Cassiopeia A (Cas A) is a young supernova remnant (SNR) where we observe the interaction of SNR blast wave with circumstellar medium. From the early optical studies, dense, slowly-moving, N-rich "quasi-stationary flocculi" (QSF) have been known. These are probably dense CNO-processed circumstellar knots that have been engulfed by the SNR blast wave. We have carried out near-infrared, high-resolution (R=45,000) spectroscopic observations of ~40 QSF, and here we present the result on a QSF knot (hereafter 'Knot 24') near the SNR boundary of Cas A. The average [Fe II] 1.644 um spectrum of Knot 24 has a remarkable shape with a narrow (~8 km/s) line superposed on the broad (~200 km/s) line emitted from shocked gas. The spatial morphology and the line parameters indicate that Knot 24 has been partially destroyed by a shock wave and that the narrow line is emitted from the unshocked material heated/ionized by the shock radiation. This is the first detection of the emission from the pristine circumstellar material of the Cas A supernova progenitor. We also detected H Br gamma and other [Fe II] lines corresponding to the narrow [Fe II] 1.644 um line. For the main clump where we can clearly identify the shock emission associated with the unshocked material, we analyze the observed line ratios using a shock model that includes radiative precursor. The analysis indicates that the majority of Fe in the unshocked material is in the gas phase, not depleted onto dust grains as in the general interstellar medium. We discuss the non-depletion of Fe in QSF and its implications on the immediate progenitor of the Cas A supernova.
Automation of wood processing is strongly required to improve the productivity and quality of wood products in wood industry which is one of the most labor-intensive industries. Classification of surface defects on wood boards such as knots is one of the important steps towards a completely automated wood processing system. In this study the possibility of detection of knots by image processing technique was investigated. Algorithm for the automatic determination of threshold value was developed to enhance the flexibility of image processing system. Two different approaches, grid method and tile method, were developed to enhance the speed in extracting features from images. Grid method showed slightly higher processing speed and tile method proved much more stable in determining threshold values. Tile size of $5{\times}5$ pixels or $6{\times}6$ pixels was found to be proper to get stable results with resonable processing time.
Deadlock detection in distributed systems is considered difficult since no single site knows the exact information on the whole system state. This paper proposes a time-efficient algorithm for distributed deadlock detection and resolution. The initiator of the algorithm propagates a deadlock detection message and builds a reduced wait-for graph from the information carried by the replies. The time required for deadlock detection is reduced to half of that of the other algorithms. Moreover, any deadlock reachable from the initiator is detected whereas most previous algorithms only find out whether the initiator is involved in deadlock. This feature accelerates the detection of deadlock. Resolution of the detected deadlock is also simplified and precisely specified, while the current algorithms either present no resolution scheme or simply abort the initiator of the algorithm upon detecting deadlock.
This study was conducted to investigate the plant-parasitic nematodes of ornamental foliage plants, citrus orchards, and tea plantations from July to December 2022. As a result of the investigation of plant-parasitic nematodes in 415 foliage plants, root-lesion nematodes were detected most frequently, followed by root-knot nematodes, pin nematodes, and other nematodes. In tea plantations, spiral nematodes, cyst nematodes, and root-knot nematodes were detected. Citrus nematodes, ring nematodes, and root-knot nematodes were discovered in citrus orchards. In foliage plants, tea plantations, and citrus orchards, the detection rate of plant-parasitic nematodes was not high, but root-lesion nematodes were detected. Therefore, it is necessary to apply appropriate control methods to manage root-lesion nematodes during the cultivation of foliage, tea, and citrus plants.
For the inspection of wood, machine vision is the most common automated inspection method used at present. It is required to sort wood products by grade and to locate surface defects prior to cut-up. Many different sensing methods have been applied to inspection of wood including optical, ultrasonic, X-ray sensing in the wood industry. Nowadays the scanning system mainly employs CCD line-scan camera to meet the needs of accurate detection of lumber defects and real-time image processing. But this system needs exact feeding system and low deviation of lumber thickness. In this study low cost CCD area sensor was used for the development of image processing system for lumber being fed. When domestic red pine being fed on the conveyer belt, lumber images of irregular term of captured area were acquired because belt conveyor slipped between belt and roller. To overcome incorrect image merging by the unstable feeding speed of belt conveyor, it was applied template matching algorithm which was a measure of the similarity between the pattern of current image and the next one. Feeding the lumber over 13.8 m/min, general area sensor generates unreadable image pattern by the motion blur. The red channel of RGB filter showed a good performance for removing background of the green conveyor belt from merged image. Threshold value reduction method that was a image-based thresholding algorithm performed well for knot detection.
Eelgrass beds are very productive and provide nursery functions for a variety of fish and shellfish species. Management for the conservation of eelgrass beds along the Korean coasts is critical, and requires comprehensive strategies such as vegetation mapping. We suggest a mapping method to spatial distribution and quantify of eelgrass beds using a digital echosounder. Echosounding data were collected from the northeast part of Kwangyang Bay, on the south of Korea, in March, 2007. A transducer was attached to a boat equipped with a DGPS. The boat completed a transect survey scanning whole eelgrass beds of 11.7 km2 with a speed of 1.5-2 m s-1 (3-4 knot). The acoustic reflectivity of eelgrass allowed for detection and explicit measurements of canopy cover and height. The results showed that eelgrass bed was distributed in depth from 1.19 to 3.6 m (below MSL) and total dry weight biomass of 4.1 ton with a vegetation area of 4.05 km2. This technique was found to be an effective way to undertake the patch size and biomass of eelgrass over large areas as nondestructive sampling.

