Comparison of stand structure and growth characteristics between Korean white pine plantation and oak-dominated natural deciduous forest by thinning treatment

  • Background: Korean white pine (Pinus koraiensis) is a major commercial species, and the importance of the oak trees (Quercus spp.) is increasing due to various factors such as environmental and ecological values. However, more information is required to clearly understand the growth characteristics of these species especially regarding thinning intensity. This study was performed to provide the basic information to develop the silvicultural guideline and field manual by analyzing tree and stand characteristics in line with thinning intensity in the Korean white pine plantation and oak-dominated natural deciduous forest. Results: Diameter at breast height (DBH) and volume changes by the thinning intensity in the Korean white pine plantation were significantly different from those in the oak-dominated deciduous natural forest. In particular, DBH distribution in the pine stand appeared that there were more large diameter trees as the thinning intensity was higher. DBH periodic annual increment (PAI) of the pine stand was higher as the thinning intensity was stronger and the growth period was shorter. This trend was similarly shown in the natural deciduous forest, but the amount of PAI was smaller than in pine stand. The volume PAI after thinning was not decreased over time. In each stand type, the PAI tended to be lower as stand density was higher. The volume PAI in the pine stand was significantly higher than that in the oak-dominated natural deciduous forest. Dead trees occurred the most in the unthinned plots of each stand type, and those were higher in the natural deciduous forest. Ingrowth trees were observed only in the natural deciduous forest, and its distribution was the lowest in unthinned plots; Korean white pine as ingrowth occurred the most frequently among many tree species. Conclusions: Different effects of thinning treatment on DBH and volume PAI, mortality, and ingrowth were observed for each stand. With respect to forest growth, Korean white pine plantation was superior to the oak-dominated natural deciduous forest. The results of this study offer fundamental information for the development of silvicultural guidelines for Korean white pine plantations and oak-dominated natural deciduous forests in Korea.

국산 침엽수 철물접합부의 인장하중 특성 (Tensile Properties of Metal Plate Connector in Domestic Softwood Lumber)

  • 국산 주요 침엽수재인 소나무, 잣나무, 낙엽송의 철물접합부 인장하중 특성 구명을 위하여 본 연구를 수행하였다. 철물 접합부의 최대 인장하중은 AA형의 경우 소나무가 3,612 kgf로 낙엽송, 잣나무에 비해 각각 1.2배, 1.7배, EA형의 경우 2,704 kgf로 1.1배, 1.5배 우수하였다. 또한 AA형은 EA형에 비해 3 수종 모두 약 1.2배 이상 높은 인장하중을 나타내었다. 철물접합부의 파괴모드는 주로 이의 빠짐, 철물의 인장파괴와 목재의 전단파괴로 이루어지며, 특히 소나무 접합부는 철물의 인장파괴를 나타내었다. 철물접합부재의 인장하중-변위 특성은 Foschi 모형으로 정확하게 추정할 수 있었으며, 철물접합부의 초기강성은 소나무 접합부재가 높게 나타났다. 국산 침엽수재의 철물접합부에 대한 설계하중은 소나무, 낙엽송, 잣나무의 순으로 높게 나타났으며, AA형의 경우 이당 설계하중이 소나무 25 kgf, 낙엽송 22 kgf, 잣나무 15 kgf이었으며, EA형의 경우 소나무 19 kgf, 낙엽송 17 kgf, 잣나무 13 kgf 이었다.

Estimation and Validation of Taper Equations for Three Major Coniferous Species in Gangwon and North Gyeongsang Provinces of South Korea

  • This study was carried out to estimate the parameters of stem taper functions, to figure out the best taper model by species, and to compare with previous studies by species, targeting on the stemmed tree samples collected from the Korean red pine (Pinus densiflora), Korean white pine (Pinus koraiensis), and Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi ) stands in Gangwon and North Gyeongsang provinces of South Korea. The seven widely used models were applied in this study, and Muhairwe 1999 model for Korean red pine and Korean white pine and Kozak 2002 model for Japanese larch were evaluated as the best model for each species according to the fit statistics and the predicted stem form comparison. In addition, the predicted diameter was suitably fitted when comparing the previous studies, and the values were more appropriate following stem taper according to neiloid, paraboloid, and cone parts by species. Consequently, the estimation of this study was considered to represent the stem taper well. When comparing stem taper of three species, the diameter was largest in Korean white pine. Overall, the taper models of this study are judged to be useful for estimating stem form and volume computation of Korean red pine, Korean white pine, and Japanese larch.

