Occupational therapists (OTs) interface patients much longer than other healthcare workers and, thus, are likely to experience a high level of stress because of work, physical fatigue, lack of professional knowledge and skills, and problematic relationships with patients, etc. This study examined the quality of the lives of OTs and the workplace which is an influential factor. This study recruited 200 OTs and used a professional quality of life scale. We found that, only 27.0% experience high levels of compassion satisfaction (CS) and 80.5% and 74.5% experience high or average levels of burnout (BO) and secondary traumatic stress (STS) of compassion fatigue (CF), respectively. We discovered that CS was higher in temporary employees; and CF was higher in females, subjects in their 30s; and those working at general hospitals. Also, BO was higher in those with one to five years of clinical experience and regular employees. Last, STS was higher in the group without stable income. This study verified that clinical experience is a critical factor that reduces BO, and excessive workload outside of treatment lowers the professional quality of life. This suggests that work environment and regulations related to OTs must be improved to increase CS and reduce CF.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of job stress and support from supervisors on depression of care givers in elderly care facilities. Methods: Subjects were 191 care givers working in elderly care facilities in K-Province in Korea. Data were collected from self-administered questionnaires. Descriptive statistics, ${\chi}^2$ test, t-test, F-test, Pearson's and Spearman's correlation coefficients, and hierarchical multiple logistic regression with dummy variables were used for statistical analysis of data. Results: Job stress measured with Korean Occupational Stress Scale was $56.16{\pm}5.88$. Emotional and instrumental support from supervisors were $37.05{\pm}7.30$ and $32.39{\pm}7.34$, respectively. After controlling for general characteristics, job stress was significantly related to depression (OR: 1.07, 95% CI: 1.01~1.14). However, job stress became non-significant in the model that included instrumental support from supervisors. Not emotional but instrumental support from supervisors was significantly related to depression of care givers (OR: 0.93, 95% CI: 0.88~0.99). Conclusion: Results of this study suggest that job stress has negative effects and instrumental support from supervisors has protective effects on depression of care givers in elderly care facilities. Therefore, measures to increase instrumental support by supervisors should be developed to improve psychological health of care givers in elderly care facilities.
In the perspective of industrial health management, it is important for the employee to decrease their job stress, to improve their productivity and quality of labor. In this study, the job stress, and it's influence on PWI(Psychosocial Wellbeing Index) were investigated by the questionnaire survey of 138 industrial workers who had studied assistive technology in college. The contents of questionnaire consist of the demographic characteristics, job-related characteristics, job stress and psycho-social stress. We evaluated job stress by KOSS-SF(Korean Occupational Stress Scale-Sort Form) and psychosocial stress by PWI-SF(Psychosocial Well-being Index-Short Form). To analyze the results, we evaluated the exposure level of KOSS and PWI by demographic characteristics and job-related characteristics using significance tests. Also, we estimated the relationship among demographic characteristics, job-related characteristics, job stress and psychosocial stress, using correlation analysis. As a results, all workers were found to be in a group under the high risky stress. It showed that the scale index of female's job non-autonomy and pwi were much larger than those of male's. Therefore, to guarantee job autonomy of female workers should be more emphasized, to improve their working environment. Job type had significant relationships with many job stress category; physical environment, job demand, job instability and organization culture. Regarding pwi, the scale index of the workers who is in charge of the civil service such as contacting the disabled and the aged in person, were much larger than that of the other workers. Accordingly, the job stress management program including physical environment, job demand, job instability and organization culture, should be suggested, to decrease the stress of the workers in charge of the disabled and the elders service. The strongest predictors of pwi was organization system through maximum positive relations between organization system and pwi. Therefore, it indicates that improvement of organization system such as a fair merit rating, a manpower supply, demand plan and department cooperation is urgently needed to reduce pwi.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the job stress, health promotion behaviors and quality of life between public health officials and general administration officials. Methods: Subjects were 60 public health officials and 71 general administration officials in G-City in Korea. Data were collected from January 25 to February 5, 2016 through self-administered questionnaires and analyzed t-test and Pearson's correlation coefficients. Results: Job stress (t=4.060 p<.001) and quality of life (t=3.963, p=.025) were significantly different between public health officials and general administration ones, while health promotion behaviors were not significantly different between these two official groups (t=0.394, p=.606) Conclusion: Results of this study suggested that it was necessary for public health officials to develop intervention program aimed at reducing job stress. Also, it would be effective to focus on improving health promotion behaviors and quality of life for them.