In Korea, much research and development have occurred to enhance the technological competitiveness of tuna purse seining fisheries. Due to these efforts, fishing efficiency has been improved with the development of radar, sonar and global positioning systems for fish detection and revisions to the hull forms of tuna purse seiners. However, for skiff boats, net boats and speed boats, which are auxiliary working boats mounted on tuna purse seiners, technology has lagged behind relative to the modernization of the main vessel. In this study, the hull of an existing propeller-based net boat with steel wire net to protect tuna was changed to the hull of a water jet propulsion vehicle to reduce resistance and improve maneuverability. As a result, a prototype of a water jet propulsion option was produced according to the aluminum structure strength standards specified by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, and safety was confirmed by performing a drop test. Moreover, through a sea trial test, an existing net boat was shown to have a speed of 12.0knots and a towing force of 2,545 kgf at 2,500 RPM. The prototype had a speed of 26.7 knots and a towing force of 2,011 kgf at 3,200 RPM, which satisfied the towing capacity standards of auxiliary working boats mounted on tuna purse seiners.

This study shows that the distribution density of snow crab, Chionoecetes opilio, was estimated using an underwater video monitoring system attached on the towing sledge. The field experiments were carried out at the coastal waters around Chuksan, East Sea, where ranged from 110 to 130m depth during September and October 2007. The sledge was towed for 40 minutes and the towing speed was controlled between 1.5 to 1.7 knot and each research areas were calculated to multiply towed distance by the detection width of the video monitoring system(1.2m), and then, distribution density of snow crab in each observations were estimated as a counted number of crab per 1,000$m^2$. The result shows that their survey, taken between two months, reflected similar results during survey period, and the maximum and mean distribution densities in September estimated to be 77.0(number/1,000$m^2$) and 19.9, respectively, and those of October were 36.0 and 21.8, respectively.

Plant parasitic nematodes were isolated from 274 soil samples collected from soybean fields in Korea. Nematode importance rating in soybean is proposed based on this study and by reviewing other reports. Soybean cyst nematode, Heterodera glycines is the most important nematode species and rated as $1^{st}$ because it detected from 38%(range 25-51%) of soil samples with high density except Jeju province. Root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne spp. is rated $2^{nd}$ and is more widely distributed in southern provinces, Gyeongnam, Jeonnam, and Jeju province (detection rate ranged 16-44%). Pratylenchus is rated $3^{rd}$ and is more frequently detected from northern provinces such as Gyeonggi and Gangwon (detection rate ranged 10-13%). Helicotylenchus is rated $4^{th}$ and is particularly important in Jeju province (detection rate is 62% and numbers averaged 571 nematodes/$300cm^3$ soil), which is the main production area for sprouting soybean in Korea. Tylenchorhynchus, Paratylenchus, Criconema, Criconemoide, Mesocriconema, Ogma, Xiphinema, Paratrichodorus, and Trichodorus occur in low frequency and density, thus they are rated to $5^{th}$. We propose to delete following nematode genus from the list of soybean parasitic nematode in Korea because their parasitism on soybean is unconfirmed or negligible; Tylenchus, Aphelenchus, Aphelenchoides, Ditylenchus, Hirschmanniella immamuri, Basiria graminophila, Psilenchus, and Pseudhalenchus. Therefore, we revised 30 species in 16 genera as soybean parasitic nematodes in Korea. Importance rating is $1^{st}$ Heterodera glycines, $2^{nd}$ Meloidogyne spp., $3^{rd}$ Pratylenchus spp. and $4^{th}$ Helicotylenchus spp. especially in Jeju province.
To investigate the incidence of plant-parasitic nematodes (PPNs) in perilla fields in Korea, 55 soil samples were collected from open fields and plastic-film house fields and were analyzed during January 2020 to October 2020. Root-lesion nematodes (RLNs), spiral nematodes, root-knot nematodes, and stunt nematodes were detected in perilla fields, and the incidences of RLNs (39%) and spiral nematodes (55%) were higher than those of other nematodes. Among PPNs, RLNs are very important species found on economic crops. The detection frequency of RLNs was increased due to continuous crop cultivation, and the frequency of fields that cultivated only one crop continuously for over 11 years was twice higher than the frequency of fields that cultivated only one crop for less than 5 years. The PPN species diversity and density were different between leaf-perilla cultivation fields and seed-perilla cultivation fields. In phylogenetic analysis of RLNs, Pratylenchus penetrans, P. vulnus, and Pratylenchoides leiocauda were identified in perilla fields. These results suggest the RLNs should be considered for establishing nematode management strategies in perilla fields in Korea.
