  • Reinforced concrete structures are widely used in civil engineering projects around the world in different designs. Due to the great evolution in computational equipment and numerical methods, structural analysis has become more and more reliable, and in turn more closely approximates reality. Thus among the many numerical methods used to carry out these types of analyses, the finite element method has been highlighted as an optimized tool option, combined with the non-linear and linear analysis techniques of structures. In this paper, the behavior of reinforced concrete beams was analyzed in two different configurations: i) with welding and ii) conventionally lashed stirrups using annealed wire. The structures were subjected to normal and tangential forces up to the limit of their bending resistance capacities to observe the cracking process and growth of the concrete structure. This study was undertaken to evaluate the effectiveness of welded wire fabric as shear reinforcement in concrete prismatic beams under static loading conditions. Experimental analysis was carried out in order compare the maximum load of both configurations, the experimental load-time profile applied in the first configuration was used to reproduce the same loading conditions in the numerical simulations. Thus, comparisons between the numerical and experimental results of the welded frame beam show that the proposed model can estimate the concrete strength and failure behavior accurately.

  • This paper drives the exact expression of bit error rate(BER) performance for groupwise iterative-multipath interference cancellation(GWI-MPIC) algorithm for cancelling multipath interference components in a coherent high-speed downlink packet access(HSDPA) system of W-CDMA downlink and the BER performance is evaluated by numerical analysis. The performance of GWI-MPIC is compared to the successive interference cancellation(SIC) algorithm for multipath components. From numerical results, the optimal average BER performance of weighting factor ${\beta}$$\_$h/ for interference cancellation is obtained at ‘${\beta}$$\_$h/=0.8’ and then this weighting factor is hereafter applied to other performance analysis. Numerical results showed that the average BER performance of GWI-MPIC algorithm is rapidly degraded at multipath L=6, but is revealed the good performance than that of SIC algorithm in terms of increasing the number of multipath. This results also indicated that the average BER performance is greatly degraded due to increasing interference power more than multicode K=8. The average BER performance of the proposed algorithm is superior to the performance of SIC algorithm about 3 ㏈ for processing gain PG=128 at multipath L=2 and Average BER=1.0${\times}$10$\^$-5/. And also, the results produced good performance in case of linear monotonic reduction of multipath fading channel gain than that of constant channel gain variation, because multipath fading channel gain which is arrived later is small.

  • A measurement of tunnel displacement plays an important role for stability analysis and prediction of possible fault zone ahead of tunnel face. In this study, we evaluated characteristics of tunnel behaviour due to the existence and orientation of fault zone based on 3-dimensional finite element numerical analysis. The crown settlement representing tunnel behaviour is acquired at 5 m away from tunnel face in combination with x-Rs control chart analysis based on statistics for trend line and L/C (longitudinal/crown displacement) ratio in order to propose risk management method for fault zone. As a result, x-Rs control chart analysis can enable to predict fault zone in terms of existence and orientation in tunnelling.

  • A new type of precast CFST column to RC beam braced frame is proposed in this paper. A series of shake table tests were conducted to excite a one-third scale six-story model for investigating the global seismic performance of this type of structure against earthquake actions. Particular emphasis was given to its dynamic property, global seismic responses and failure path. Correspondingly, a numerical model built on the basis of fiber-beam-element model, multi-layer shell model and element-deactivation method was developed to simulate the seismic performance of the prototype structure. Numerical results were compared with the measured values from shake table tests to verify the validity and reliability of the numerical model. The results demonstrated that the proposed novel precast CFST column to RC beam braced frame performs excellently under strong earthquake excitations; the "strong CFST column-weak RC beam" and "strong connection-weak member" anti-seismic design principles can be easily achieved; the maximum deflections of precast CFSTC-RCB braced frame satisfied the deflection limitations proposed in national code; the numerical model can properly simulate the dynamic property and responses of the precast CFSTC-RCB braced frame that are highly concerned in engineering practice.

  • This paper presents the robust stability analysis and design methodology of the fuzzy feedback linearization control systems. Uncertainty and disturbances with known bounds are assumed to be included in the Takagi-Sugeno (TS) fuzzy models representing the nonlinear plants. $L_2$ robust stability of the closed system is analyzed by casting the systems into the diagonal norm bounded linear differential inclusions (DNLDI) formulation. Based on the linear matrix inequality (LMI) optimization programming, a numerical method for finding the maximum stable ranges of the fuzzy feedback linearization control gains is also proposed. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme, the robust stability analysis and control design examples are given.

  • Soil nailing technique is being widely used for stabilization of vertical cuts because of its economic, environment friendly and speedy construction. Global stability and lateral displacement are the two important stability criteria for the soil nail walls. The primary objective of the present study is to evaluate soil nail wall stability criteria under the influence of in-situ soil variability. Finite element based numerical experiments are performed in accordance with the methodology of $2^3$ factorial design of experiments. Based on the analysis of the observations from numerical experiments, two regression models are developed, and used for reliability analyses of global stability and lateral displacement of the soil nail wall. A 10 m high prototype soil nail wall is considered for better understanding and to highlight the practical implications of the present study. Based on the study, lateral displacements beyond 0.10% of vertical wall height and variability of in-situ soil parameters are found to be critical from the stability criteria considerations of the soil nail wall.

  • Numerical stability analysis of one-dimensional axial flow in solid rocket motors is performed based on the Euler equation coupled with an unsteady combustion equation of solid propellant. In order to check the numerical scheme, behavior of a standing wave in a closed tube is examined. A standing wave in solid rocket motor decays or grows depending on the total effect of propellant combustion, nozzle flow, and so on. The stability boundary of the fundamental mode standing wave is determined by changing one of the combustion parameters. In addition growth rates of the wave are calculated numerically in relatively low Mach number flow region for the motors with different port and nozzle throat diameters. The results obtained here agree well with the approximate solution. The same scheme is applied to a motor with shorter length and L*-instability is observed.

  • In this study, to achieve the optimal conditions for mechanical hyper-fine pattern fabrication process, deformation behavior of the materials during indentation scratch test was studied with numerical method by ABAQUS S/W. Brittle materials (Si, Pyrex glass 7740) were used as specimens, and forming conditions to reduce the elastic recovery and pile-up were proposed. The indenter was modeled as a rigid surface. Minimum mesh sizes of specimens are 1-l0nm. Variables of the nanoindentation scratch test analysis are scratching speed, scratching load, tip radius and tip geometry. The nano-indentation scratch tests were performed by using the Berkovich pyramidal diamond indenter. Comparison between the experimental data and numerical result demonstrated that the FEM approach can be a good model of the nanoindentation scratch test. The result of the investigation will be applied to the fabrication of the hyper-fine pattern.

  • As a part of numerical and experimental research works for the prediction and improvement of ship's maneuvering performance, a study on the performance analysis of two different rudders has been carried out. While the planform shape and the aspect ratio of the rudders have been fixed, section shape has been changed. Conventional type of HMRI NP section and special type of dolphin-tail section have been employed. Performances of the rudders have been investigated by using CFD and compared with experimental data obtained in a wind tunnel. A commercial CFD program has been used to solve the RANS equations. Two-equation k-ro model has been applied to close the governing equations. Block-structured grids are used in the numerical calculation. Based upon the calculation results, the rudder with dolphin-tail section has shown a possibility of significantly improving rudder performance if utilized as the section of ship rudders.
