Objectives : The objective of this study was to analyze cognition and status of oral health education of dental hygienists who manage the patients visiting dental clinics and to utilize the findings as continuous study data required for development of systematic oral health education program for management of peridontal disease of adults. Methods : Survey was carried out for 261 dental hygienists working in dental clinics who are performing oral health education of patients with peridontal disease living. Results : 1. In the socio-dynamic diagnosis, it was analyzed that, the younger the age is and the lower the career is, the more the work is centered around assisting medical treatment job and, the older the age is and the higher the career is, the work is centered around oral health education job. 2. In the behavioral diagnosis, it was analyzed that, as to source of knowledge acquisition, guide of dentists and senior dental hygienists was the highest and, as to education media, visual education and demonstration education were mainly used. 3. In educational diagnosis, as to the degree of knowledge about oral health education and the degree of practice, it showed that the degree of knowledge was lower than the degree of practice in peridontal disease process and oral prophylaxis as well as scaling part. 4. In both the cases of independent practice and group practice, it showed that the most frequent obstacle was insufficient educational materials and tools and it was analyzed that acquisition of new knowledge and technology is required as a matter to be improved. Conclusions : It seems to be required for the dental hygienists to develop detailed knowledge and professional technology in order to induce actions and motive of patients during oral health education of peridontal patients and to develop and produce data for efficient education of peridontal patients.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of dental health care among the teachers at local children centers. Methods : The author administered a questionnaire with 105 teachers while undergoing his/her teacher's internship at a Local Center for Children's Welfare in Daegu, from Feb 18th to Feb 20th, 2011. The statistical techniques as frequencies and means, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's Correlation Coefficient and multiple regression with the PASW 18.0 program were used to analyze the data. Results : The knowledge, attitudes, and practice of dental health care was average 19.1 point in knowledge, average 7.8 point in attitudes, average 11.9 point practically high in gender role values. The multiple regression results related each variable to practice of dental health, the practice is significant associated to oral health education, children's dental check-up opportunities, and the higher score attitude of dental health care. Based on the results of this study mentioned so far, the teacher's practices of administering the oral hygiene is deemed to be influenced by the existence of their experiences in the oral hygiene educations, and their attitudes on the subject. Conclusions : t is, therefore, just to provide an education program about dental health care of the children to the teachers on consistent base, in order to assist them to develop an appropriate attitude which would lead to better practices.
Objectives : Since most oral diseases are not life threatening, it can be assumed that an individual's behavior to maintain one's oral health is most likely influenced by one's oral health knowledge. Methods : Mothers whose children are attending five kindergartens and child care facilities in the city of Danjin, Chungnam were selected as subjects of this study. Out of a total of 230 questionnaires collected. A self-administered survey was conducted from April 1 to April 30, 2012. The data were analyzed using SPSS 19.0 (SPSS 19.0 K for window, SPSS Inc, USA) with the level of significance as 0.05. Results : 1. Most of the participants correctly answered questions on the oral health knowledge with a mean of 7.37 out of 9. 2. In the section of caring a child's oral health behavior, 'caring a child to brush his or her teeth three times a day' had the highest score of 3.45 out of 5. 3. Looking at caring a child's oral health behavior and a mother's oral health knowledge by general characteristics of mothers, there were no significant differences based on the mother's age, whether a mother is currently working or not, her level of education, and her monthly average income. Conclusions : Based on the above results, we can draw a conclusion that the lower the difference between the rate of correct answers and that of incorrect answers on mother's oral health knowledge to her child, the higher the mother's score of caring her child's oral health behavior, leading to better caring.

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the awareness towards oral health environmental changes and oral health in smokers and non-smokers in soldiers. Methods : Data were obtained from 350 soldiers serving at Unit M in Gwangju and Gyeonggi-do and ROTC candidates at University Y in Gyeonggi-do from April 28 to May 5, 2013. Collected data were analyzed by SPSS 12.0 program and a significant level was set at 0.05. Results : Non-smokers had more knowledge on tooth staining or gum diseases than smokers(p<0.05). The awareness towards the causes of oral cancer was not much different between the smokers and the non-smokers. The soldiers having dental health education tended to smoke less than those who had no education(p<0.05). The awareness towards individual oral health revealed no difference between the smokers and the non-smokers. Non-smokers had higher subjective knowledge on of the importance of the oral health, smoking influence on the oral health, and secondhand smoking impact on the health(p<0.05). Conclusions : The oral health education by the dental hygienists is very important in the military camps. Non-smokers tended to have higher knowledge on oral health than the non-smokers.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of the oral health education experiences of college students on their oral health knowledge and oral health behavior. Method: The instrument used in this study was questionnaires. The subjects in this study were 335 students who were selected by stratified sampling according to oral health education experiences. Out of them, 123 students received oral health education, and 212 students didn't. Results: There were differences between the two groups in oral health knowledge and oral health behavior according to oral health education. As for the necessity of oral health education, 98.4 percent felt the need for that. Conclusions: Oral health education exerts an influence on oral health knowledge and behavior, and appropriate educational methods and media should be developed to motivate patients to receive oral health education.

