were classified as follows: (1) the untreated control group (bacteria alone), (2) the bacteria plus light group (15 J/$cm^2$), (3) the bacteria plus photofrin group (kept in the dark), and (4) the photodynamic therapy (PDT) group (bacteria, photofrin, and light). After photofrin (dose 1 mg/kg) injection, the experimental group was irradiated with 632 urn diode laser (15 J/$cm^2$) for 30 minutes after In vitro results of PDT showed the complete killing of MRSA at the photofrin, radachlorine, and photogem However, ALA-PDT was ineffective on MRSA viability. In vivo results showed that photofrin has therapeutic effect on the wound infection. These results demonstrate that selective lethal photosensitization of MRSA can be achieved using phofrin, photogem and radachlorin. Thus, PDT can inactivate MRSA survival.