북방수염하늘소(Monochamus saltuarius)의 수종별 우화시기 (Emergence Timing of the Pine Sawyer Beetle, Monochamus saltuarius (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) by Tree Species)

  • 충북 청원에서 2006년도부터 2008년까지 북방수염하늘소 성충의 수종(잣나무, 소나무, 낙엽송)에 따른 우화시기와 일중 우화 탈출시간을 조사하였다. 성충은 잣나무와 소나무에서 5월 초순(2${\sim}$10일)에 우화를 시작하였으며, 6월 중순(4${\sim}$20일)에 끝났다. 하지만 낙엽송에서는 5월 중순(13일)에 우화를 시작하여 5월 하순(27일)에 끝나 두 수종에 비하여 우화기간이 짧았다. 우화시기는 수컷과 암컷 간에 차이가 없었다. 2007년에 우화한 성충의 성비는 잣나무에서 0.55, 소나무 0.46, 낙엽송 0.59로 수종간 차이는 없었다. 일중 우화탈출은 24시간 내내 이루어졌고 최대 우화탈출은 12${\sim}$14:00시로 가장 높았고(22.8%), 06${\sim}$08:00시간이 가장 낮았다. 성충은 1년에 1세대 발생 비율이 98.9%이고, 2년 1세대 발생 성충의 비율은 1.1%이었다.

지역별 잣나무 차대검정림의 초기생장에 미치는 미기후의 영향 (Effects of Local Climatic Conditions on the Early Growth in Progeny Test Stands of Korean White Pine)

  • 본 연구는 경기도 가평, 광주, 그리고 충청북도 영동에 식재된 잣나무 차대검정림을 대상으로 미기후가 잣나무 초기생장에 미치는 영향을 구명하기 위하여 수행하였다. 이를 위해 먼저 지역별ㆍ임령별로 평균 흉고직경, 평균 수고, ha당 흉고단면적, ha당 재적 등의 임분통계량을 측정ㆍ요약하였으며, 이에 근거하여 10년 생부터 20년 생까지 10년 간의 초기생장에 대한 임분변수별 연년생장량을 파악하였다. 환경요인으로서 각 차대검정림의 지역별 미기후 조건이 생장에 미치는 영향을 분석하기 위해 지형기후학적 방법과 공간통계 기법을 사용하였다. 이상과 같이 얻어진 연도별 기후 추정치에 근거하여 임목생장에 영향을 미치는 30개의 기후지수를 각 차대검정림별로 추정하였다. 최종적으로 이들 30개의 기후지수와 각 임분변수별 연년생장량 간의 상관분석 및 회귀분석을 통하여 국지기후가 잣나무 생장에 미치는 영향을 파악하였다. 지역별 잣나무의 초기생장은 경기도 가평과 광주의 순서로 우수하였으며, 충청북도 영동은 매우 저조한 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 지역별 생장특성은 각 연구 대상지의 미기후와 밀접한 관련을 가지고 있는데, 기온이 낮고 높은 습도를 유지하는 지역이 잣나무 생장에 적합한 것으로 분석되었다. 특히 상관분석과 임분 변수별 생장을 추정하기 위해 도출된 최적 회귀식에 채택된 기후지수를 보면 잣나무의 초기 생장에 결정적인 영향을 미치는 미기후 조건은 낮은 기온인 것으로 판명되었다.