The purpose of this study was to survey visiting health care personnel who worked for their public medical health institutions and thereby investigate their oral health knowledge and behavior. Findings of this study are summarized as follow; First, our visiting health care personnel had a significant tendency toward higher score at correct answers to questions about oral health knowledge (mean knowledge about periodontal disease: 67%, mean knowledge about dental caries: 68%, mean knowledge about common dentistry: 68.4% or higher). Secondly, in terms of oral health care behavior, 50% or higher of all our visiting health care personnel visited dental clinic for preventive purposes, and 60.1% visited dental clinic for oral treatment. 46.6% of health care personnel relied on dental clinic for regular scaling services, and 89.6% relied on general hospital or dental clinic for oral treatment. 89.5% of health care personnel brushed their teeth 3 times or more per day; more than half (58%) of them preferred dental floss to other oral hygiene supplies; and 46% practiced roll technique to brush their teeth. Thirdly, health care personnel's oral health knowledge was significantly correlated with their age (F=5.25, p<0.01) and career of health care (F=3.94, p<0.01), while their oral health behavior was significantly associated with their career of visiting health care (F=3.20, p< 0.05).
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the knowledge of dental hygienists on infection control in dental office and their attitude toward that in a bid to provide some information on ways of enhancing the level of infection control in dental office. Methods : The subjects in this study were 220 dental hygienists who worked in dental hospitals and clinics in Busan and South Gyeongsang Province. A survey was conducted from May 17 to June 17, 2010, and the answer sheets from 183 respondents were analyzed with a SPSS WIN 12.0 program. Statistical data on frequency, percentage and mean were obtained, and t-test, Pearson correlation coefficient and one-way ANOVA were utilized. Results : They got a mean of $4.59{\pm}.68$ in six categories of infection control knowledge. They had the best knowledge on dental waste disposal, followed by hand washing, post-sterilization management, instrument disinfection and sterilization, surface management of dental equipment and wearing personal protective equipment. They got a mean of $3.99{\pm}.54$ in attitude, and they scored lowest in practice of surface management of dental equipment. Overall, they scored higher in every aspect of knowledge than in attitude(t=11.410, p=.0.000). There was the greatest gap between their knowledge and practice in surface management of dental equipment (t=13.885, p=0.000), and there was the smallest gap between their knowledge and practice in hand washing(t=5.460, p=0.000). And a positive correlation was found between knowledge and attitude, as better knowledge of infection control led to better attitude toward that(p<.001). Finally, concerning infection control knowledge and attitude by general characteristics, the presence or absence of infection control guidelines made differences to infection control knowledge, and infection control attitude was statistically significantly different according to infection control education experiences(t=6.501, p=.012) and the presence or absence of infection control guidelines(t=22.836, p=.000). Conclusions : In order to bolster infection control in dental office, the related system should be improved to legally require dental personnels to implement infection control. Every dental office must be furnished with infection control guidelines, and sustained education should be provided for dental hygienists to carry out infection control.

The study was performed to evaluate the Parent's knowledge and attitudes concerning the dental health of their children. A questionnaire consisting of 17 questions was given to each of the 664 parents by their children who are attending in primary school and was completed by them. The collected information from the questionnaire was analyzed by the visits to dental clinic, age and education. The results obtained from this study are as follows: 1) The more educated parents were more interested to the dental health of children. 2) In the know ledge concerning the dental health of their children, the parents who were more educated and had visited the dental clinic gave the better. responses. 3) There were no clear differences in age groups in the knowledge and attitudes on their children's dental health. 4) The reason for first visiting the dental clinic was dental treatment 43.2%, toothache 35.4%, for the purpose of oral examination 21.2%, and others were 9.2%. 5) 13.1% of the parents who had visited the dental clinic couldn't or didn't follow the recommended treatment because of economic difficulty 53.3%, lack of time 25%, lack of understanding of child's dental needs 18.3%, and other reasons were 3.3%.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to provide resources to develop oral health education programs to make schoolchildren be able to do oral care behaviors voluntarily by analyzing the factors affecting elementary school students's oral health behaviors. Methods : A self administered questionnaire based survey was conducted with 233 students (117 boys, 116 girls) of sixth graders at Gyeonggi Province from September 1st to October 2nd, 2012. Researchers explained to willing participants the purpose of this study and then, asked respondents to complete their own questionnaire. A total of 233 questionnaires were properly completed while 7 questionnaires had insincere sections and were thus excepted. Results : 1. Children's higher level of oral health-related knowledge have more positive oral health attitudes(p=0.000) and oral health behaviors(p=0.001). 2. The higher oral health behavior mothers have, the more students have oral health knowledge and better oral health attitude, the higher the oral health behavior children have(p<0.01). 3. Students' positive attitude towards oral health(${\beta}$=0.548, p=0.000) and Mother's more attention to Oral check after tooth-brushing(${\beta}$=-0.149, p=0.005) were associated with children's sound dental health behaviors. Conclusions : The findings of this study suggest that the oral health knowledge, attitude and behaviors are associated with students' oral health behavior. Thus, effective support in oral health education, is need to be enhanced among the elementary school students rather than only focus on conveying knowledge to them. Since, mother's oral health-related knowledge and attitudes on the tooth-brushing behaviour and dental health of their children influence on child's oral health, the development of Comprehensive oral health education program into the mother and child needs to be carried out.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate comparison of the effectiveness on knowledge improvement before and after the oral health education focusing on foreign students. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by 40 foreign students in Sun Moon University from June 2 to September 30, 2014. The experimental group had an online oral health education and the control group had an off line education. The questionnaire consisted of oral health(10 items), toothbrushing(10 items), dental caries(10 items), periodontal disease(5 items), tooth sensitivity(5 items), oral cancer(6 items), and smoking(5 items). The data were analyzed by SPSS Win 18.0 program. Results: Knowledge scores of online education increased to average 1.257 points, and that of offline education was average of 2.56 points. There were statistically significant results for toothbrushing, dental caries, periodontal disease, tooth sensitivity, oral cancer and TMD except for smoking in offline education group. Conclusions: This study suggests that the offline oral health education is more effective than online oral health education.
