  • This study evaluated advanced water treatment (AWT) system in Korea. There are currently 16 plants operating with AWT. However, no attempt has been made to evaluate AWT system. This study selected one water treatment plant with AWT (pre-ozonation + BAC). Using the operation data from 1995 to 2001 and pilot study results, the post-evaluation of the AWT system has been conducted. The study found that AWT improved water qualities of organic, ammonia, and turbidity, as expected. However, the extent of the improvement was generally short of the pilot study expectations. Pre-ozonation failed to decrease coagulant consumption. The dosage increased rather than decreased. AWT was, however, successful to decrease chlorine consumption. The chlorine reduction was related to the change in raw water characteristics and AWT introduction. Pre-ozonation failed to decrease coagulant consumption. The dosage increased rather than decreased. AWT was, however, successful to decrease chlorine consumption. The chlorine reduction was related to the change in raw water characteristics and AWT introduction, Both operation of pre-ozonation and reduced ammonia loading were responsible for the reduction. AWT increased the operation cost. Maintenance, raw water, and power cost increased, while labor and chemical cost decreased. Manpower reduction resulting form automation caused the decrease of labor cost. The reduction of chlorine consumption caused the decrease of chemical cost.

  • A 25-year-old epileptic female patient scheduled for vaginal delivery, was referred to the pain clinic for the relief of labor pain. She had been taking anticonvulsant drugs, but suffered from seizure attacks three or four times a month. We had induced continuous lumbar epidural analgesia successfully and she subsequently gave birth to a healthy infant. So we report that continuous lumbar epidural analgesia should be considered as a safe method for reduction of labor pain and prevention of seizure attacks in epileptic pregnant women.

  • During a typical construction project, a contractor nay often find that the time originally available or normally expected to perform its work has been severely reduced. To finish the project by the completion date, the contractor is forced to find a way to speed up the progress of its work to compensate for the reduction in available time. The most frequent initial reaction of contractors to this situation is to increase on-site manpower by working longer time (overtime), adding more workers (overmanning), or implementing shift work (shift work) to increase the rate of progress. The goals of this study were to investigate how these three methods affect labor productivity and to quantify their impact on labor productivity by analyzing real project data collected from sheet metal contractors and mechanical contractors in the US.

  • Studying of labor-saving feasibilities in transplanting work of paddy seedling, firstly the five transplanting densities were comparatively examined. The labor-savings were reached as 10, 20, 28% of the whole paddy works, and 28, 39, 61% of the transplanting works by reducing the density as 15, 11 and 8 hills per sq. meter, respectively. However the study on the crop yield and labor-productivity variations as affected by transplanting density of paddy rice was interpreted as the marginal feasibility of density reduction for labor-saving would be more or less than 11-12 hills per sq. meter.

  • This study investigates the impact of the use of the main local languages in Burkina Faso (Moore, Dioula, Fulfulde) on labor force participation. Using Ethnologue language data, I compute the relative language distance reduction index, after which I use a probit/logit model and instrumental variable approach to account for language use policy endogeneity. This study finds that the use of the Moore language increases the likelihood of labor force participation by 36 percent, with a strong impact on women at 59 percent, nine times higher than men, and 38.3 percent for rural individuals, five times higher than individuals living in urban areas. The Dioula language exhibits comparable trends, while Fulfulde has a negative impact on individuals. The study recommends the use of local language(s) as official language(s) to improve labor force participation. However, a bilingual approach combining local and international language(s) will be of use to account for globalization and international competitiveness. The findings here may be of use to researchers and policymakers as part of their effort to increase the labor force participation rates of women and rural individuals. Moreover, this research has significant implications with regard to the implementation of language use policies in a variety of postcolonial language contexts.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate determinants of firms' workforce reduction ratio in Korea, utilizing a dataset surveyed by Korea Labor Institute in 1999. We hypothesize that firms' employment structure has an effect on their workforce reduction ratio. Our findings indicate that the ratio of the layoffs and/or the buyouts is higher, as the average tenure of employees is longer. The findings also indicate that the unionization as a proxy variable for the intensity of the seniority-based pay moderates positively the effect of employees' tenure on the workforce reduction ratio, implying that the more seniority-based the pay system is, the higher positive effect the average tenure of employees has on the workforce reduction ratio.

  • This study examines the effects of active labor market policy on unemployment by pooled cross-section time series analysis utilizing panel data of 18 OECD countries, and seeks implications for improvements of the Korean active labor market policy. The results of the analysis are summarized as follows. First, active labor market policy negatively affects unemployment rates. Second, vacational training program among three major active labor market programs has a negative effect on unemployment rates. Third, employment service program and employment subsidy program have partially negative effects on unemployment rates. The implications for the Korean active labor market policy are as follows. First, it is necessary to expand and systematize active labor market policies. Second, vocational training programs should be systematized and professionalized according to labor demand. Third, employment subsidy programs need to be planned and carried out under the condition of minimizing a substitution effect, a displacement effect and a deadweight loss effect. Fourth, employment service programs need to be developed and carried out under the consideration of not only the reduction of unemployment rates but also the prevention of re-unemployment, mitigation of income inequality and improvement of productivity.

  • This study examined the impact of changes in agricultural production methods on society, the economy, and the environment. While traditional open-field farming relied heavily on natural conditions, modern approaches, including greenhouse and smart farming, have emerged to mitigate the effects of climate and seasonal variations. Facility horticulture has been on the rise since the 1990s, and recently, there has been a growing interest in smart farms due to reasons such as climate change adaptation and food security. We compared open-field spinach and greenhouse spinach using agricultural income survey data, and we also compared greenhouse tomato cultivation with smart farming tomato cultivation, utilizing data from the smart farm survey reports. The economic results showed that greenhouse spinach increased yield by 25.8% but experienced a 29% decrease in income due to equipment depreciation. In the case of tomato production in smart farms, both yield and income increased by 36-39% and 34-46%, respectively. In terms of environmental impact, we also compared fertilizer and energy usage. It was found that greenhouse spinach used 29% less fertilizer but 14% more energy compared to open-field spinach. Smart farming for tomatoes saw a negligible decrease in electricity and fuel costs. Regarding the social impact, greenhouse spinach reduced labor hours by 31%, and the introduction of smart farming for tomatoes led to an average 11% reduction in labor hours. This reduction is expected to have a positive effect on sustainable farming. In conclusion, the transition from open-field to greenhouse cultivation and from greenhouse cultivation to smart farming appears to yield positive effects on the economy, environment, and society. Particularly, the reduction in labor hours is beneficial and could potentially contribute to an increase in rural populations.
