  • Objectives: This study examines the foodservice status of kindergartens attached to elementary schools in Seoul. We further determine the perception of elementary school principals and kindergarten assistant principals on the foodservice management for kindergartens. Methods: This survey was conducted from July 17 to 23, 2019, enrolling 207 kindergartens attached to elementary schools in Seoul. Questionnaires were sent to principals of elementary schools and assistant principals of kindergartens, and the data obtained from 89 kindergartens were included in the analysis. The questionnaire consisted of four parts: general information on subjects, foodservice management status, foodservice management status during elementary school vacations, and the perception of principals of elementary schools and assistant principals of kindergartens on foodservice management. Data are presented as frequency and percentage or mean and standard deviation. Statistical comparison between principals of elementary schools and assistant principals of kindergartens was conducted by paired t-test, chi-square test, and Pearson's correlation analysis. Results: A separate menu (10.1%) or recipe (20.2%) that considers preschooler characteristics was rarely used for foodservice at kindergartens attached to elementary schools. Most kindergartens did not have a separate dining space (3.4%) or a dedicated cook (93.3%). Although most kindergartens (92.1%) had operational foodservice during elementary school vacations, non-professional staff and non-nutrition teacher were mainly in charge of organizing the menu and purchasing ingredients (34.1% and 41.5%, respectively). The rate of using a contract catering company (28.0%, 23.2%) was also high. Both elementary school principals and assistant principals of kindergartens showed a high perception of the necessity for providing responsibility allowances for nutrition teachers and improving the cooking environment for kindergartens during elementary school vacations. Conclusions: There is a need for policies and administrative support measures to improve the quality of foodservices for kindergartens attached to elementary schools.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the perception of the quality of school meals by parents of kindergarten children in Seoul, analyze the acceptance price and the optimal school meal cost using PSM (price sensitivity measurement) techniques, and provide basic data for improving the quality of kindergarten meals. The survey was conducted using descriptive statistics and PSM analysis of the responses of 1,272 parents of 779 kindergarten children belonging to the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education from April to May 2021 and prior research analysis related to kindergarten meals. 74.1% of the parents surveyed were women, with 61% of children attending kindergartens attached to elementary schools, followed by private kindergartens (28.9%) and public kindergartens (10.1%). According to a study of the quality of meals, private kindergarten parents are highly satisfied with all the quality attributes of meals, such as "sanitation of dining environment" and "nutritionally balanced food" (p<0.001, p<0.01). The analysis of the acceptance price range and the optimal price for school meals showed that there was no significant variation based on the type of kindergarten establishment, with parents' acceptance price range ranging from 3,596 won to 4,454 won with an optimal price of 3,948 won.

  • This study tries to provide basic data that can be useful in suggesting the direction of kindergartens attached to elementary schools, by examining the issues in such kindergartens and the ways to develop them for the future. To do this, I surveyed seven participants, who are currently directors in the kindergartens attached to the elementary schools, by in-depth interviewing. As a result, I found the main issue involves the administrators' lack of expertise about the education of preschoolers. Thus, I suggest that there should be more opportunities to retrain the affiliated principals or directors to better understand the education of preschoolers or the related instructors. Second, I concluded that another critical issue involves the poor administrative and financial system in the current kindergartens attached to the elementary schools. To solve this, I suggest that the government and the local education offices should actively support them with a the solid administrative and financial system. Finally, considering the complaints that the current teachers in those kindergartens are being isolated from the greater society, I suggest that there should be specific solutions to construct the cooperative systems related to scholarships and consulting that help the teachers develop their expertise in educating preschoolers.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of the job stress and ego-resilience of kindergarten teachers life satisfaction, and to explore ways to improve life satisfaction. 198 public and private kindergarten teachers and childcare center teachers in Gangwon-do were asked to respond by using job stress, ego-resilience, and life satisfaction questionnaires. Based on the collected data, Pearson's correlation coefficient analysis and hierarchical multiple regression analysis are as follows. First, the higher the job stress of the kindergarten teacher, the lower the life satisfaction, and the higher the ego-resilience, the higher the life satisfaction. In particular, the reward, a sub-variable of job stress, had a significant negative correlation with the kindergarten teacher's ego-resilience and life satisfaction. Second, the predictors of relationship resilience, energy, and reward significantly influenced the life satisfaction of kindergarten teachers, and the relationship resilience was relatively explanatory about life satisfaction. This study suggests that an educational plan to be explored to improve ego-resilience for kindergarten teacher's life satisfaction.

  • This study is to analyze the contents related to 'state of water', 'state change of water', and 'conditions of state change' in K-12 science textbooks. For this, we analyzed textbooks based on the 5th kindergarten curriculum, the 6th elementary school science curriculum and the 6th middle school science curriculum. Findings show that some of the contents are designed well by topical sequencing or by spiral sequencing. But others have some problems based on topical sequencing and spiral sequencing. Generally, the contents are represented in the order of Perception of phenomena with senses level, Macroscopic understanding level, Understanding of scientific term level, Microscopic understanding level by grade. But the state change contents related to solidification and melting, and conditions of state change contents related to heat, temperature, wind, and humidity are not represented in the level of Microscopic understanding. The contents of state change and conditions related to heat and wind are not represented in the level of scientific term also.