강원도 춘천지역 비시업 잣나무림의 현존량과 양분분포 (Biomass and Nutrient Distribution in Unthinned Korean White Pine Plantation in Chuncheon, Gangwon Province)

  • This study was performed to provide basal data for effective nutrient control and productivity improvement of the Korean white pine stand. The objectives of this study were to investigate biomass and nutrient distribution in the unthinned Korean white pine plantation which is located in chuncheon, Gangwon province. Aboveground of the stand was estimated by the method of allometric relationship between tree component(kg) and diameter at breast height(DBH, cm). Total above ground biomass of the stand was 127.9t/ha. The relative ratio of stem, living branch, needle compared with total aboveground biomass were 57.9, 16.1, 12.7 and 13.3%, respectively. All nutrients were highly accumulated in needle and N had the largest proportion in the total amount of nutrient accumulation and followed by Ca, K, Mg, P. The amount of nutrient restoration in the Korean white pine was 6,852kg/ha for N, 1,916kg/ha for Ca, 889kg/ha for K, 518kg/ha for Mg, and 124kg/ha for P.

  • 본(本) 연구(硏究)는 이용재적산출(利用材積算出)과 품등구분(品等區分)의 지침(指針)이 되는 완만도표(完滿度表)를 조제(調製)하기 위(爲)하여 잣나무 벌채목(伐採木) 280본(本)을 공시목(供試木)으로 하여 간곡선(幹曲線)을 작성(作成)하였다. 이 간곡선자료(幹曲線資料)를 형율급별(形率級別)로 분류(分類)하여 Behre의 간곡선식(幹曲線式)에 의(依)하여 간곡선방정식(幹曲線方程式)을 유도(誘導)하였다. 각간곡선방정식(各幹曲線方程式)에 의(依)하여 형율급별(形率級別)로 완만도율(完滿度率)을 산출(算出)하여 완만도표(完滿度表)를 작성(作成)하였다.

Heritability and Genetic Gains for Height Growth in 20-year-Old Korean White Pine in Korea

  • The objectives of this study were to examine the genetic variation of 20-year-old tree height and to estimate heritabilities and genetic gains of Korean white pine. Analysis of variance showed that families and family x block interaction had the significant (p=0.01) effects on tree height. However, family variation appears to be much greater than the variation due to family x block interaction. Individual tree heritability was higher ($h_I^2=0.73$) than family heritability, ($h_F^2=0.83$) therefore, combined selection showed the largest genetic gain (17.76%) in a given equal intensity of selection.

Thinning Intensity for Large Diameter Trees in Korean White Pine Plantation of South Korea

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of thinning intensity on the growth of large diameter trees in Korean white pine (Pinus koraiensis S. et Z.) plantation. Eight thinning plots were analyzed by categorizing into heavy thinning, light thinning, no thinning (control) according to thinning intensity. As a result, average DBH increased more in heavy thinning plots than in light thinning or unthinned plots. The number of large trees (DBH>25 cm) were obviously shown the most in heavy thinning plots. It is considered that heavy thinning is needed for the production of the large diameter trees.

Dimensional Stability and Bending Properties of Small Diameter Log Treated by Sap-displacement Method

  • The effect of the treatment with CCFZ, FR-4, and PEG400 from butt end on the dimensional stability and bending properties was examined. Three softwood species such as red pine, Korean white pine and Japanese larch and three hardwood species such as poplar, alder and oak were investigated in this research. Shrinkage of red pine, Korean white pine, poplar, and alder treated with PEG400 decreased. However, there was no significant decrease of shrinkage in Japanese larch and oak. The decrease of shrinkage when moisture content changed from about 20% to 10% was larger than that at any other phase. In regard to the effect of treatment on bending properties, bending MOE and MOR of all specimens treated with PEG400 decreased significantly. Especially in the case of red pine, poplar, and alder treated with PEG400, bending MOR reduced 9%, 14%, and 12%, respectively. Reductions of MOR of the hardwood was also much larger than that of the softwood. However, in all species, treatment with CCFZ and FR-4 did not affect the change of bending MOE and MOR significantly. Comparing the large specimen which also included heartwood with the small specimen which included only treated sapwood, there was a difference in the change of bending MOE and MOR between them. The large specimens of Korean white pine, alder and Poplar, which had a relatively low proportion of sapwood(18~22%), showed the decrease of MOR by 11~13% more than that of small specimens, while red pine, Japanese larch and oak, which had a relatively high proportion of sapwood(35~40%), showed little decrease. It means that bending MOE and MOR of structural wood treated from butt end should be considered in terms of sapwood proportion as well as effect of treated chemicals.