Objective: The aim of this study is to review the job stress measurement for applying in nuclear power plants(NPPs). Background: The standard and guideline to evaluate and manage the job stress is insufficient in NPPs. Although job stress might have a negative effect on task performance particularly it can be related with human error in NPPs. Method/Results: This paper considered the objective and subjective stress measurements. One of the questionnaire(Korean Occupational Stress Scale) and the experiment method was investigated to apply in NPPs. KOSS was analyzed about the inter item consistency and correlation with the workload, and relative importance. In the objective evaluation considered the experiment method for the physical and mental job stress and analyzed from the phased point of view. Conclusion/Application: The measurement and criteria to evaluate job stress for operators must be complemented on the job characters and environments in NPPs. This study may support to confirm and manage the job stress in NPPs. The study of more specific methodology on job stress in NPPs is required on the basis of this paper.
Background: Healthcare workers perform an emotionally exhausting daily work activity, making them prone to occupational hazards, namely psychosocial ones. This study aims to assess the impact of psychosocial risk factors on healthcare workers' mental health. Methods: A cross-sectional study was developed between May and June of 2021 with 479 healthcare workers from Portuguese hospitals. The Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale was used to assess mental health, and psychosocial risks were assessed through the Health and Work Survey - INSAT. Statistical analysis was performed to identify the psychosocial risk factors related to anxiety, depression, and stress. Subsequently, a multiple linear regression was performed to identify the models that better explained psychosocial risk factors' relationship with anxiety, depression, and stress. Results: Data showed a strong exposure to psychosocial risks. Work pace and intensity, work relationships, and emotional demands stood out with higher global average percentages for yes answers to "exposure and discomfort." The analysis of the b values and p-values from the multiple linear regression shows that some cross-sectional psychosocial risks are predictors of anxiety and stress dimensions, and other psychosocial risks differ in the two mental health dimensions. However, it is important to highlight that healthcare workers still showed great joy and pleasure in performing their work activities. Conclusion: Support network development in the work environment is needed to prevent healthcare workers' emotional stress and promote their psychological well-being. Therefore, new research is essential to understand the psychosocial risks that affect healthcare workers and assess the less visible effects of work-health relationships.

The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effect of social support on the relationship between parenting stress and depression among parents of children with a disability. One hundred and fifty parents of children with a disability from Gwangju area were asked to complete a survey including The Parental Stress Scale, The Social Support Scale, and The Depression Scale. The data was analyzed by descriptive statistics, pearson correlation, and multiple regression analysis using SPSS 24.0. The results of the study are as follows: First, the correlation analysis showed statistically significant correlations among parental stress, social support and depression. Second, the simple regression analysis showed the direct effect of parental stress on depression. Third, the multiple regression analysis showed the mediating effect of social support on the relationship between parental stress and depression. This suggests the social support may reduce the negative effect of the parental stress on the depression. Implications, limitations, and suggestions for future study are discussed.
Objectives: We aim to investigate association between health behavior, interpersonal/organizational environment and job stress among government officials. Methods: Through health examination and a survey, this cross sectional study investigated 543 government officials working at Central Government Complex in Seoul, Korea. Health behaviors included alcohol drinking, smoking, moderate exercise and food frequency. Interpersonal environment was measured by health behavior practices of significant others and social support for health promotion. And the measures of organizational environment included facilities for exercise, health related norms and health supportive organizational systems. Job stress was assessed by short version of Korean Occupational Stress Scale(KOSS). Results: The level of job stress among female officials was higher than that of male officials. Multivariate logistic model suggested that higher job stress in male officials was significantly associated with lower position(OR=0.267, p<.01) less grain intake(OR=0.642, p<.05), lower level of social support(OR=0.810, p<.01) and abdominal obesity(OR=2.407, p<.05). On the contrary, female officials' stress level was negatively associated with healthy organizational environment(OR=0.725, p<.05). Conclusions: It is suggested that addressing job stress require tailoring intervention by gender characteristics and integration of interpersonal and organizational level approaches.

Background: Burnout syndrome (BOS) is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. This study aims to create the Korean version burnout syndrome scale (KBOSS) that conforms to WHO's definition of BOS and present the cut-off points for screening. Methods: We developed the KBOSS based on WHO's definition of BOS. An online survey was conducted through a specialized online research company. We recruited 444 workers for this research. The validity of the KBOSS was assessed using factor analysis and Pearson's correlation. The KBOSS reliability was assessed using Cronbach's alpha coefficient. The cut-off points for each of the three dimensions were derived using the upper quartile score. Results: The validity and reliability of the KBOSS were good. Regarding reliability, the scale's overall Cronbach's alpha was 0.813. Cronbach's alpha of each three-dimension was as follows: exhaustion, 0.916; cynicism, 0.865; and professional inefficacy, 0.819. The cut-off points of BOS three dimensions are exhaustion S 21; cynicism S 18; and inefficacy S 15. Conclusion: The developed questionnaire (KBOSS) can be a useful tool for screening of BOS.
Purpose: To identify factors that affect the job stress of visiting nurses at health centers in Seoul, Korea, who perform home care services. Methods: Data were collected in the period from November 20 to December 10, 2008, from 206 visiting nurses working at 25 health centers in Seoul metropolitan city. Self-report questionnaires of the Organization-Based Self-Esteem (OBSE) and the Korean Occupational Stress Scale (KOSS) were used. Data were analyzed by the SPSS win 15.0. Results: Several findings were obtained from the study. First, the mean of job stress was 52.4 points, which was higher than that of Korean women. Second, it was shown that by the sub-domain of job stress, the mean value belonged to the top 50% in the four sub-domains of physical environment, job demand, interpersonal conflict, and organizational system. Additionally, it belonged to the top 25% in the sub-domain of job insecurity, wherein the job stress was the highest. Third, the self-esteem of the nurses had the most significant effect on their job stress. Conclusion: Stress related to job insecurity was the highest among the visiting nurses at health centers in Seoul who perform the custom home care service thus, institutional support is urgently needed to alleviate such stress and secure their employment.
